I am amazed by how many people drive BMW's in Fairfax County
Posted by: Amazed ()
Date: July 28, 2013 09:17PM

I moved here from North Dakota 3 months ago. If somebody drove a bmw in my little town they were considered very well off, and I mean VERY well off.

I am amazed by how many people drive BMW's around here. Mercedes too!

Hopefully one day I'll be as lucky as the people around here!

Same where I came from.

Benz, BMW, and Lexus are standard issue around here once one reaches a comfortable income level. Porsche for the well paid youngsters, Nissan Z for those young-uns' on their way up the ladder.

Yes, we have two of the above makes in our garage.

You know what's even MORE amazing? The number of BMW's in operation here in NOVA with broken turn signals...

It's a bullshit status symbol around here. Most people drive them not because they appreciate the cars performance but because they feel the need to fit in.

Which is evidenced by the number of BMW's you see here with automatic transmissions, especially the roadsters. I will never understand anyone who buys a performance car without a 3rd pedal. I get the whole "for sitting in traffic" but...if you're going to spend that money and prefer an automatic there's other cars available to you.

99% of BMW drivers are status seekers and wannabes who would pee themselves if they ever got the rear end out. And that's coming from a long-time BMW owner btw.

And probably 5% of them are paid for.

BMWs are pieces of shit. Wait till yours breaks down and see how you like getting fucked without even being kissed first.

Nope, not anymore. But that's a recent development. It doesn't explain all of the pre-2013's running around here with slush boxes...

@Huh???: "Got the rear end out" means you're driving like such a d-bag that you're causing the rear tires to lose traction.

Contrary to all the hooning, drifting ricers out there...

The quickest way through a turn on pavement is maintaining the point right BEFORE any of tires break loose. If hanging your ass out was fastest, you'd see F1 cars setup to run that way.

Owning a BMW does not equate to wealth. There's plenty of people who own BMWs who live in some pretty crappy housing areas.

As to BMWs in North Dakota, you have to realize that BMW hasn't released a front-wheel-drive vehicle (until it was announced recently) within the U.S. I don't think I'd live in a barren, cold area with lots of winter snow and have a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.

BMWs are the biggest fuckover cars going. Mechanics love to see the look on your face for the two hundred dollar oil change they just shoved up your ass sideways.

I almost forgot they throw in the "Free safety check" where they tell you the brakes need replaced "Soon". Soon as in before 2018. Front disc pads and new rotors you are looking at $1,500 easy.

Gee, thanks for the tip. lol You'll have to come up to Summit some time and show us how to do it.

There's a right way and a wrong way to do everything. If I could carry speed through a corner and keep traction like an F1 car, then I'd be more than happy not to. Lacking that, generally a little over gets you around quicker. Watch the GT3 and similar cars as a better comparison.

But given that I was talking more about just having it just kick out a little in the rain, none of that's particularly relevant.

I can't. The only thing in my driveway is a 1970 Ford Torino 429 CobraJet. Because...cubic inches. Sorry.

Try Westchester County, NY. BMWs are like taxi fleet vehicles up there. Part of the reason is that BMW pimps out their cars pretty cheaply on lease. Almost any douchbag earning $75K can afford the lease on a 3 or 5 series.

They're over-engineered and when they break down you'll wish you were dead, but until they do they run like stink. Even Clarkson (ask the Stig if you don't know who he is) said that his biggest problem with the 3 was that they're too good, so well designed that it's boring. Even so, turn off the spin part of the traction control system and they're fairly lively again. They'd be more fun with a stick but there we are.

My biggest problem with them lately are the fucking run-flat tires. Finally wore out the first set and put some proper regular tires on. All better now.

Guess that explains why you're so skeered of losing traction. lol

But nice old car if you're not bs'ing. I'm old enough to remember them when they weren't old cars.

Wrong! BMW still gives you the option to get a manual. I have a manual in my 2012 M5. I love the feel and control I get with it but it's definitely slower then a the dual clutch automatic which is the standard choice.

In this day and age I can understand why people would choose a automatic, they are faster, get better gas mileage, you can shift from steering wheel paddles, programmable shift settings, etc.

For 2013 and in the 2014s You can still get a manual transmission on the BMW 4 series coupes, 3 series sedans, 1 series coupes, Z4 and the M3!

