This is TRULY the end of an era here in the DC radio market. After 13 years, Andy Pollin has been replaced on his afternoon show by...Chris Cooley?!?!? Steve Czaban will stay on and they're also adding Al Galdi. Pollin will fill in for the vacationing Tony Kornheiser while he considers his future.
I like Chris Cooley...I do. But, there's just no way he can replace a local legend like Pollin. Honestly, I'm surprised they kept Czaban. Czabe and Andy would joke all the time after Snyder bought the station that they had to watch what they said. Czabe frequently scoffed at the notion that he had to change his material to avoid any anti-Redskins remarks while Andy always seemed like he would toe the line. And where did it get him?

Cooley's about to find out that 15 hours a week is a LOT of time to fill. So you have two clowns, and a jock. Not a voice of sanity in the room. Pass. 980's a horrible station, and I'm a big sports fan. You just can't listen to that crap. Doc Walker and Brian Mitchell? Really?

My drive home just got a lot worse. Cooley seems like a nice enough guy but then again he also seems like a dim bulb. What was great about Pollin and Czabe is that they are both local guys who knew a good bit about a lot of different sports with good references. Cooley is from Utah and doesn't the frame of reference. Maybe thats the problem with the DC market. The area is so transient that a local sports program can't thrive.

I emailed the station last night and got a return from Chuck Sapienza, VP of Programming who said Andy has been extended a 2 year offer but he wouldn't say for what and also to stay tuned for another big announcement. Hopefully, they're shit canning Kornheiser finally...

This impacts the Sports Reporters, the PM show on WTEM, formerly with Andy Pollin and Czabe, and now with Czabe, Al Galdi, and Chris Cooley.
Czabe's AM show on Yahoo Sports isn't affected, except that Galdi won't be on it now.

I don't much care if people disagree with me...but I did really like Andy and Czabe; it wasn't always perfect but they had a little mindless humor they talked sports, gave their opinions, I didn't often feel like they tried to come off as more knowledgeable than the average fan...Andy didn't routinely flount his connection to Abe
I liked they'd talk about the HS sports angle at times especially with one with MD connections and one with VA connections (even if it was McLean/Langley/Great Falls)
For me they give a nice 10-20 minutes driving home from day care with the kids and used to give me a nice distraction when I worked in Old Town and drove home to Fairfax.
I liked the birthdays that was always fun...I genuinely enjoyed the show...if they gave him an offer and he wanted more money than it was his choice unfortunate but his decision...I wish him well.
Since the Coach left; Doc and BMitch don't do it for me...and I have liked their schtick when they were with Coach (I know many people disliked the Coach for many reasons but while I didn't always agree with him, I enjoyed his opinions).
I listen to Lavar and Dukes and sometimes it can be okay other times its like putting nails in my ears and watching paint dry at the same times...I just don't appreciate how if you disagree with them and provide simple valid reasons instead of long drawn out explanations which frankly Lavar can't understand and Chad probably tunes out four words in that they degrade the listener for their opinion...if you basically blow Chad and Lavar up like you were so great and your such a gangsta they're like yea boy we roll wit ya dawg
There's this one guy that calls in a lot and he can rub me the wrong way but he's called Lavar and Dukes and Sports Reporters; I don't know Marcus might be his name I think he's a white dude in Maryland (he sounds white...how do you sound white LOL)...anyway, when he gets on there he gives incredibly good commentary and reasoning and its very opinionated but he also used to call Coachs show and this is the one person I have ever heard on any show that when he signed off the phone; they discussed his opinions and found very few flaws in his arguments.
Maybe they need to give that guy a show, I know I'd listen

Been out of the country and came back to hear Pollin signing off. I was shocked. Amazing Danny would cut a "brother" like that. Kornholer is such a dick -- I'd love to see Andy take that slot. To think that guy had a MNF gig. How in the hell did he ever score that? Someone had a good point about Cooley not being a local. It was always nice hear them reminisce as there aren't many of us locals around any longer. Sucks he is gone.

Listened yesterday. their "guest" -- their only guest -- was that TV bobblehead who used to work for channel 4 who is now sniffing jocks over at the NFL channel. What a pathetic vanilla 3 hours of radio!

I often wondered how Pollin knew so little about sport's despite being in the racket for 30+ years. But his old man crankiness mixed with Czabe's wisen heimer ways was entertaining. I also enjoyed many viewpoints from the Sports Reporters they'd bring in.
perhaps Pollin should try for a job with TMZ Sports?
I've heard enough of Cooley to find him quite a bore despite what he apparently perceives as his wild and crazy ways.

What I have caught on air so far has not been good. Gali is good but his voice overpowers everyone else. Cooley sucks all the energy out of the room with his marble mouth annunciations. Czabe is trying to hold it together. There is very little chemistry.

Lavar and Dukes blows out 980 in the ratings. I am a fan, it can be stupid at times, but they are funny and have a great chemistry together. I enjoy them a lot.

I think Pollin got shitcanned or(samhuffed) because his salary was too much and he was old and cranky. Lil' Danny fired him too help pay for Dullard Cooley.
Also by having Cooley on staff lil' danny shows potential buyers of ESPN 980 that he plans to keep the rights to air games on ESPN 980 with the station even after he sells the station. Well for at least a year. You know how lil' danny does things even if he flys low these days.

I read all the comments and the one that makes most sense is Andy Pollin's salary was too high so they brought in Cooley. Thats insane as we finally have a redskins season to look forward to and we need Andy and Steve's bantering all year long about it. Very bad mistake. The chemistry of Zabe and Pollin gets us home from work every day and relaxing at home afterwards. No other chemistry like that on the radio and this is a Redskins town first.
