I agree, I love my glock. I love everything about it. The "safe action" SUPPOSEDLY makes it so it will never fire unless the trigger is pulled (No accidental shots). It's a little weird to get used to not having a traditional safety at first...

In terms of quality, most big brands are very comparable. What really matters is how it fits your hand and the feel you get from the gun.

Have you ever held/fired any of the guns in question?

Yeah fired all sorts of glocks a lot, but need a much smaller gun. The walther is way cheaper so wondered if anyone had any experience with it?

Need to go and test fire it but can't find a shop or range that has it?

I currently own a Glock 26 and previously had a Walther P22. As you already know caliberwise those are two different type of firearms.

The Walther P22 was more a novelty-collectors item for me. I cant speak for all .22 cals but this one jammed on me alot at the range. From cheaper ammo to the expensive, this is not one gun I would use for personal defense.

The Glock 26 is what I carry for personal defense. Its lightweight and easily concealable. Be sure you get the Pierce grip extension for the mag. If not, get used to gripping the gun with 3-4 fingers. The only thing that sucks about owning my glock is I cant find any damn 9mm rounds anywhere. The only place I can find them are at gun ranges that buy boxes from walmart and mark them up 100%.

Practicality and function, I'd choose the Glock 26.

Theres a gun show coming to Dulles Expo on July 24th. Maybe you can score a 26 for less than 550 there and some cheap ammo.

Best of luck

Sorry for the second post but I forgot to mention...if you really want to try before you buy...(and I hate this place)...Go over to Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, VA. They have a Walther P22 that you can rent. They sell the Walther there for about 360-400.00 but I got mine at the Nations Gun Show in Chantilly for 250.00.

From my cursory research, it seems the prices are pretty close. Go with the baby Glock, man!

Walther:

Glock:

Edit: Good call with the grip extension, Rick... Don't want that shit slipping now...

Pffffff... With a 9mm, three fingers is all you need.

Now, a .40 or .45, on the other hand...

I would also have to say go with the Glock, however they are both a different type of animal. The P22 is more of a range / plinking gun as it is merely a .22, the Glock would be better for personal / home defense.

That aside, the P22 has had issues in the past with it's slide cracking. It wasn't made out of the normal steel as per most handguns, but instead a zinc alloy. I do not know if this has changed or not, but the second thread I've linked below is fairly recent, so you never know.

P22 Slide Breakage:
http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172363
http://glocktalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1019873.html

I also suggest you rent the Glock 26 (if you haven't already), as it's smaller size and lesser weight might make it a bit less controllable for some, which in that case you should try the Glock 19 which is a little bigger, but still easily concealable. Either way, you cannot go wrong with a Glock. I've had a lot of experience with them, especially the 17, and they are very easy work with and replace parts on.

As much as I dis Blue Ridge Arsenal, they have a lot of handguns you can rent for their range. Decide on need and size, then go see what they have to try out. Deciding based on a brand name may just result in wasted money.

Any experience/opinions on the Glock 19 vs. Glock 30?

Actually, I'm interested in opinions on 9 mm vs. .45 ACP (in general) for an easy-to-handle weapon for self-defense. I'm not especially interested in concealed carry.

Also, any seasoned shooters know if the local ranges (esp. Gilbert's) let you rent these models to try them out?

Don't buy a handgun based solely on the brand. Go to a range, rent a variety of handguns and then go with the one that feels the most comfortable.

Any range will let you rent a firearm. It's in their best interests because it means you don't currently own one, or you are looking to buy another and want to try out a few.

If you are interested in a home defense weapon, do not go with a 9mm. They have more of a chance of overpenetration. Go with a 40 or 45 instead.

DEFINITELY GO WITH .45!!

Fairfax County Police recently upgraded from 9mm to .40. They didn't kill very many people with 9mm, but every person they've shot with .40 has died.

9mm is for pussies in my opinion. I carry a .40 and a .45.

It really comes down to being comfortable with the recoil. I have a Ruger P345 (.45) and the recoil is very sharp but manageable. I also own a FNP-9 (9mm) and there is little recoil. A 9mm is very similar to a .38 special in terms of felt recoil.

As far as stopping power, .45 ACP takes the cake. A 9mm will not hit as hard and the caliber is known to keyhole (overpenetrate.) The advantage to a 9mm is more capacity. The typical fullsize 9mm carries 15-17 rounds while the average .45 is around 8-10 rounds.

You are going to see a bit of muzzle flip in the Glock 30, as with all big bore, short barrel handguns.

