I have never eaten at a Ruth's that was bad, if you're into red meat.

It's a steakhouse chain. I assume it is as consistent as a McDonald's is, so I would assume if one is good, they are all good.

Ruth's is very good -- much better than Mortons (an alternative chain steakhouse). The Palm in DC is better than both, though, if you want to travel into town.

Are you talking about the Palm located on 19th Street in DC?

I agree the location is strange.

Several restaurants have come and gone in that location, and all were fairly good. The last one had good food but awkward and confused service, but the other previous places were pretty good all around, and none of them were able to last in that spot.

Maybe Ruth's Chris will fare better, being a large chain and all.

Ruth is terrible. They cook their steaks in butter??? Good steak needs a little salt and pepper and that's it. Morton's is much better. I've not eaten at the Palm here but the one in NYC is pretty good.

Cooking in butter can actually be quite good, especially when grilling. But you have to use really good butter, not just a stick of Giant Brand or whatever. A cultured butter can really be good. That or some grapeseed or olive oil.

But otherwise, salt and fresh ground pepper should be the only other thing to put on a steak.

I enjoy pouring a nice layer of olive oil to fry just about anything.

I went to the Ruth's Chris in Crystal City in 2003 for my wife and my anniversary. The lighting was horrendous (I felt like I was in my grade school cafeteria), I was entirely too close to other diners (I swear the woman at the table next to me was Linda Chavez), and they got my order wrong (I ordered medium rare, they brought it out well done!)

I know I'll lose my indie cred, but my wife and I like/liked Outback better.

If you're looking for a steak around Tysons, there's certainly no lack of choices, I can think of at least 8 places right off the top of my head. And while I haven't yet been to that Ruth's Chris, I have eaten at the one downtown, and thought it was really good. But, if you're looking to stick to the Tysons area, I highly recommend checking out JR's Stockyards Inn. It doesn't have the uber-trendiness of Ruth's Chris- it's just an old fashioned, comfortable steakhouse with great food and good service. The place isn't trying to be old-school- it is old-school. Fleming's is also very good, but really the only place I'd recommend around Tysons is JR's. There should be more places like this around NoVA.

my family and I went there for a birthday party. the total tab turned out to
be $480.(including tax)

we left $0 tip for our server.

The food was absolutely amazing.(well, it's equal to all other Ruth's Chris locations)

However, the service was extremely bad. After the server took our order, it took 40 minutes before the salads arrived. The main course arrived 2 minutes after the salads, which meant we barely had time to take a few bites of the salads. Sure, it was probably the kitchen's fault, but our server didn't come to the table during the entire 40 minute wait to explain the cause of the delay.

it was the first time in my life that I left $0 tip and felt fully justified in doing so. I even told the server why there was no tip. The manager spoke to me and apologized.... I don't think I'll be going back to the Tyson's location ever. Only the Bethesda location for me from now on... (should have gone to Bethesda in the first place... been going there for 12 years and never once had bad service/food... only went to Tysons because it was much closer to home)

I'm surprised the manager didn't offer to comp your drinks or one entree or something, so that you could at least leave a minimal tip for the server, and to encourage you to return to give them a second chance.

That is poor management, especially considering the server is going to end up paying 7% of the check in taxes if he ever gets audited (or they may have added a rule to force restaurants to withhold 7% of the server's check totals automatically by now, knowing the IRS).

Constance (??)

How many of you were in the party. 6 or more? What is the policy for Ruth Chris' steakhouse for automatice gratuity?

Why wouldn't you be proactive (maybe after 10-15 minutes) and ask the server why your salads had not been brought to the table?

Have you ever worked in the hospitality industry?

You are proud of the fact that you spent $480 on an al a carte dinner and left no gratuity. How pitiful. Karma.

You obviously have never been there Cheetah. $480 at Ruth's Chris is only enough to feed 3 or 4. It's an upscale place for people who demand to be pampered and are too classy to get up and ask for something. Hard to believe people can still afford to eat there, but I do notice that those that have money are still continuing to flex it. I've seen a Lamborgini and a Ferrari within 24 hours of each other in the same location. And no this wasn't some upscale shopping center or anything. This was a neighborhood Giant.

Uh...duh...actually I have had dinner at that exact same location. However I don't demand the attention like those you speak of. Also, their service was average but I can honestly say the quality of beef was not that great. Something equivalent would be Bobby Van's or Smith & Wollensky in DC which are both great.

Wait, wanting a salad in under 40 minutes at a $100/person restaurant is 'demanding attention?'

Bringing you the salad, and then the main course almost at the same time is very common with the low priced restaurants such as Ruby Tuesday, Fridays, Applebees.....

These places flip diners to keep the tables making money.

Even if you make a specific request that the salad and the main part of the meal are to be spaced apart, chances are you will both at the same time.

Order the salad only, and after it arrives order the main course to prevent from being flipped.

Nobody cares about this because it's boring and nobody cares about boring things because boring things bore people and nobody cares about anything that bores them; nobody.

Nobody posted to this thread for 10 yrs because it was boring then and nobody cares about boring things; nobody. It was boring 10 yrs ago and it's still boring so nobody cares because it's boring and people don't care about boring things because boring things bore people and they don't care because they're bored so nobody cares; nobody.

Let this boring thread die because nobody cares because it's boring and nobody cares about boring things; nobody.

People like to read about dining spots. At least the people who can afford to eat out every now and then. There's nothing really special about Ruth's Chris, but even though it's probably more expensive than it ought to be, they still tends to get good reviews wherever they operate. I would say try it once and go back again if you like it. From my own experience, the steaks are fine, and everything else is okay-plus. If that sounds like it would be worth the money, have a good time.

I'd go to Ruth's if someone else asked and were paying. On my own, I'd prefer the Drunken Ribeye or Prime Rib at Sweetwater.
