Any electronics stores sell External TV Tuners

Bought a HDTV for my mother-in-law who has basic cable, no set top box. When I went to hook it up I then realized that it didn't have coax input. She doesn't want to pay to lease a receiver from Cox and the DTV Converter boxes only work with Antenna signals. Does any have an External TV Tuner box and know where I can get one in the area?

Radio Shack sells an AWESOME Digital TV tuner.

Ive had mine for five years now and it still works great.

It looks like a flying saucer on a pedestal so itt is noy hard to find.

It has an electronic three(3) stage signal amplifier, comes with a remote that

you can preset every station so that it adjusts to the right direction for that

channel w/o getting up off the couch.

Pretty awesome product!

I got mine on sale five years ago for $41.99

It will run you about $50 dollars today.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this particular unit because I have

litterally had them all.

Here is a link, but it appears it is out of stock right now. I think I saw a button on the page to find out which store has them though.

Best one hands down, is ZENITH.

Might want to try Best Buy also. Here is a link to the Zenith @ thier site.

Micro Center sells the tuners

EDIT: Also, you could get a basic DVD/VCR with a tuner built in (some of those still exist) and connect that to the TV.

Going back to my post from a few days ago this looks like what I need to solve my problem regarding OTA broadcasts. Searching the web, however, comes up with a lot of dubious options once you sort past the USB-based options that are designed for a computer and the ones that seem decent are not inexpensive. As pointed out on one of the boards this is not a high-demand item these days.

Given that Walmart has a 19" Visio LCD for $168 I might just bite the bullet and go that route.

One last question...can someone explain the difference/importance of QAM vs. ATSC (if that is the correct comparison)?

In a nutshell:

Ntsc tuner = analogue signal

Atsc tuner = digital signal

QAM tuner = tuner that picks up a digital cable signal (unencrypted)

OK, thanks...I guess that all that I need is ATSC if want OTA channels. After searching the web and a visit to Micro Center there do not seem to be any quality, reasonably priced options, so I am probably going to just bite the bullet and buy a new, small HDTV.

If anyone is interested, I found this unit at Micro Center for $100, but when you read the reviews it hardly seems worth the $60 (plus S/H) from Newegg.
