Panhandling at Vienna metro
Posted by: Not made of money ()
Date: June 27, 2013 06:57PM

How did Vienna metro become panhandling central? I came out of the station at 5:00 and find one guy selling candy, one musician with an open case for donations, two people holding out cups for money, and a teenage cheerleader or something asking for money for a trip. All were in the same small area. I have also has a guy ask for money for baby food. On the train, there was a woman wobbling through the car as we travelled showing a letter which asked people for money. She actually fell down as the train lurched. Is there no place safe from this stuff? Going to the supermarket there are people, at intersections waiting for you at traffic lights, driving your own car does not stop it!

The gentleman in the wheelchair selling candy is not panhandling. He is selling food. Panhandling is begging for money. If you don't want candy then don't buy it. At least he is trying to make do something with himself in spite of his horrible birth defect. He doesn't beg. It is fee for service.

You need an attitude adjustment.

They show up everywhere. One came up to me in the parking lot at the North Point shopping center in Reston. North Point...not in the South Reston hood. I just tell them to get the fuck away from me...and sort of hope that they don't.

The candy guy is cool...and I hook him up. he is disabled and is offering a service...not asking for a handout.

I NEVER give a dime to someone asking for a handout, whether it's a crakhead in DC or a group of school kids in front of Giant asking for handouts. It's one thing if they are selling a product, but just asking for money? Fuck me...what lessons are we instilling in kids?

If you have a good scar or believable limp, you should be permitted to panhandle.

Everyone else I consider a BEGGAR.

Well if they are at the Metro stop it means a few less people pounding on my door wanting me to buy shit. Metro Center is a gauntlet of beggars and bums. Very aggresive and smelly.

Except what you forgot to mention is the guy selling candy is in a wheel chair and disabled, has a daughter to take care of and he doesn't bother anyone in fact he is a pleasant person. Nor is he begging. Leave him alone.

If true then why isn't he collecting disability, food stamps, welfare, housing assistance and maybe an obamaphone. Its there for the asking. I know some people that live quite well on welfare.

Could it be that some people left in this nation still have pride?

Pride doesnt put food in your mouth or pay the rent. If the guy is truly hurting he needs to cash in on the many programs the government has. Why let the illegals get all the bennies.

The guy in the wheelchair selling candy has been there for years.

Yea gut in the wheelchairs has been there for years but who drives him there? Who buys all the candy.. presumably from Costco or something? Is someone else collecting the money off of him or does he keep it all? Are each one of those packages approved for resale??

I will give change to the truly disabled, as I am somewhat disabled myself.

Anyone else-watch out!

The other day, someone came up and mumbled something about needing milk money.

I brandished my walking stick and said "You address Syrio Forel, First Sword of the Braavosi-it is time for my daily practice-DEFEND YOURSELF!:

Said person ran away quickly. I also did it to a metro hustler, who hastily exited a the next stop.

I wish I had card with Norman Graves' cell phone and big red letters that said "FAIRFAX-WORLD HANDOUT CAPITAL" so they could bother someone else.

No one drives him, he drives himself in his motorized wheelchair. He makes the trip from the Yorkville apartments on Kingsbridge.

I've noticed an uptick in panhandling in Vienna. It is terrible at the Pan Am shopping center. Two older ladies troll the parking lot...one lady approached me with a wrinkled picture of her "husband" in a hospital bed and mumbled that she needed money. I handed her a brochure for a local social service organization while telling her that she needs to be in touch with this group so that she won't have to "beg for money like this."

Scam alert: as I went into Safeway, there was an elderly lady at customer service buying cartons - cartons - of cigarettes. When I finished my shopping, there was the cig buyer trolling the lot and begging. Yeah, real needy!

I did the same for a man who drags his wife and toddler along...same Pan Am parking lot. THIS IS A SCAM! The truly needy are very-well versed in how to get subsistence help; there are food banks, shelters, social services organizations to help with food, clothing and emergency services.

I talk to Ashim all the time. Or try to. I'm embarrassed to say that with even a few years of trying I find it very hard to understand him. But I know that he lives kinda nearby and rides his wheelchair to his spot at Metro. People help him. He is a trusting guy asking people to help get his product out for sale. I believe he has a wife and a couple of kids. He is an example of working hard thru adversity. Whenever I think my life sucks I look up the Candyman and I know I should try harder and stop fucking complaining.

Does the Candyman use a motorized wheelchair? I saw a man in a motorized wheelchair behind the Vienna Metro and he was flying on that thing! I was in my car behind him (couldn't pass/didn't want to) and man, I didn't know those things could go so fast. He was in the narrow roadway...

Approved for re-sale? Highly doubtful...but who is gonna be the jerk that calls him out on it and tells him he can't sell candy anymore?

The one that cracks me up is the new lady on the North side selling water bottles for $1 and candy bars for $2.

I too am a client (and Metrow friend) of the candy man. I stop by, purchase a snack and spend some time with him until the next "metrow friend" arrives. His attitude is inspiring.

Yeah 99% of the people panhandling are scam artists or drug addicts, i didn't realize they had finally found Vienna. I acually have seen the lady at pan am in the past, brushed by her and her two gypsy kids who were eyeing me up. The trick is to completely ignore them and keep your hands in your pockets, because sometimes the scam is they destract you with their story and the other gypsy comes up and snatches your wallet or purse.

There's simply no sure way to tell if they're legitimate. I'd rather fund organizations that provide help to those that need it. Most money given at the metro is like feeding stray cats.

The panhandling is much worse in San Francisco and Seattle. I wonder if the leadership that provides an abundance of public transportation also creates an environment where panhandling is common.

The only way to be left alone is to dress worse than them when going out. Dress normal and get begging. Dress nice and get robbed. Go naked and nobody will steal the seat off of your bicycle.

I have diabetes and I pray that the candyman is there when I got the shakes and never disappoints me, he is also legit and licensed by the county to sell candy and never begs.

He once told me that he would love to work like everybody else and looked for jobs, but no one would hire him with his condition. He also have 3 kids and a wife and by getting up and hitting the metro is a way of teaching his kids the value of work!

it's proximity to circle towers and that fucking merrifield asian "mr moon". they ask for money because they are told by fx co gov there is no work and no money.

HOWEVER. it is all a ploy to use a few pawns to spread the word of poverty - when most democrats are LIVING LARGE using tax money. the wage gap has never been higher and fx co gov is employing all the illegals they can employ using debt

ALL A FACADE to steer the weak minded into thinking democrats are not really doing what they seem to be doing... like building luxury family size condos and populating them with %100 illegals who work for the count: which they are - in spades
