Why the police get their car washed every week
Posted by: Joe the Plumber ()

A few days ago when I was at the local car wash (Embassy Auto Wash in McLean) I noticed FFX police cruisers getting washed. Not only did they get washed they got the ultimate package because when these cars came out they were looking pretty good. I asked the man at the counter how many police cars they get each week and he said too many to count. Now I have no problem with police cars looking nice and clean but when the county is crying that it will go bankrupt because it has no money I just don't understand this practice of police wasting money on car washes. Maybe there is something I don't understand about this issue.

I can't help you with all that you don't understand, but if what you say is true, I know where I'll be opening up a donut shop.

Probably for the same reason that the police don't walk around in torn, dirty uniforms. As representatives of the state/county/city/etc., they can't look like a bunch of bums.

With all the money the police make from ticketing the drivers who flash their headlights and have expired tags, I would certainly expect them to have nice rides.

Studies show that washed and clean police cars get more respect, thus officers are able to carry out their jobs better.

If a cop car pulled up that was a piece of shit you'd laugh; same concept.

If these were normal times I would understand but I guess since most of the posters on this board makes loads of money you guys have no idea that we're in a recession and the county won't even repair broken street lamps because they cry they have no money for it.

police cars always get free carwashes.... what carwash place in their right
right mind would charge the police for carwashes? Have you seen how many
illegals are working at car washes?

did you bother to think that the county has worked a deal with embassy autowash and that the car wash only costs the taxpayers about 3-4 bucks. the county gets a volume discount since just about every county agency takes their cars there. and really what does it matter? would you rather they not keep up with the cars and let them go to shit? if it makes you feel any better, the county won't be purchasing any new vehicles next fiscal year. of course im sure that you'll still find another reason to bitch about county spending.

Joe,

I thought you were pulling in 250 grand a year.

That is correct. Embassy is listed in the county's contract register. The contract expires in Feb. 2008. It does not list their rates, but it looks like they priced the bid for 785 washes (sedans and station wagons).

Quit living in the past, dude. February 2008 has come and gone. We are already into October. Get with it.

If you're so concerned about this, you know you could offer to help the cops wash their cars by hand. But then wouldn't that waste a lot more water, since most carwashes reuse a good portion of their water.

There used to be a dunkin donuts around the corner. I don't know why it went out of business considering all the cops that eat and shop in Mclean. I mean, you've got the entire balls hill district going to Mclean Pizza, and the secret service, cia security, federal facilities security and park police going to giant and 7-11.

365 days in a year and 785 car washes with probably a fleet of more than 100 vehicles, that's many car washes per vehicle.

I did see on one of the COPS shows where there was an officer who washed his car each morning by hand to start out his day. If I had to drive around all day in a car I'd want it be clean also. It's almost like wearing clean clothes to work.

(And I might add that with the right equipment and hook ups, it shouldn't take more then 5-10 minutes to wash a car.)

Doesn't seem to be much concern about how often firemen wash their vehicles...

Of course, they wash them while they are bored, instead of just sittng around waiting for a call.

I'm sure if they had to patrol a district for their entire shift, the county would pay to have them washed since they wouldn't have the time to wash them by hand.

I'm glad nobody told the OP that Kip Killmon's Tyson's Ford has a contract to repair FFX County police cars. Just imagine how upset he'd be to find out that the fairfax county police department is spending money to make sure their cars are maintained. What a waste of money.

Yeah, but Troopers are issued the car...they take it home and can drive it anytime they want. Nobody else drives their cruiser.

The local popo mostly use pool cars....driven by any and everybody.

I saw a state trooper at the same car wash today spend 15 minutes unscrewing his stupid 10ft long antennas, get his car washed and spend another 15 minutes wiping, cleaning and putting back on those antennas. Taxpayers just paid for 30 minutes of nothing so this guy could jack off with his car!

clean cars is part of a concept of "impression management" and also these vehicles are eventually auctioned off. If they're clean and rust free the county gets more at auction. If you amortize how long it will take a cop to hand wash a vehicle plus the supplies it would be several times more expensive than a car wash contract. There can be money pared from the budget though. Some guys will have the same car washed everyday, a total waste. On the other hand someone else has had an issued car and hasn't had it washed in a year, so I guess it evens out. No vehicle should be cleaned more than once a week but that would require better record keeping on the cops part for no additional personal benefit, hence laziness kicks in.

Think of the car as the cop's "office". Does your employer pay for a cleaning service to empty the trash, vacuum and wipe down the tables in your cubicle? Same thing.

Maybe you could just approach one of the cops and ask them about it. Or is is just easier to come into a faceless forum like this and bitch about it? Don't bother, I already know the answer.

Unlike you who probably takes a dump in his/her pants when you see the cops, I did ask a cop about this. He simply told me it was so his car would look clean. When I told him I see a lot of dirty cop cars as well he told me it was up to the cop driving the car. This makes me think the dirty cop car cops care about the taxpayers money and don't waste it while the clean ass cars cops could care less.

Did you hurt yourself thinking that one up? Man all this attention to such a completely stupid point, if you actually did something worthwhile with your life who knows what you could figure out.

And why would I crap my pants when I see a cop? I actually LIKE cops-and realize the sacrifices they make to protect me and my family. I don't come into a faceless forum like this to bitch about them and the stupided inane crap that encompasses their job like a friggin car wash like you do.
