Prince William County police officer hits, kills woman

WASHINGTON - A 25-year-old woman died Monday after a Prince William County police cruiser struck her while she was walking in a street under the influence of alcohol.
Prince William County police received a report of an apparently intoxicated woman walking in the area of Jefferson Davis Highway and Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. An officer driving a marked cruiser was responding to the scene when he struck 25-year-old Isabella Majano, who police say was in the officer's lane on northbound Jefferson Davis Highway near Crest Drive.
The officer — whose name had not been released — came upon Majano as he crested a hill less than a mile from where a caller reported seeing her, police say. The officer attempted to avoid hitting Majano, but a truck in the lane next to him limited his ability to avoid the collision, police say.
Emergency crews transported Majano, a Woodbridge resident, to an area hospital where she died Monday. An investigation determined she was under the influence of alcohol and was not in a designated crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Prince William County officials had not released information about Majano's blood alcohol level at the time of the crash.
No one else sustained injuries in the crash, police say. Speed was not a factor in the crash, according to authorities.
