Hi Karina,
Crime was higher in Fairfax County, both in rates per 100,000 and in overall numbers, in 1980 than it is today.
In 1980, we were facing a bad economy, one that will possibly be exceeded in the next 2-3 years. Yet, there were very few Hispanics in Fairfax.
But, of course, it's 'just a joke' and 'I shouldn't take you so seriously.'

When all your 'jokes' are about the same group, it stops being very funny.
Crime was higher in Fairfax County, both in rates per 100,000 and in overall numbers, in 1980 than it is today.

I remember all the gas station robberies in Vienna during the 1990-91 recession. One guy even got shot in the head because he couldn't open the safe.
Crime follows the economy inversely. It goes up when the economy goes down, and crime goes down when the economy goes up.
If the economy continues to squeeze the working family man with a few kids, a mortgage and whatever amount of credit card debt, it makes sense that some of these guys are going to get desperate. Some of them will commit suicide, some will decide to get money any way they can to keep their house of cards from falling.
I even know of a guy, a west point classmate of my father's, who worked for an investment bank in Chicago, who killed himself. At least he didn't turn to crime, but he did what he did for the same reason many people turn to crime.
Desperation.
