Looking for a good, reasonably-priced moving company (BBB etc) for apt move from MD to Western Fairfax. Any recommendations or experiences?

college movers or three guys and a truck.

Or just rent a U-Haul and pull up to any 7-11 in annandale or herndon and hire your very own moving crew.

i've been seeing some signs on the road advertising $55 bucks per hour with two people and a truck

but the cheapest legit thing i know of is "starving students". which is a few bucks cheaper that "2 guys and a truck".

three guys and a truck is better.

You get three guys. That's 50% more furniture moving power than two guys and a truck.

I've moved a lot, and I've never had a good experience with movers.
There are always things that get broken, and there are always things that "lost".
And most places will give you unrealistic quotes, and will impose additional unexpected fees at the end of the move, while holding your possessions hostage.

A long time ago movers used to be regulated, but not anymore, and the result is extremely bad.

We obviously need more government.

There are always things that get broken, and there are always things that "lost" without an all powerful government protecting us.

I moved alot, too, but I tipped well, and I discussed my move before the fact with my movers. I didn't treat them like servants or like I was ordering a blouse on the internet and didn't bitch at them the entire time they were packing my stuff. I even helped pack, and I helped them carry furniture to the truck. I bought them pizzas at lunchtime, had a cooler filled with water and sodas the entire time, and I made it to my destination with all of my furniture intact (maybe a few scratches) nothing stolen, and they were more than happy to carefully unpack my dishes and pots and pans and place them in the cabinets and help me with setting up some of my home theater setup.

If you think you are better than someone, they are going to make sure you understand that you are no better than them.

Don't bitch at the lunch counter, unless you like eating other people's phlegm.

I worked as a mover for a Mayflower place in college. Thurston is right, be nice and you're stuff will get there just fine. It's when you're an asshole that movers start to not care about your stuff anymore.

There are the exceptions though... Some people are just idiots and will break your stuff due to their own stupidity.

We recently had a really bad experience with Original Movers. The estimate on the phone was $750. The guys got here the morning of, and adjusted it to $2800. WTF??? For totally bullshit reasons too. We sent them away, and called JK Movers. They got it done for $1200 in 7 hours -THAT SAME DAY!

Call JK. They were honest and fair. AVOID Original Movers. They will scam you the day of your move, thinking you have no options but to bend over and take it.

I would suggest Beltway Movers. they moved all my stuff, quickly and safely. They were on time and even called before hand to make sure they had all the right equipment for the move. The moved all my stuff out of my old place and into my new place within four hours, I was so impressed that I gave the movers gratuity, on top of the price. The price was what they quoted me almost to the dollar. They really made the move a much better experience than what had previously done. I would say avoid two or three guys and truck, no insurance. private contractors etc. More than likely they just grab a couple of day laborers from Local 7-11

The last two times I moved, I just hired 4 day laborers and rented a u-haul truck. I packed up my own stuff, and had them load and unload it from the truck.

I Guaranteed them 8 hours of work, paid them 10 bucks/hour each, fed them lunch, gave them plenty of gatorade, told them to take breaks, and then tipped them 20 dollars each. I also told them I'd bring them back to the pick-up site, or to their home, whichever they wanted.

They had the entire house loaded in under 2 hours, came with me to the new house, and had it unloaded in 3 hours. This was last year during the July heatwave where it hit 99 that day. Not a single item was broken, nothing was missing, I didn't have any scratches or dings in the furniture. I just stood by the door and told them what number room that the box/item went to. I ran out of things to do for them after 5 hours, so they started assembling beds/shelving/desks and re-aranging the furniture. When I took them home, they all gave me their cell phone numbers, and told me that If I ever needed anything done again, to call.

All told, I spent about 500 dollars total for the move, and got much better service than I ever did with a professional moving company that I used for 8 moves while in the military.

People can bitch and moan about hiring illegals and day laborers from herndon, but they've been more honest and reliable than anyone else I've dealt with.