BMWs are for vain and stupid people. There is a NOVA student working for me making about $11/hr..she did not do well in HS or college but feels the need to drive around in a used 5XX series BMW, about 10 years old. There are others in my office (mostly black and Arabic) who feel the need to be in a BMW. I can't understand why someone who makes a fraction of my compensation feels the need to drive a used car with such high maintenance costs. Some of it is cultural (black, Persians, Arabic, Pakis) feel it affords them a certain staus within their communities. I'm all OK for spending the $$ if you can easily afford it...nothing wrong with that. The issue I see with most BMW owners is that most can't afford them! Most basic millionaires are actualy driving Toyotas and Fords..LOL.

Of course.. also you don't have to dick around with the clutch (feet) and your right hand every 3 seconds in stop and go traffic. I know some people like the nostalgia but driving a manual basically amounts to using a rotary phone. I'm sure if you do it enough you can dial quickly but why do all that work for no reason and still be slower?

Best driving car I've ever owned was a 20-year-old porsche 944. It leaked oil, was shit to maintain, not all that powerful, and a bitch to stick, but it had wonderful balance and the best pure road-feel ever. Driving that thing fast on back roads was pure joy my bmw will never provide.

Not following the logic between recognizing the superiority and benefits of an automatic transmission and relating that back to driving a Prius. Is it because a Prius like most cars in the US generally come in an automatic? or did you really just want to mention Prius in this thread?

The 3 Series is a great car, and when I bought mine it was a pretty good value. The base price was $30,500 and the only things I added were the Sport package and the winter package. Going with a manual saved about $1000, and I prefer it that way anyway. I paid cash for it. Maintenance, which includes all scheduled service, oil changes, brakes, etc. is included for the first 50k miles. I extended the plan to 100k miles for about $2k. When I take it in for service, they usually give me a loaner car and when I go to pick it up they have washed it. Now, that my 100k maintenance plan is expiring, if the maintenance gets to expensive I'll sell it and get a new car but I'd like to keep it another 50k miles. It handles great, and at 80mph it feels like you are doing about 40.

Only a "light loafer" would buy an auto beemer. Most women I know bought a manual. Manipulation of the controls separates drivers from compensators.

What's the difference between a porcupine and a BMW?

With a BMW the prick's on the inside.

So you have a sample set of 2 and they're both family members I bet (mom and sister?).

You will also be given a 2013 CSB Award.

I'd rather push my Volvo than drive a BMW.

BMW's are nice, don't get me wrong, but how many older Beemers do you see on the road ?

Not very many, eh ?

Now think of it, how many old Mercedes and Volvo's do you see on the road ?

I love these threads, the house, the car, the income.....

So deluded some of you are, you give your lives to the corporation, in exchange for what ?

Status ?

Really ?

So sad.

I live in a cabin that is less than 700 sq feet, is heated by a wood stove, electricity is provided by solar panels and a battery bank, and I drive a 1982 volvo wagon that is literally rusting apart, the motor has over 350K on it and it still runs like a Swiss watch.

I bought it 10 years ago for less than $1000.

The savings ?

That's all going into my retirement villa in Mexico, soon to be constructed next year.

Thanks NANA !

My old man always quipped "Son, never buy a car you can't afford to total".

The only thing more annoying than imported car owners are one that bitch over every little nick and scratch on their car. Don't get me wrong, I am all about taking care of your things, but don't be so naïve and buy a car that will be driven in this area with the expectation it wont get fucked up at some point.

If you really are Johnny Money Bags then you wont stress about every little dig and scratch you find on your car because 1) You can afford to fix it and 2) You don't care about resale vale.

I agree there are a lot of BMWs around here but that is what you get in afluent areas. It does not mean they are all weathly. If you are going to be stuck in traffic all day, you may as well make it more enjoyable.

What I don't understand is the need for an 8000 sqft home with just two people.

There is no doubt people are trying to compete with the jones's...

Wow......now manliness is measured by transmission choice?

Little do you posers even know that most high performance race cars, Im talking 24 Hours of LeMans LMP1 and GT Class type stuff, have automatic clutchless transmissions.