Glocks are excellent quality and very durable, but I dislike them since they are double action only (no hammer to cock.)

HK, Sig, Ruger, FN, certain Smith and Wessons, some Berettas. All are excellent quality.

If you are willing to fork over the money, the HK P2000 is an awesome 9mm. I had the chance the fire one on a German military course and there is nothing like it.

EDIT: Springfield XD is also a popular polymer frame. STAY AWAY from Smith and Wesson Sigma series. They are a cheap version of Glocks and have known quality issues.

EDIT: The XD(M) is only in 9mm and 40 S&W right now, but I've always been hesitant in brand new designs. I've seen one too many recalls on new designs over the years.

.45 GAP ammo is hard to find. It never caught on in the civilian market.

EDIT: As far as jamming more, I don't know about that, but here is an interesting and scary article on the Glock 37. http://www.theledger.com/article/20080313/NEWS/803130481?Title=Haven-Police-Ditch-Glocks-After-Two-Explode

Here is a good site for you: http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/05/21/selecting-a-defensive-pistol-caliber/

I don't know how you feel about revolvers, but I strongly prefer them over pistols.

They are completely reliable; unlike even the most expensive pistols.

With pistols, some makes are more sensitive to ammunition brands and can jam with carbon buildup (Glocks are known to jam if not cleaned regularly.)

The only disadvantage to a revolver is reload time and capacity (average revolver carries six rounds.)

If you go the revolver route, nothing beats the .357 magnum, though you will deal with some brisk recoil. There are some revolvers that fire .45 ACP, which is pretty cool.

Which is ironic, considering the owner admitted he voted for Obama and caught hell over it.

BTW, Gilbert's isn't called Gilbert's anymore, the owner sold it and it has a new name, now. But it's still on the back of Terminal Rd. in Lorton.

Yeah, I remember that. I just have never had a good experience in there. The staff doesn't know jack shit about what they are selling, they have a poor selection, and the indoor range is very unsafe.

How, exactly, is their indoor range very unsafe? I've been there in the past and I can't say I saw any safety problems.

If the staff doesn't know what they are talking about, and I know at least one of them is a witless shitbird, that isn't a huge deal. You should never buy a firearm without researching it yourself. It isn't a complicated topic to begin with. Be a well informed consumer and don't rely on the store employee to educate you.

No ventilation for starters. Very poor supervision of people using the range. There are plenty of dumbasses using that range swinging around their loaded weapon at everyone. Go to an NRA range and see the difference.

No shit, but everyone has questions. They shouldn't hire employees that swear up and down to me there isn't such a thing as a 10mm or that 5.56 can't fire .223 Like you said, it isn't a difficult subject, yet every one of their staff members knows jack shit about firearms.

I'll agree that ventilation in that place is horrible. They do have ventilation, but it's very poor. I don't recall people being unsafe with firearms there, but it has been a while since I went last. I let my membership expire a few years back.

The 10mm Colt sidearm might not be an ideal long-distance weapon, and it's certainly no sniper's rifle, but it has the advantages of low weight and quicker target acquisition. You can reliably engage aggressors at ranges of 30 meters and more. Use a two-handed grip and brace the barrel against a tree, or use your dive tanks and rebreather as an improvised bench rest. Don't worry about "stopping power": One of those 10mm slugs opens up to about 70 caliber when it hits, leaving an exit wound you could toss a cat through, and bringing so much energy to a target that a hit in the extremities is often enough to drop Mohammed in his tracks.

... except that most situations where you'd have to draw your handgun happen at a range of about 10 feet or less. At that point, it's more about the stopping power of the gun and your ability to double-tap.

LOL I'm sure most people get in situations where they can use their dive tanks as a bench rest. Good luck finding many people that are comfortable with the recoil of a 10mm.

I'm sure you know all this, being an internet Navy Seal and all.

Be like WESTFIELD HS alumus Seung-Hui Cho and get both, although I thing Long Duck Dong actually got a Glock 19 and a P-22 to carry out his rampage.

Seriously though, For concealed carry that's reliable, get the G-26 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 gr 9MM+P.

The Walther is only good for plinking.

The few times I used their range it was always full of security guards getting their pistol qualification. You are right about the prices, they were always $50-100 more expensive than Virginia Arms.

eesh,

I’m thinking about buying a little gun.

It has to be slim; my hands are small... yet, it must be capable of blowing someone’s head off.

