Crash into T Mobile store

Driver died.

http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/driver-dies-after-crashing-headon-into-tmobile-store

He would have been able to avoid the building if he was on a motorcycle.

The ultimate driving machine? I think not.

RIP Vladislav Bochkov, 29

I was at the light right when the cops were getting there. He hit that building really fast, because that car was pretty banged up. Went over the median and straight into the building. I would have guessed he missed the turn not had an unintended acceleration or stuck pedal.

We were about 1/2 mile east of the accident scene when what seemed to be the entire Fairfax County fire dept blew by us. One of the fire trucks almost clipped a BMW. Overall drivers were pretty good about getting out of the way.

The passenger compartment of the BMW looked fairly normal. The engine bay was crumpled, however.

A 530i is not that fast- I don't see how you could lose control so quickly. Then again, the dude wasn't wearing a seat belt......

Driver killed after crashing into store in Fairfax
http://www.wtop.com/149/3411387/Driver-killed-after-crashing-into-store-in-Fairfax

WASHINGTON - A 29-year-old man was killed Sunday afternoon when his car crashed into a store in Fairfax, Va.

City of Fairfax police say Vladislav Bochkov, of Fairfax, was stopped on Route 50 at a traffic light. When the light turned green, Bochkov's BMW went across three lanes and continued onto Fairfax Boulevard, then went over a median and hit a building that's home to a T-Mobile store.

Bochkov was pronounced dead at Fairfax Hospital. Police say he did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt.

Police say there was no one else in the car, no one else was hurt and there was no structural damage to the building.

The incident is the first fatal crash in the city in 2013. Authorities are continuing to investigate.

I'm guessing the guy had a medical issue or his foot somehow got stuck on the accelerator. It would be odd for someone to lose control of a vehicle from a dead stop and not be able to brake or steer away from a building.

Police Still Trying to Piece Together Fatal Crash, Ask for Public's Help
Police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen anything before, during or after Sunday's deadly crash.
http://fairfaxcity.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/police-still-trying-to-piece-together-fatal-crash-ask-for-publics-help

City of Fairfax Police said Thursday morning they are still trying to piece together details of the fatal crash on Sunday in which a Fairfax man suddenly accelerated through an intersection and crashed into the side of the T-Mobile building in the Kamp Washington intersection.

"City of Fairfax Police are continuing their investigation," the department said in a news release Thursday morning, adding that they encourage anyone to come forward who witnessed the crash.

So far, the investigation indicates that a silver 2004 BMW 530I was traveling east on Route 50 and had stopped for the red traffic signal. As the light cycled to green, the vehicle quickly accelerated across three lanes of traffic and continued briefly onto eastbound Fairfax Boulevard. The vehicle then left the roadway and continued across a median, finally striking the exterior of the building complex at 10955 Fairfax Blvd., which is occupied by T-Mobile.

"The driver of the vehicle - Vladislav Bochkov, 29, of Lochleven Trail in Fairfax - did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, and was transported to Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead," police said. "There were no other occupants in the vehicle and nobody else was injured at the scene."

Following our breaking news story on Sunday, readers wrote into Patch, sharing photos such as the ones above and calling the accident "terrible."

Anyone with additional information - such as photos or observations before or after the crash - about this incident is asked to contact Detective Mike Boone at 703-385-7959 or by e-mail at michael.boone@fairfaxva.gov.

I'm not aware of BMW vehicles having an accelerator issue. Granted, there could be other issues that their cars can have.

I'll have to conclude that this was a suicide. The guy probably blew $2,000 the night before at the paper moon on beer and hookers and could no longer live within himself.

I thought this was a nice sentiment from one of the mourners...

"You are in my heart as we must now say goodbye. There is an old East Prussian saying that “Perhaps they are not stars but rather, openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.” I hope so. You will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know you. Grief is the price we pay for love."

I've followed this carefully. At first, WJLA reported the unfortunate driver "was in cardiac arrest when he was found inside his car." Over two weeks have now passed and there still hasn't been any additional information released. How long does it really take to do an accident report? It would be nice if the police and/or media would say what caused the accident. I'm not the only one who is interested to know.

