Doing a little search here.

If you are self employed, buying your own insurance - who would you recommend?

Be careful. There's a group called the National Association for the Self Employed, that apparently only sells people insurance from a company called Mega. Mega insurance is different from a lot of other types of insurance, and some people say they were cheated and it doesn't really pay for stuff. There have been lawsuits I think, and also people have accused the NASE of just being a front for Mega. I don't know the details myself, but it's something to look into before going with that.

I have Anthem but I haven't used it much. I was also recommended another company that started with the letter A, Aetna I think.

I see ads now and then for Kaiser individual plans and the rates didn't look too bad.

I pay for individual insurance with Kaiser and I'm very happy. It was about $275.00 a month 6 years ago. As I've gotten older (I'm 43) it has gone up to $375.00. But I only have $10 co-pay for visits and prescriptions. I had surgery a couple of years ago and I had to pay $500.00 co-pay. I was with Kaiser before on my ex-husbands insurance, so I've been going to them for 18 years.

I went through this process a couple of years ago. Individual insurance sucks. It is hard to get a decent policy that doesn't cost a fortune. I was turned down by several groups, including Kaiser, even though I didn't have any pre-existing conditions.

What I ended up doing was incorporating as an S-Corp. I then hired my wife as an employee. I claimed one kid as a dependent, she claimed the other. We were able to get Anthem to insure us as a group policy.

Mega-Life, etc, are all scams. They don't cover anything.

Speaking of NASE, I had one of their reps visit the house one time. The guy looked like he escaped from a 1980s movie. He had the mullet and knit tie (this was in 2002). I took one look at him and said, "no thanks."

Try Aetna...They have a range of policies and the flexibility of choosing the doctors/practices that you can go to (unlike Kaiser).I believe they are price comparable if not better then Kaiser.

Aetna Link for a quote:

For tax savings look into a Health Savings Account/Flexible Spending Account which can help with out-of-pocket expenses. i.e. co-pay, prescriptions, eye doctors/dentists etc.

What do you folks think of Kaiser Permanente compared to regular PPO plans? Is it hard to locate doctors and stuff?

HSAs are a crock. If you have an extra $2K laying around, you can stick it in the HSA for a tax savings. Do you have an extra $2K lying around?
