For the DC area, the earliest recorded trace of snowfall was Oct. 5, back in 1892.

But, I've lived here for 14 winters and have never seen snow in October. It usually doesn't even snow in November (although I think it did a little last year). Usually the "bulk" of our snowy weather comes in Jan-Feb, and it's usually pretty tame compared with other parts of the country.

Blah, I hate even thinkng about it...

It seems like we usually get our first snowfall around December 5th. You'll probably see a few flakes in November. But the good stuff comes in January and February (if we even get anything). We average about 23" out here in western Fairfax. I'm in Harrisonburg now, so hopefully I'll get more snow than you guys!

Snow is an expensive habit. You need to clean yourself up dude.

We had about a foot of snow on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) 1987. That's the heaviest snow I can recall in November. We have now had seven or eight mild winters in a row and a due for a bad one, I should think.

wow it really has been eight years since that last bad one (winter of 1999-2000 iirc), and even that winter wasn't out of control.

Those two winters in 94 and 96 were how I define BAD weather for this area. I recall we missed school for almost two weeks straight in 94 and had to make it up at the end of the year by adding hours onto each day. Sucked.

Judging by the number of deadsquirrels littering the roadsides lately, I'd say winter and snow is coming soon.

We don't get snow around here and when it does, people get all over-dramatic about it. It then melts 24hrs later anyways.

Back in 2004 or 2005 we got about 1 inch about 3 days before Thanksgiving. It took forever to melt, and it was a VERY cold Turkey Day holiday.

Usually DC likes to get the snows later in the winter instead of earlier. It can snow anytime from October to May but you probably won't see any snow in the area usually until Jan and Feb. Seldom snows in November but they've been belted before. Look at the past history of storms of DC and you'll get your answer. I believe the poster that said DEC 5 for average first snowfalls, is probably the closest to being correct from what I've heard.
