Really not surprised this keeps happening given the piss-poor driving skills of people around here

The W&OD: when you're in a rush and slightly drunk, try the W&OD bike and horse trails! Perhaps you've drank a 12 pack and you're afraid of the police! No police on THIS bad boy, you'll be home safe in style! usually no tolls?! Best one lane road EVER!!! Take it at your leisure! Speed on it with reckless abandon! It's all good! The W&OD! Use it when you've been drinking!

If its a short cut and tax payers paid for it, then why not?

Why do bicycles ride single file on the bike trail where there are (usually) no cars, and side-by-side on roads where they are interfering with motorists?

Why do they keep to the right on bike paths, which have little or no shoulder, and take up the entire lane on streets, even when there are no parked cars?

People keep blaming their GPS for telling them to go on the trail. Now only if those GPSs could tell them to make a sharp right turn at the middle of the Bay Bridge...

Look if people use a "new" word long enough .. it becomes part of people's everyday lexicon, becomes accepted, and is adapted into a language.

I think we're witnessing the same thing here with cars on the trail. It'll just happen a few more times and bam! Cars allowed on the trail.

All of those clueless bicyclists use the roads. So it is only fair for cars to use their precious little paths.

If I have to share the road, then they should have to share the trail.

Doesn't help the sign that says autos are prohibited are all rusted up and affixed to the backs of stop signs. If the park authority wants drunks to see the signs they need to hang fresh bright ones on separate poles.

Well since bikes share the road, then cars should be able to share the paths right? Bikers are always complaining about fairplay right? Well I say let the cars go down the path.

It's too narrow for my luxury car. I don't want the wheels rolling on grass. Have at it.

If bicyclists can fuck with us car drivers on the road, why can't we run them down on their trails? Seems fair to me... ...

They need to put a one concrete post up in the middle so cars can't drive down it. They showed the entrance on the news just now, and to someone not familar with the area it looks like a road.

Ask an Officer: What Can Vienna Do About Cars on the W&OD?
Officer Gary Lose answers questions from readers
http://vienna.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/ask-an-officer-what-can-vienna-do-about-cars-on-the-wod

What is the deal with cars on the W&OD Trail and how are police dealing with the situation?

In the recent months there have been two highly publicized incidents on the W&OD Trail that involved vehicles entering the trail and traveling unknown distances.

These incidents, understandably, have prompted numerous calls concerning the actions of the Vienna Police Department.

In the first incident, the driver was arrested by Officer Tracy of the Vienna Police Department for Driving While Intoxicated. The Fairfax County Police Department also issued several additional charges against the driver.

The second incident was not reported to police but was released on YouTube. The video depicts a moped being driven on the path while the operator of the moped videotapes another vehicle on the trail. The moped operator explains the driver of the vehicle, which appeared to have been from California, entered the path erroneously and was attempting to exit the path while they were being videotaped.

It should be noted that both the moped and the vehicle operators were in violation of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authorities’ rule which prohibits the operation of any motorized vehicles on the trail unless otherwise posted. With that being said, in the first incident the vehicle operator was suspected of and arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, while in the second incident no officers responded to the scene as there were no calls placed to the Vienna Police Department.

The Vienna Police Department would like to remind citizens that they are the eyes and ears of the police department, and if they see anything they feel is suspicious or a possible violation of the law they should call- “We Want to Be Bothered!!”

There have also been many questions about how to prevent vehicles from entering the W&OD Trail.

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) maintains the W&OD Trail and is given the authority to place or not place barriers leading onto the trail from any public areas. The Town of Vienna therefore does not have the authority to place any type of barrier that would prevent a vehicle from entering the W&OD Trail. Should you have any questions concerning the rules and regulation of the NVRPA, you can obtain a listing from the NVRPA website. http://nvrpa.org/

Great little short cut for Smart Cars. No sitting and waiting in the pile-ups on Route 7 and 66--Great for saving on gas and time--should cut an hour or 2 off your commute...