What are my options?

dear alias, there are many sidearms out there that are very helpful in resolving human conflict. however, if you are looking for one that is stealthy and powerful, might i suggest a .38 with a 2 inch barrel(with no hammer), dark colored? this small, but deadly sidearm is excellent for "close order combat" situations. I suggest purchasing a model without a hammer because a hammerless model will allow you to pull the the pistol from your waistband or from your pocket without the risk of the hammer getting caught on or "hitched" in your waistband, belt, or pocket as you are pulling the weapon out.

Also, please remember that your ammo is just as important as the side arm that you choose. For "close order combat" situations, you want maximum stopping power.. I would suggest a hard cast 150 grain WAD CUTTER BULLET. The bullet is made hard, so it won't deform or mushroom. It cuts/crushes a "cookie cutter", full diameter hole in human flesh just like it does on a paper target. It penetrates deeply (roughly 14 to 16 inches in human tissue) and its full diameter profile maximizes blood loss as it cuts and crushes (not slips or slides) its way through tissue. Although I've never been shot with a full profile wad cutter bullet, I must assume that the initial impact of that wide flat nosed bullet, is crushingly formidable. As a teenager, I took to the woods on a regular basis and killed many a critter with heavily loaded 38SPL wad cutters'. The effect of a full profile wad cutter on small game was obvious and amazing, compared to regular round nosed bullets. That flat nose, literally hammers living things. These bullets are hard and properly lubed and will NOT lead your barrel.

In terms of targeting, may i suggest that you aim for center mass (middle of the torso area)? this is the area that you can most easily reach out and touch with your newly purchased .38 calibre. if center mass is not a viable target for you, i would humbly suggest that you target the upper thigh area of the subject.. 2 shots to this area will bring your target down immediately and help him to see things your way.

i hope my advice helps you with your life challenges.

Well, this post was a bunch of bullshit. Did you cut and paste different sentences you found on the internet? It looks that way.

This statement is so fucking stupid I don't know where to begin; needless to say:

I just want a gun.

And, some lessons on how to handle a gun, properly.

Never would I go crazy....shooting up liberals.. or, even worse, that asshole, who cut me off, earlier today.

I want to be a peaceful gun owner.

Well, I would go through some sort of introductory course; the NRA constantly offers them.

With all the caliber and manufacturer choices, you really have to research to know what you are comfortable with, and what you can afford.

I don't lock myself into one particular mindset in the choice of weapons
but Glock's reputation is unquestionable. Personally, I feel very
comfortable with my Walther P-38 in 9mm. I've had it for many years and
know it's capabilities and limitations. However, I'm curious as to why
you feel a .22LR is acceptable as a backup piece. Seems a little under
powered to me unless you can confidently go for the eye sockets in a
stressful situation. If I were to carry a back piece (I never do) I'd
want something in the neighborhood of a .380. BTW, I picked up the
Walther for $425.00. It's used, German Military Police surplus and as
best I can tell, has probably had less than a couple of hundred rounds
fired through it before I bought it.

.45 GAP is NOT hard to find, they just don't stock it at local stores, speaking of those stores, I haven't seen any ammo on the shelves lately. I have about 2K rounds of GAP at home, I buy 500 at every gun show, Georgia Arms has it and since nobody shoots GAP you're assured to find it at the show after the "ammo sales rush" begins Friday after the show opens. I've never had a GAP round jam on me, but I keep all my pistols clean and serviceable so I hardly EVER see a jam.

Also, those Glocks that are exploding...

Most of that is happening in high use duty weapons that are not cleaned properly, gun powder residue cakes into the barrel causing the bullet to not fully seat into the chamber. The gun will still close and go into battery but the case is about 1mm from proper seat, causing a problem of overpressure on the rear of the casing because Glocks do not fully support the rear chamber (to aid in bullet reloading). If these cops would ensure the barrels were cleaned of the crud before a long range visit this stuff wouldn't happen.

Just get an AK-47 for like $400 if you don't want to clean it. I've only cleaned mine ONCE and it shoots fine.

My preferred carry weapon is the .40 Beretta 9000s. Lightweight, concealable, and accurate. If you're looking for a quality holster, you can't go wrong with AKJ Concealco. They custom fit to your specific gun, accounting for custom sights, shaved hammer, handedness, belt width, etc. Best, most comfortable holster I've ever owned.

That said, I have a friend with NYPD who carries a Kahr K9 as his off-duty gun (NYPD requires 9mm), and loves it. Kahr is not as well-known, and is possibly owned by the Moonies, but it's a quality handgun.
