What kind of jobs do all the rich people in this area have?
Posted by: 933127 ()

From Mclean, Clifton, and even Langley there are tons of nice 4,000-6,000 sq feet homes throughout Northern Virginia. Obviously I'm sure some of them are doctors, dentists, orthodontists, and even plastic surgeons. But it can't be all of them. What are some of the other jobs these people have that allows them to own such wonderful homes?

Most are professionals (docs, cXos, attorneys,) but an equal number of small businessmen along with two income govt bureacrats.

I grew up in FFX (Vienna/Oakton) and when in high school, everyone's dad was either an attorney or a corporate exec someplace.

Pretty much every house in Vienna seems to be $1M+, and if it isn't, the modest house from the '50s that's there will inevitably be bulldozed to make way for one. What really gets me is that these houses, while very nice, aren't THAT special. Cost of northern Virginia, I guess.

People around the corner have lived in this one house for less than a year (it's brand new) and have a Mercedes SUV and Range Rover as, I guess, their daily drivers and just recently got a red, convertible Ferrari. lolwut

Maybe I should just go knock on their door and ask for a job.

It's a big mix really, but the others were right for the most part. Lawyers (both trial lawyers and the shitty Gov't fed paper pushing corporate type lawyers) Real estate people, Resteraunt and bar owners (tons of extra income around here means lots of entertainment money)

The rest are just upper level management at Gov jobs or Consulting/ Contracting firms.

Like someone said though, is it really worth it? You slave your ass off and sit in several hours of traffic a day, deal with snobby NoVA folks and for what? A house that costs you 3-4x more here than it would just about any other place (maybe SF, Suburban CT / Suburbs of NYC) might compare

Rich people do not have "jobs".

Doctors, lawyers or whatever may make millions per year, but since they have to work for it, there are not rich.

Although some rich people earn their fortunes themselves (Bill Gates, et al), it is usually passed down through the generations. It's called "old money".

The number one occupation of the rich in this area is being insufferable assholes. Its the one thing they are good at.

Other way around, actually. Most millionaires have to work for their money.

Most people with a college degree and over 30 are making over 100k around here.

Over 40 and you are really making over 100k

Mortgage Payment on a 700k house is under 4000 dollars

4000 is roughly 2/3 of what you are bringing home at 100k

Its tight for a single person but for married couples pretty easy

Outside of your standard attorneys and doctors, I'd have to say it's successful technology sales reps/managers and federal govt contractors. There's a misconception that Federal employees make a lot of money, but the reality is that contractors make more money. The Feds waste a lot of cash b/c they outsource everything and get ripped off by contractors in the process.

Not true anymore. Because there has not been a pay raise in a couple years, the federal employees have been promoted and bumped up to the top steps in each grade level. Feds now make $155,500 at the top of GS-15 and $136,771 at GS-14. SES and similar positions pay even higher, $180,- $200,000. Their contractor counterparts are making anywhere from 5% to 20% less on average. It's hard to make over $150-$160,000 as a contractor except for sales.

The DC area has a higher concentration of upper federal pay grades than the country as a whole. There are some lower level jobs, but the people in those positions generally live in other jurisdictions, not Fairfax County.

Federal employees have the added benefit of not needing to be productive or do any actual work, and are not subject to firing.
