$500 Dinner - Friends screwed by MP (Market Prices)
Posted by: Uncommon Sense ()
Date: July 13, 2013 08:15AM

Two friends of mine recently went to a restaurant and ordered spaghetti dinners. While at dinner they were offered truffles (which they thought were free or some kind of special). As it turned out the truffles were "MP" which stands for market price. The dinner was over $500. That's $50 for the combined dinners plus $250 per truffle!?!

Seems like common sense to me to ask how much something costs when the restaurant seemingly "offers" something like that, especially if its MP, but this particular incident seems very fishy to me. Has anyone else every had this problem?

Your friends are idiots. Spaghetti dinners and truffles? Yea, truffles are always FREE, and the Opus 1 is all you can drink for 7.95. Are you sure they didn't get Dorito Crunch Burritos and a bottle of Dom?

Supposedly these were truffles from Italy. Hahahhaha $500! I would never have paid that bill!

Let me guess...

There were women taking their clothes off in this "restaurant."

Anytime you see "MP" or market price or ANY OTHER designation which makes the price of a menu item unclear...you have to ask. If you do not ask you will need to be prepared to pay a lot for that item. Perhaps it will be unreasonable and perhaps not.

Some blue bloods would say, "Well, if you have to ask the market price on something...you simply can't afford it."

That's fine...everyone's entitled to their opinion. But, there is nothing wrong if you're not prepared to pay what they put on your bill for a market priced item in saying, "Pardon me, Garcon...what is the market price today on the truffles?"

Now, regardless of what they say...I ALWAYS enjoy responding with, "Oh my! That's an exquisite price! How affordable! Lemme' think it over..."

However, if you'd prefer not to come off like Paul Lynde regardless of how you actually feel about their pricing then a simple, poker-faced, "Thank you, waiter." will suffice. Your dining companions will make their own assumptions about your wealth and good taste by what you actually end up ordering. Feel free to ask for the market prices on ALL items, if it'll make you feel better.

Wegmans sometimes has truffles for sale which are located in a locked casse. Usually the price is $999.00 for 1, I shit you not. I don't get truffles.

Well, since there's a trend these days to outlaw stupidity and irresponsibility (eg., texting while driving), then perhaps there should be a law requiring restaurants to have servers fully disclose all prices when offering an item.

For something that French people find with pigs?

I just Googled, and I do believe you, but the jokes almost write themselves.

Are they actually any good? I've always assumed that they'd be an "acquired taste", and I don't think I'm in much danger of that happening.

Truffles are amazingly good, a delicacy in fact. Some larger truffles found can be priced in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"Delicacies" are usually shit that no one in their right mind would eat. The smart money says that you've never even had the smallest bit of truffle.

Sure I have, although not the more expensive kind. They are wonderful with dark chocolate, had some interesting samples in Europe some years back too.

If you are at Mortons or the Palm and the menu says MP, you either ask or be prepared to pay a lot, if it was at Clydes I'd be pretty pissed, there are certain expectations based on the relative prices on the rest of the menu.

A made up story, they asked, didn't buy them, but it makes a more OP to say they did.

They go very well with kopi luwak.

I am cultured and therefore demand that all of my food is found by pigs...and all of my beverages to be pre-processed through a cat's ass.

I also wear a monocle and a top hat. Go shop at Target...vermin.

I remember seeing those truffles. I thought it was $999 per pound. Not that that's any better.

They looked like little dried up turds.

You are correct, they are $999 a pound (not each).