Wow! They even have drugs so you can get a hard on.
Anything is justifiable when you are lazy.
Automatic transmissions are used because it's 24 hours.

Stuck? As long as the AC works, who cares.
Actually the new nazi cars turn off automatically when static.
If I'm gonna pollute then at least let me be cool while I'm wasting my life in traffic.

Well Mario, youre wrong. Because they use the same trans in the shorter races too.

It's because they shift faster, more reliable, and use less parts.

So does a vibrator. Better keep this on the down and low thou.
I still like sticks and pedals. They keep my chopper in the air and my old 356SE on the road.

They're not really an automatic trans. They're electronically shifted manuals.

Not any less parts than a manual. Most in fact are more parts and more complicated between the actuators and computer controls. They do shift faster.

Also, if there's a problem with theirs they just go get another off of the team trailer. The straight manuals are bad enough in the BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, etc. I hate to think what some of these new transmissions will cost to replace. Most of even something like the 6-speed Getrag manuals you'll find like two other shops in the country beyond BMW who kinda sorta rebuild them, so you're stuck pulling from wrecks or paying stealer prices.

Correct!! A good set of tools and YouTube is all you need. I refuse to pay someone to something I can do for myself. I even have the tool to reset the service lights after performing any maintenance.

WoW.... Rebuilt a few engines on the 3 and 7 series. Most light loafers don't even know how to check and top off the oil. Why use a reset tool when you can buy software for the ECU? Then you can run diagnostics and modify the performance.
Personally I drive a Porsche. The 356 and 911 without all the silly crap. The 356 is 50 years and restored to oringinal condition.

Some buy to compensate while others drive to enjoy. The 356 is best served with a beautiful blonde, jeans and a joint. A air-cooled 4 cylinder rear mounted motor producing less than 100hp won't compensate for much. But hell, the lady is already in the bucket seat.

I see no value in re-tuning the engine. If I had the 335, I might consider it, but without the turbos and dual exhaust the cars are just daily drivers. The reset tool is only used to turn off the idiot lights on the dash.

Both BMW and Mercedes have entry-level and mid-level models that cost less than my American made, union built car. They may be a status symbol, but only to folks who don't know what they actually cost.

Most of the higher end luxury cars have trannies that work in both automatic and manual mode, and many American sports cars, like mine, also do. That way you get the best of both worlds.

A lot goes into buying a car, and the folks who think they need to buy a German made car to fit in around here need to think again.

amazed? how about frightened?

gov workers lift of a finger gets hours of planning and sweat from private / local workers. they jail or call insane anyone who is against their high pay.

i had a german vehicle once (a cheapo though). nothign against them.

but they got shares bought up by Chrysler when they were doing BAD ($8/gal gas in germany, and auto workers working 1/2 day at the time)

now after the loan they have renewed facilities, make luxury cars beyond what luxury needs: and them and Fiat are claiming they own Chrystler

BUT THE US TAXPAYER bailed out chrystler a few times. so how coudl it be two foreign countries with failing auto firms getting loans from a USA failed firm (who itself was on a loan) and all of the sudden have new auto lines in their own country providing jobs: ours is still failing, and they are claiming they own it?

hmm!!!11

gotta admit their diesel design is good :) but who paid?

Nobody is the 'Metro' area loves or gives a rats ass about their country. They are government bots that would sell their family for money, let alone their country.

For the same price of a 5 series sedan,
you can get a new Ford Taurus AND a new Ford Focus.

Economics anyone?

What's with all the men driving BMW's with receding hairlines? They'd look way better with some hairplugs and a Honda. Kind of like the fat lady with and LV bag, what's the point?

I agree. Especially when you consider how much better Mercedes-Benz & Audi cars are by comparison.

Another prominent BMW driver is none other than Tara Brach. Brach is a psychologist and meditation teacher. She is noted for having received endorsements from FCPS and plans to start a "mindfulness" initiative there.

Cars don't have hairlines.

"What's with all the men with receding hairlines driving BMWs?"

Performance wise, bmw are far superior to Mercs. Mercs are better for luxury and comfort. They are perfect for retired women and arabs. Audis look nice, but still aren't quite as fast or nice as a BMW. They cost less which is a plus.

I'm talking about regular models that you see everyday, and not the sport ones like RS/M/AMG.
