What to do With Extra Power Adapters

Over the past few years I have accumulated a rather sizable collection of power adapters and chargers (both AC and DC) for various electronic devices that we no longer own. Does anyone have a suggestion for a source to donate these to? I hate the idea of just putting them in the trash.

I tried the Free Stuff category on Craigslist without much success.

Clip the ends off the cables, peel back the covering on the wires and crimp an RJ-45 connector on the leads. Then take them to work and plug them into the network. The IT staff will appreciate the extra juice you're getting into the system!

Have you thought about donating them to a school or library? I'm sure one of them in the area could use 'em.

edit:

Clip the ends off the cables, peel back the covering on the wires and give them to eesh so he can get his rocks off by shocking himself in the nuts during gay sex.

A few months ago Fairfax had an electronics recycling day out near Fair Oaks. In addition to old PC's, I also had a big bag filled with old junk cables and power adapters. They had no problem taking them off my hands.

See if you can put them in the electronic recycling bins at Best Buy.

+1, I was going to suggest electronics recycling. I have a ton of adapters, old PC serial cables, etc. Time to clear all of that crap out as they aren't good for spare parts for me anymore.

They even took my bags of old cordless phones, real phones, a boom box, an old tv's, 2 old monitors, and cords galore, etc.

It's a very efficient system they have. I drove into a line of about 20 cars, and was out of there within 5 minutes. The workers lifted everything out of my trunk within seconds.

I got rid of 15 years of junk electronics within an eyeblink.

I would definitely go the recycling route. Odds are nobody can use them anymore, but they might be able to salvage the magnets and wiring involved.

Actually, Copper and other metals used as the wiring are quite valuable (up almost 5X from a few years ago). It might be worth stripping the wires and melting the metal down. Other than that, a recycling drop-off (I-66 Transfer Station) or local Salvation Army/Purple Heart would take them off your hands for free.

FYI...a friend suggested PC Recycler in Chantilly. They have monthly community recycling days and seem to take just about anything according to the information on their website. There is a small fee for monitors, TVs and hard drives, but you can reduce the cost via a donation of food or personal care products which seems like a reasonable deal. The next date is on January 9th.

While the cables and chargers are a nuisance, I have been looking for a disposal option for a heavy and large Apple laser printer that is taking up space in my garage.

Micro Center has replacement power adapters from Kensington that have worked well for me and and about half the cost of the OEM item - less if you can get one of the refurbished ones in a plain cardboard box (I think that I paid $45).

I have used them and the process is very easy and efficiently-run.

As for the Apple laser printer, another options is a "free to good home" craigslist posting, or go on FreeCycle.org and offer it there. If you get no takers by Jan 9 you then have that option.