Sister Jacqueline,

You hath spoken from the heart. Take my hand and let us pray. God of power and mercy, you have made death itself the gateway to eternal life. Look with love on our dying brother, and make him one with Your Son in His suffering and death, that, sealed with the blood of Christ, may he come before you free from sin. Amen.

I hadn't heard about the truck. Seems more like a heart attack. You're right on the insurance company, but they won't post any results either. In other states accident reports and death certificates are public information. But oh no, not in Virginia. Everything is secret -- and death certificates aren't available until 50 years after the death. That makes no sense. The dead aren't going to care. Yes, RIP Vladislav. I'm sure you're family is still in shock and misses you every day. My prayers are for you!

With all the traffic cameras around Fairfax County, you'd think the police would have video tape of what happened, if there was a truck that caused the accident, etc. It's time the investigating officer said something.

Here's the latest from the City of Fairfax (weblink at bottom)

"News Release
Post Date:09/04/2013 11:02 AM

Request for Information-Fatal Traffic Crash
(PLEASE NOTE THE UPDATED INVESTIGATOR BELOW)

City of Fairfax Police are continuing their investigation of the fatal traffic crash which occurred shortly after noon on Sunday, August 4 on Fairfax Boulevard just east of the Kamp Washington intersection.

Initial investigation indicated that a silver 2004 BMW 530I was travelling east on Route 50 and had stopped for the red traffic signal. As the light cycled to green, the vehicle quickly accelerated across three lanes of traffic and continued briefly onto eastbound Fairfax Boulevard. The vehicle left the roadway and continued across a median, finally striking the exterior of the building complex at 10955 Fairfax Boulevard occupied by T-Mobile. The driver of the vehicle, Vladislav Bochkov, 29, of 4164 Lochleven Trail, Fairfax, did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, and was transported to Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There were no other occupants in the vehicle and nobody else was injured at the scene.

Anyone with additional information (photos or observations before or after the crash) about this incident is asked to contact Sergeant Phil Thiessen at (703) 273-6353 or by email phil.thiessen@fairfaxva.gov.
Contact: Sergeant Kyle Penman, Public Information Office

Interesting that it doesn't mention anything about any reports from the Medical Examiner (neither in progress or completed).

The details of this accident have been nothing but sketchy. It doesn't take a month to figure it out (mechanical, medical or traffic related).

Usually when details like this are sketchy or missing it means suicide or suspected suicide. The FCPD never talks about those cases.

I think I knew him pretty well over the past couple years. I last saw
him in July and he was very happy at that time. He had just graduated
with an MBA in May. Vlad had a new career in mind and his whole future
before him. As far as I know, there were no particular problems in his
life. He had a lot of friends and enjoyed a lot of things. I don't think suicide applies. But it's up to the authorities to prove me wrong or his family to say something.

This would explain why Mr. Bochkov's car accelerated from the stop light and sped into the store. So would a heart attack, if his foot pressed down on the accelerator in his pain.

For Phil B. On August 20 you wrote "What I don't understand about Ukrainian names is why females in your family are "Bochkova" and the males are "Bochkov"? Excuse my ignorance. Maybe you can explain it to me."

In the Russian language names determine ownership of something or an affiliation. For example, in English/Russian transcription:

The Lord of the manor = Lord manora
The commander of a regiment = Commander regimenta

It is the same way and forms women's names as an affiliation of marriage of children. So "Bochkova" is a Bochkov affiliatio.

I re-watched the Channel 7 report of the accident. The cop, of course,
went out of his way to report on Mr. Bochkov's not wearing a seat belt.
But what he only touched on was the air bags not deploying. The more I
read or hear, the more it sounds like his BMW failed to control the
accelerator, the brakes didn't do any good and the air bags fails. The
latter might have made some different in the outcome for Mr. Bochkov, but
at the fast speed he was going, I begin to doubt it. Of course, you car
experts out there know more about this.

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what happened to the car? Was it towed to a police garage or examination center? Were the breaks examined for failure? Or was it simply towed away to a junk yard or scrap contractor?
