Groundhog Nuisance
Posted by: AnnoyedGardener ()

I have a woodchuck problem. Filthy varmits started digging their way into my yard right after our pit-bull mix passed away. My yard backs up to the wodded area of a neightborhood park. You cant shoot a gun in the county so my options are limited. What can I do with these fuckers?

In virginia Groundhog season is apparantly all year round. I shot em with a BB-gun, but even with hollow point pellets it just pisses them off. I heard you can get 22 cal pellet rifles now, but they're expensive. I have access to a live trap, but isnt it illegal to relocate wildlife without a permit?

Anybody got any suggestions? I got 2 small dogs and these groundhogs keep digging holes into my yard, I'm afraid my terrier will get out through their hole and they're destroying my garden.

Whatever you do, do NOT mention anything about this to neighbors, the county, or anyone else who might turn you in to the lib nazis in the county govt. They will make your life a living hell for trying to get rid of a rodent.

You might try wolf urine. They make it in a powdered form.

Or you may try pissing on the perimeter of your yard yourself. But you will likely get an indecent exposure charge.

Herbivores can smell when a meat eater has urinated in the area and avoid it, unless they want to become a meal.

I used to piss in my backyard all the time. Scares the wildlife away and because I was drinking and it was easier than going inside.

Buy a large trap. Lowes and Home Depot have them. It has to be big enough to catch a large groundhog. The Havahart traps work well. They love apples, carrots, etc. Once you catch it, you have to kill it. Since you can't shoot a gun in residential areas in Fairfax, the most humane way to dispose of this pest is to drown it in a tub of water (trap and all)

They really stink, so be prepared for one hell of a stench. It is illegal to move the varmints to another location in VA. If you don't have the stomach for the smell and the screaming (they squeal when in danger) then you need to hire a private exterminator to get rid of it. Agree with the prior post-County government is absolutely no help. Good luck....

I have to laugh because I've often asked myself my foe, my enemy, is an animal.

In order to conquer him I have to think like an animal and whenever possible to look like one. I've got to get inside this dude's pelt and crawl around for a few days.

Who is the gopher's ally? His friend? The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit. I'm going to use you guys to do my dirty work for me.

Wow, you guys are real tough guys to kill an animal that is not threatening your life. WATCH OUT!!!! GROUND HOG BE DIGGING UP THE BACKYARD AND THREATENING MY LIFE WITH THOSE HOLES!!!!

Yeah, real big men. Fuck what Virginia says. Catch the critters and release them further out in the woods.

Geez, kill an animal because he digs holes in your yard.

If your pit bull mix did a good job keeping the critters out why don't you just get another pit bull?

Oh, so you wouldn't advocate killing it, just sending it away from its home, its known food sources, and its not yet weaned litter so it would have to start all over in a different place?

That's kindler and gentler, is it?

You will have to kill the animal. Groundhogs will return from relocation of many, many miles off. You could try to flood the nest in the night when they are asleep but it probably will not work. You could try smoke bombs, but again, probably won't work.

I recommend a large trap, once you have it trapped, shoot it, drown it in a giant trash can, or cover the trap with plastic and gas it with your car's exhaust (attachments for your exhaust pipe for this express purpose are available online).

Don't feel bad. . . It is a pest species that does real damage to gardens and in other ways. . . people and horses have both been injured severely and/or killed by groundhog holes-- riders are thrown by horses when the horse steps in the groundhog burrow, and people walking will break ankles or otherwise hurt themselves tripping over burrows.

If you're feeling very creative, order some "groundhog attractant" from a hunting supply place and paint on the pavement in a busy intersection. Once the animal is killed you will have to fill in the burrow THOROUGHLY or another groundhog will appear to occupy the vacant burrow quick as a wink.

Have you tried calling animal control?

@dh. I've hunted and trapped groundhogs all my life and no, groundhogs do not stink until you start to skin and gut them. They're rather clean animals and the only time I've seen one that was dirty was because I'd caught it in a leg hold trap and the ground was muddy.

Zapping it with some low electric juice. Clean it up real nice and thow it on the grill and pair it with a 90 minutes IPA Dog Fish Head. It'll be out of this world.

I was thinking I'd have to trap it and drown it. Thanks for your advice everybody.

I heard that animal control used to give out traps for free and would even euthanize them, but when I called the county they pratically threatened me for even asking about killing a varmit.

I bet the county would try to prosecute me for cruelty for even looking at the pest the wrong way. In the 2 years since my pit bull passed, they have established quite the colony.

BTW, my dogs sniff and pee on all of their entry holes. Carnivore urine doesnt help. Maybe a poodle and a terrier just dont have the same threatening smell as my pitt.

My dogs have been chasing them and I've been popping them with this BB gun, but it's time to get serious. They're really pissing me off.

I smell a rat here. Groundhogs do not live in colonies. You might be seeing a litter that hasn't left the den yet but they are loners by nature. Try again.

