Why would you want to join AAA?

I was a member about 20 years ago. I kept paying $20 or $30 a month or whatever, and all three times that I needed to get a tow truck for a disabled vehicle, I ended up waiting 3 hours or more. Every time I've called a tow truck on my own, it has never taken me more than an hour for a tow truck, and I even had a tow truck in less than 15 minutes a few times. The most I've ever paid for a two truck was $75, and that was to tow it from downtown DC to a dealership in Tysons at 3am.

The discounts, the TripTik map services and all that sound great until you discover maps.google.com and that just about every credit card company offers the same or better discounts (or that you can get those discounts some other way without paying AAA every month for the "privilege").

AAA is a scam. Or, at least, it is just a company trying to get you to pay them for things you can get elsewhere.

check with your insurance company. If you need roadside assistance (who needs maps these days) ask them for a quote. I have Gieco and it is about $12 for 6 months roadside assistance. The three times I used it, quick and easy.

Call AAA and ask to become a member, the deals they offer are not the best but you can always save $5 and get a free something and/or add another member for half price. It is true most discounts and mapping tools are available online, but there is always something you do or find that the AAA card saves you money on that was not available else where.

Regarding the service yes it's true it can take a while for you to be towed, or get someone to come out and do a tire change. It all depends on the priority level of where you are. If you're home with a flat you're a lower priority than someone on a highway broken down.

My recommendation to you is not to use your insurance companies roadside assistance. Every time they come out it's a claim, and you know what happens when you file a claim. Your premiums go up, in Virginia most companies don't increase your premium on 1 claim but you start having 2 or more per policy period you're getting screwed with your premiums.

Karin, Bob is entirely correct. It is a total rip-off.

The trip-tik benefits for travel have been nullified by maps & directions via free web services, the towing charges (say....if you had to call one yourself & pay out of pocket) can be recouped by not paying AAA fees in the first place.

You're paying for unneccesary 'studies' and lobbying for legislation that is pro-automobile all the way. And discounts on overpriced travel gear that you wouldn't be buying from them anyway.

On a similar note, I did a small stint working for AAA at their headquarters which was right here in Merrifield, before they moved to FL. Anyone know where they were located?

Remember AAA supported the "abusive drivers" fees

You bring up a good point. Most of these "organizations" or "associations" are really just lobbyist groups fronting as some sort of retail organization offering goods and services. They formed for a good purpose or cause, but as they grew they became less interested in their "charter issue or cause" and more interested in exerting their power on the political discourse, regardless of their membership's needs or intentions, and even maintaining their power, solely for the purpose of being a power, and offering the people in charge a level of status in Washington. I've seen the buildings some of these groups occupy. MPAA and AFL-CIO are at the corner of 16th and I, the end of the block that overlooks the White House. They don't want to serve anyone, they just want to have power.

AARP is also one of these groups.

I might even call the NRA that, but since I like the idea of gun ownership, I'm a little bit more prone to giving them a pass. But I'm pretty sure even the NRA's top people are more concerned about being in a position of power than they are about serving their membership.
