Northern Va. residents brace for furloughs
A day without pay is apparently the biggest worry for thousands of people in northern Virginia.
http://www.wtop.com/149/3381690/Northern-Va-residents-brace-for-furloughs

WASHINGTON - A day without pay is apparently the biggest worry for thousands of people in northern Virginia.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., says despite heavy debates in Congress on immigration reform, he heard more about the impending furloughs than anything else as he made the rounds during July 4 events this past week.

"Six-hundred thousand civilian employees at the Pentagon, for example, are about to be furloughed and that's very much on people's minds and making a lot of anxiety," he says.

Connolly represents Virginia's 11th District in Fairfax and Prince William counties. It is one of the most affluent congressional districts in the country and is home to thousands of government employees and hundreds of government contractors.

The Pentagon says roughly 85 percent of its 900,000 civilian employees will be furloughed for one day a week over the next three months. Those furloughs will start this week.

Defense officials have been able to shift money around to limit the furloughs, but thousands of civilian, military and contract jobs could be on the chopping block next year.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected to provide more details this week on how the next wave of across-the-board budget cuts will affect the department.

Furlough Days Start This Week for Many Residents
What are you doing with your unpaid days off this summer?
http://mclean.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/furlough-days-start-this-week-for-many-mclean-residents

Some federal government employees have already been through a few furlough days, but for many people those unpaid days off start this week.

That includes thousands of National Guard soldiers and airmen, civilian and military Pentagon employees and thousands of other federal government employees.

U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) told WTOP that he heard more about sequestration and furloughs than any other issue over the holiday weekend as he visited constituents.

It’s a financial hit many can’t afford, but that doesn’t mean furloughed employees have to sit home all day twiddling their thumbs: Fortunately, DC has many free, air conditioned museums and other things to do.

When Patch asked readers this spring what they planned to do with their coming furlough days, Northern Virginia residents said they’d be looking for part-time work or creative ways to make up their lost income, unpacking those boxes that have been sitting in the basement, reading a book that’s been sitting on their nightstand (or in your iPad or Kindle) for weeks or hitting one of the local public pools.

Congress should make about 25% of government workers part time.

Fire about 5 to 10% of them.

They are really a lot of dead weight liabilities and they suck.

And government will continue to suck or get even worse when you make 25% of the workers part time. Remember when government work was a noble calling (JFK days)? As long as people believe that anything government related is inherently bad, it will be so (oh, yeah, except for the military---they get a pass every time).

Furloughed government workers should go here:

JOBS JOBS JOBS

Or, maybe Sharon Bulova will hire them to work at Fairfax events. Or, Karen Garza will hire them as school spirit monitors.

Fuck government workers and the economy of Northern Virginia. It's about time for the local bastards, they had a pay correction coming their way.

I'll be the first to admit that Fairfax county has been riding high off the hog with government taxpayer dollars for too long.

Fairfax county doesn't need all the luxury restaurants, schools, fire engines, McMansions with pools and BMW's etc...

Christ... teachers, policeman, fireman, even plumbers make way to much for what they are really worth.

I applaud republicans for finally putting the axe to all these bullshit NOVA defense and government contractors.

Hey fucktard, they didn't put an axe to contractors. They are ducking over the DoD civilian employees. Contractors still have their jobs and over-inflated salaries. Do you even try to understand the world around you, or are you just blissfully dumber than a sack of bull dicks?

For working families, the struggle is painful, persistent and real: Hourly wages have plummeted to record lows, while executive pay has soared to record highs. There is no longer an income gap; there is now an income gulf. In 1978, the average American chief executive earned 26.5 times more than the average worker. Today, that gap is four times larger, with chief executives taking home 206 times more than average workers.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really apply to Federal workers jack(ass).

The average Federal worker salary now is about $78,500. About 25% of Federal workers make over $100K not including bonuses and benefits. And these numbers likely are on the low side for this area given the higher concentrations of more senior staff at agency HQs.

Slower recovery due to Sequestration
http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20130712/OPINION/130719641/1065/slower-recovery-due-to-sequestration&template=fairfaxTimes

The Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy released its 14th annual Virginia Economic Forecast last week. It was again authored by Dr. Christine Chmura and her team at Chmura Economics & Analytics of Richmond, the state’s leading private economic consulting company.

With Virginia facing the brunt of the federal government’s spending reductions known as sequestration, Chmura predicts that the impact on Virginia will be greater than other states. That is because Virginia received more federal contract spending than any other state. Fully 13.7 percent of the Virginia’s gross state product came from federal contracts in 2011, the last year figures are available. Even with this negative impact on Virginia’s economy from federal cutbacks, Chmura predicts that Virginia’s employment will expand by 0.8 percent in 2013 and by 1.1 percent in 2014. But this is well below the 1.9 percent annualized job growth in the state between 1992 and 2007.

Virginia receives a larger percent of its annual gross state product from federal government spending than any other state. Consequently, the impact of the across the board spending cuts due to sequestration will have a larger impact on our state than on any other and much greater than the impact on the nation as a whole. This will also be the case with the inevitable federal budget spending reductions that must take place in order to bring our national budget under better fiscal discipline.

At a press conference where this year’s annual Virginia Economic Forecast was released, Dr. Chmura made an important point as to why our state’s employment should continue to increase even though at a reduced level due to sequestration. She made the point that when the Cold War ended and many predicted that Virginia would be negatively impacted from the reduction in defense spending, that did not happen. That was because the high educational background of our work force and the ability of our industries to move into other fields. She predicts this will happen again with the federal government cutting back on its enormous spending habits.

This year’s Economic Forecast states that the nation’s economic growth “remains modest and uneven” and that the recovery from the Great Recession has been tepid. Chmura projects that the nation’s Gross Domestic Product will grow by only 1.4 percent this year and by 2.6 percent next year. This is due to continued economic lethargy in Europe which creates a drag on our economic growth. And, of course, an issue not touched upon in Chmura’s forecast since it is difficult to quantify at this point, we know that businesses continue to be hesitant to expand employment and investment with all the uncertainties surrounding the new national health care laws and the impact of the new EPA regulations on Virginia’s extensive coal and power industries.

Virginia’s employment expanded by only 0.9 percent for the year ending in March for an additional 34,481 jobs, slower than the job growth nationally. These new jobs have come from four sectors of the economy: education and health care finance, insurance, and real estate. The housing market in Virginia has improved by a significant 8.2 percent between 2011 and 2012 (the last numbers available for this report).

The annual Virginia Economic Forecast breaks out the economic impact and predictions for the future into the major areas of our state. It provides a guidepost to businesses and government as they plan for the future and for companies planning to come to Virginia or expand their operations here in the Old Dominion.

The growth coming out of the recession has been slower than in the past, the Jefferson Institute’s Economic Forecast predicts continue slow growth even with the impact of the federal spending cuts due to sequestration.

"Government" and "Worker" are two words that don't go together. Replace "worker" with "bureaucrat", "lard ass", "do-nothing", or "douchebag" and you'd have a phrase that makes sense.