I have the same problem. They seem to be living under our house. I've grown kind of fond of them, but apparently the neighbors don't feel the same way. I could never hurt them, but I'd love to know a humane way to deal with this problem.

No way. My grandfather's recipe for groundhog:

1. Skin and gut the animal and tack it to a 1" thick wooden board.
2. Add seasoning to your particular taste.
3. Place in oven at 450 degrees, cook for 3 hours. Be sure to baste occasionally.
4. Remove board from oven, throw groundhog in the trash, and eat the board.

They may not live in true "colonies" like prairie dogs but they can and do aggregate in the same area. Not unusual to see more than one in a given area. The lot across from my wife's office has a bunch of them every year.

I disagree. You might be seeing a litter that hasn't left the den yet if you're
seeing more than one but they are solitary. They will tolerate others close
by if there is an adequate food source but they're territorial too. The
only interaction they usually have after leaving the den is for mating purposes.
As a teenager I used to hunt them for farmers and they paid me $1.00 each for
every one that I shot or trapped on their property. I'd clean them and sell
the meat for $3.50. (That was a long time ago) I wish they did live in
colonies so I could have made a lot more money.

Backyard bill-I suppose he may have crapped out of fear when he was caught in the trap-I can honestly say I've never hunted them, but this one really smelt bad,

Agree they are not in colonies, but it could be a litter, which means there will be bigger trouble long term if the problem is not addressed.

I also noted someone said they are under his house-that is the last thing you want to have. They need an exterminator more than annoyed gardener does.

Maybe you should break the law, catch it and take it to BIG ASS SISSY's house. I'm sure they'll take pleasure in taking care of the poor defenseless animal.

As the summer progresses, the young groundhogs will relocate and start their own dens. Where they go depends on availability of food. They love cornfields with a passion but will settle for just about anything else. Big groundhogs in Ohio live in cornfields (they fight too) and little groundhogs live in soybean fields. For the one who has one under the house, the quicker you deal with it the better. Every year we have a new groundhog living in the barn and have to set the traps or take a shot. Left alone, they will ruin your
foundation and rain water will go down the hole and soften the earth. I've seen old out buildings start to sag from neglected groundhog holes. Here's a video I found
on YouTube.

Update: Some irresponsible pit bull owners who were family of close friends couldnt take care of their dog and we ended up rescuing another pit bull. She's an absolute sweetheart and there are not going to be any more problems with these varmits.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I think ObamaDDD had the best extermination idea. I came to the same conclusion myself and was looking into purchasing a .22 air rifle before we got another dog.

I told the new pit bull the same thing I told the old pit bull, you catch one and I'll clean it and grill it up for ya. That's 5-12 lbs of high protein organic dog food per kill.

The best dog for catching gophers is a Dachshund. Jack Russell Terriers should be good also. Dachshunds were bred to hunt and kill badgers, which are much larger and meaner than a groundhog. They can hunt wolverine and wild boar too. Not talking about miniature Dachshunds, but the full-size 30-40 lb hunting dachshunds that are like dobermans with short legs and big jaws.

I use humane traps. Then I set them loose in a customer's yard that stiffed me on a bill a few years ago. He has a nice population of possum s, ground hogs, rats ect. I always like to repurpose things. It's sound environmental policy.

I release mice in front of people's houses who have wronged me in some way. It is quite satisfying to watch the little critters happily jumping straight toward their new home.

Use a Hav-a-hart trap and a 5 gallon bucket full of water...once the animal is in the trap, submerge the trap in the bucket..easy-peasy

Fuck that just let them loose somewhere 5 or 10 miles away, but not near crops or a cattle grazing field.

Have your questions ready and translated into gopherese. The subject will not survive for long.

So are illegal central americans, but killing them is illegal. I have a lot more sympathy for the groundhogs. Groundhogs can be a prey animal for foxes, and their burrows can provide shelter for foxes and other animals.

Check me if I'm wrong, but if I kill all the gophers, they're going to lock me up and throw away the key.

In Virginia it is illegal to relocate wildlife of any kind. You must kill them if you trap them. It seems most people drown them in the trap. Groundhogs are a pest animal that can dig under the foundation of your home and cause serious damage. They can also dig tunnels in the yard that you or your kids running around can have a leg fall into and cause a bad injury. There goes your kid's sports activities. Any trick to get them to abandon their dens is only temporary. Even if one groundhog leaves it, another can smell it and will take a perfectly good den over next time. No one would save the lives of termites at their house, groundhogs too don't need to be near and under houses.

It doesn't matter how you TRY to remove them.
When you wake up tomorrow morning, they will still be there.
They got you, babe.

In liberal NoVA, rodents like groundhogs, trannies, jihadists, illegals, rapists, and other liberals have more rights than you.

I caught eight last year with a HavaHart trap and bananas, and cut them loose in the EC Lawrence Park for the coyotes. Just remember to shut the trap down at dusk. I forgot once and caught a skunk.
