Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I heard that Anhauser-Bush bought Old Dominion Brewing Co. but I figured they would just continue brewing the lager, ale, etc. under the AB brand. I went to Total Wine recently and noticed they didn't have any 12 packs of lager or ale and then the other day at Giant I saw them on sale as a "discontinued" item.
Coastal Brewing Co. is moving operations from its Ashburn, Va., brewery to its plant in Dover.
The brewer of Fordham and Old Dominion beers says operating two breweries 130 miles apart didn't make sense.
Vice President of Sales and Marketing Casey Hollingsworth says the Ashburn brewery is scheduled to close next year. Employees there will be offered jobs in Dover.
The two breweries produce about 30,000 barrels of beer a year.
Hollingsworth says the Dover facility can expand and produce more beer than it currently makes.
Taken from their website:
Coastal Brewing Company has decided to close the Old Dominion Brewpub
in Ashburn, VA, which the company acquired in 2007 with the acquisition of
Virginia-based craft brewer Old Dominion Brewing Company.
The brewpub closing is effective August 25, 2008.
The closing of the brewpub will allow Old Dominion Brewing Company to focus on
its primary objective - producing authentic, high-quality craft beers and sodas.
This decision will have no impact on other operations of Coastal Brewing Company.
Brands under both the Old Dominion and Fordham names will continue
to be distributed and marketed along the east coast of the U.S.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Thank you.

That's a shame they're closing... they were a reliable 'grocery store' brand. There are many superior microbrews than Old Dominion available in Total Wine, though.
Their brewing needs to mature, nothing outstanding in their first offerings. They have started their own hops farm, so maybe there is hope.
The food at the brewpub is abysmal. The food service should be heavily invested in or shut down, as right now it seriously detracts from the "brand" cache that they are trying to establish for their beer.
There is another brewpub set to open just down the road, and much closer to the Wintergreen resort. If that brewpub serves passable food, the prospects for Blue Mountain's brewpub will grow quite dim.

I hate to ruin another beer for you, but Sam Adams isn't actually a brewery started by Samuel Adams. It just uses his name.
