Huntington residents warned to move cars to higher ground

WASHINGTON - Residents in the Huntington area of Fairfax County are being warned to move their cars from low-lying areas.

Fairfax County officials are warning that rain and discharge gauges indicate there could be significant flooding as a result of Friday's thunderstorms.

They are telling residents in the areas of Fenwick Drive and Arlington Terrace to move their cars to higher ground.

The National Weather Service is calling for the chance of even more thunderstorms before midnight, and a slight chance of showers between midnight and 2 a.m.

Some of the storms could be severe.

Cameron Run rapidly rises flooding the streets of a Huntington neighborhood in Fairfax County Friday evening after heavy storms came through the area. (WTOP/Dave Dildine)

I saw the damage Cameron Run did to a parking garage down on Eisenhower 5 or 10 yrs ago. Cars were totally mudded, flooded, tossed around and probably a total loss.

You would think that ditch bed would be wide enough to accommodate some serious overflow, but apparently not.

The ditch bed did it's job for thousands of years. Then cometh greed, development and zoning for the basin. Early native Americans understood the terrain.
They moved up the hill.

Why do people continue to live there? How many times does your home have to be trashed before you move? BTW, are those homes insurable?

Really Sitting Bullshit?

I am pretty sure the stretch along 95 was widened and the banks reinforced in the last 20 years or so.

I've lived here 54 years. As long as I can remember Cameron Run has been flooding.

I get really ammused by all the hand wringing like it is somthing new.

Lots of houses were built in a known flood plane back when government didn't think its role was to protect people from themselves.

Since then, other people have bought those houses without checking or considering the consequences.

It is up to the folks who bought into that mess to live with it.

I think you're wrong Paleface. I know Four Mile Run got a seawall to pretect Arlandria, but I think Cameron got widened too around the time they built the little water park off Eisenhower.

Google it for and apologize and we never have to talk again. Ever.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cameron Run
Mouth Hunting Creek
Location Virginia, USA
Length 3.0 miles (4.8 km)
Cameron Run is a 3.0-mile-long (4.8 km)[1] tributary stream of the Potomac River, located in the U.S. state of Virginia. A third-order stream, it is formed by the confluence of Backlick Run and Holmes Run. It flows eastward from Alexandria and forms the border between Fairfax County and Alexandria before opening into Hunting Creek and then into the Potomac River. The lower course near Eisenhower Avenue is largely channelized and flows just north of the Capital Beltway until it crosses under it near Telegraph Road[2] The lower mile or so is tidal and was navigable in colonial times. Cameron Run Regional Park, a water park, lies along a portion of the stream. Cameron Run is part of the Cameron Run Watershed, which encompasses a total of 44 square miles in Northern Virginia (33 square miles in Fairfax County). The Watershed is made up of eight subwatersheds: Tripps Run, Upper Holmes Run, Lower Holmes Run, Turkeycock Run, Backlick Run, Indian Run, Pike Branch, and Cameron Run andSw its tributaries.[3]

Flooding concerns[edit]

Cameron run flooded in 2000 and again in 2006, devastating some of the low-lying parts of Huntington.[4][5] Due to increased development in the watershed, peak water flows have increased. Too much sediment from the stream, some of it from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project (begun in 1999), has reduced the depth of the channel, causing flooding problems. Local governments and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working on a solution.[4] In November 2012, voters in Fairfax County approved a $30 million bond referendum to fund construction of a levee and pump station to prevent flooding in the Huntington neighborhood adjacent to Cameron Run. So come on now...

I would have bet money that the area between Landmark and Telegraph had been widened or deepened.

You and I know those concrete banks didn't build themselves. Maybe you're right and it was more like 40 years ago. We both know it happened.

Anyway it's not my gawdammed fault your hillbilly ass is living in the river bottom.

It was flooding in the 1960s. Perhaps tropical storm related, but it was happening. I wonder if WaPo is searchable that far back?

It's been flooding forever and Cameron has been widened a number of times.

Camille cause big time flooding back in the 60s.

The first major work on Cameron was after Hurricane Agnes in the early 70s. They basically bulldozed the whole of what was formerly the natural creek from Beauregard Street all the way down to Huntington. That's when the general structure of what you see now was created and most of the rip-rap and other structures were put in.

From there you can pick up the more recent repairs and further improvements up to the Wilson Bridge project.

^ Actually, I shouldn't say the first major work since they'd obviously done some modification prior to that when the 395 and other major road work and construction was done, but up until then the creek itself largely was within its natural banks as it still looks now in the park area between Barcroft and Beauregard.

I heard the Eisenhower area was really swampy before the road, offices and hotels went in.

There is a pretty nice trail going from Barcroft all the way to Mt Vernon.
