People who flash headlights to warn of a speed trap.

Flashing lights to warn other drivers about speed enforcement is illegal and stupid. Our tax dollars are paying for these officers to protect our community and some of you assholes out there think that making it harder for a cop to give out tickets is a good thing. Our cops need to write more tickets not less. There is so much shitty driving going on out there that we need to fine as many drivers as the court system can stand.

To all you light flashers out there I would like say FUCK YOU!

Oh Please toe jam driver, you know you would be the first one to say "thank you" to the person who tipped you off about a speed trap. I will continue to warn my fellow driver of impending doom.

I have a feeling you are one of those people that have a bible in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other with a whole lot of sin in between.

A special thanks to the People who flash headlights to warn of a speed trap. You've saved me from many a ticket. Also big thanks to the police for all the fine work they do. I love reading stories where you solve crimes. (Most recently being that group of three redneck burglars in McLean). Keep up the good work!

Not illegal. Covered under free speach. Dumb ass cops may however tell you that it is illegal.

Its illegal in most states, they actually have laws against it. I call that being a "Spoils sport" law. LOL

It's not illegal in VA. Yet, I was ticketed for it two years ago. On the citation the officer cited the statute prohibiting emergency flashing lights on cars. I challeneged it.

When I arrived in Court there were three other drivers there making the same challenge. The officer came over and said he was going to ask the judge to dismiss the citations and she did. My sense was he was taking a shot - probably cited many other drivers who just paid the ticket but those that challeneged were going to get off anyway because there is no statute prohibiting it.

Several states have thrown out statutes on this on free speech grounds. Plus a driver flashing lights could be signaling other drivers that you are going to pass, or reminding them to turn on their lights so it's hard to enforce.

I'm all for keeping our roads safe, but ticketing for non-wreckless driving (say, keeping up with traffic on the parkway) is just wrong. They are out there to make money, not to keep our roads safe.

speed traps have been proven to do nothing to reduce speeding. It's used merely as a revenue maker for the county, state, etc.

You probably agree with stop light cameras too, eh?

What is the purpose of speed enforcement....to slow people down, not generate revenue for the state. What difference does it make (if safety is the real concern) whether some one else alerts someone to a speed trap or if they fall into it?

Besides, it's not illegal.

The police want people to avoid flashing lights at oncoming cars for their own good.

From the latest Weekly Bulletin from the Fairfax County Police Department:

"If you are driving after dark and see an on-coming car with no headlights on, DO NOT FLASH YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM! This is a common Bloods gang member "initiation game" that goes like this:

The new gang member under initiation drives along with no headlights, and the first car to flash their headlights at him is now his "target". He is now required to turn around and chase that car, then shoot and kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his initiation requirements.

Motorists are also advised not to flash lights to warn other drivers of police checkpoints due to the fact that gang members may mistake this action for a challenge.

FCPD will be passing along this advice about police checkpoints to community listservs this week.

How convenient...for them.

It's so widespread and dangerous, that the local news isn't covering it.

i always flash my lights to warn people about cops/speed traps. unfortunately, there are so many of them my hi-beams just stay turned on all of the time.

a couple of other lost courtesies on the road:

flashing your lights once to let a passing semi know they have fully passed you and are free to get over if they want

flashing your lights once to give a car/semi the go ahead to merge into your lane

flashing your lights and/or taillights once to say "thank you" for a semi that does the same for you in return

Flashing to warn of a speed trap is a public service. A civic duty, even. And not illegal. Regarding the story above about an officer 'taking a shot', the officer should have been punished for wasting the court's time.

Too bad there isn't a way to warn drivers behind you -- but brake lights are helpful; when you're on a highway and suddenly a bunch of cars up ahead brake for seemingly no reason, there's probably a cop hiding out so pay attention.

Isn't a driver flashing their lights to warn of a speed trap actually serving the same purpose as the speed trap itself? If the purpose of the speed trap is to slow drivers down (yeah, yeah, I know - it's to make money) then doesn't warning drivers to slow down by flashing your lights accomplish the same thing?

I don't know if any court in Virginia has ever addressed it, but one in Florida has; I believe New Jersey has as well.

You are a moron who clearly does not understand what "shitty driving" really is. Most of the people who get caught are not bad drivers, most of the "shitty drivers" are the ones who DON'T get caught.

Let me ask you, do you always drive UNDER the speed limit???? DO YOU? I'm betting you don't so shut your mouth.

Yeah, you're right...I shouldn't flash my headlights on GW Parkway because a car in incoming traffic on the OTHER SIDE OF THE FUCKING MEDIUM may think it's a gang sign to fight.

So then, outside of the states in which the courts have decided this behavior constitutes free speech, flashing headlights to warn of speed traps might still be illegal, right?

Also, do the laws in Virginia even specifically address flashing headlights for this purpose?

My Neighborhood has a hill as you leave it to get on the main road. The speed limit is 25. By the time you start down the hill, unless you are riding the brake pretty heavily you will ALWAYS be doing at least 30 to 35. There is nothing at the bottom of the hill other than the intersection to get on the main road. Guess where the cops like to set up shop? Did I mention that there is an elementary school just 1/2 mile before you get to the hill. Do you think the cops setup there - NO. This is simply a way for them to make money.

Have lots of respect for law enforcement, and I know times are tough for all government agencies. BUT I don't go for speed traps making up the shortfall.

If they were really serious about getting people to slow down then the penalties would not be monetary, but jail time. It's just a shake down. Look at how much DC brings in with just their cameras.

If they were REALLY serious, they would do what they do in a Scandinavian country (the name escapes me). They issue you a ticket based on a fixed percentage of your income.

That way, rich people who spend more daily lunch than the amount of a normal ticket, actually pay attention and slow down. Everyone is punished proportionally to their income, so it affects rich and poor alike.

+1

The goal, police claim, is to get people to slow down, not to raise revenue via ticket fines.

When you warn someone, you are achieving that goal.

Therefore police should be encouraging this practice, not discouraging it.

There is a detailed and interesting (although possibly out of date) discussion of the issue here:

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/114333/page-2.html

It appears that everyone who challenged a ticket they received for a flashing-light-warning had the ticket dismissed.

Interestingly, the police asked the guy who started the old thread to stop posting about it on Fairfax Underground, probably so that Fairfax drivers would remain ignorant that (1) it's legal to flash your headlights to warn others of a speed trap, and (2) it's illegal to ticket drivers who do this.

They want to ticket you to pay for all of Bulova and Dale's crap. Props to the light flashers. Let the county learn to handle money properly.

It is proper etiquette to the other drivers to warn of a speed trap. I do this every occasion there is a speed trap. Anyone who does not believe in doing this should learn that it makes the community better. One quick flash can save someone over $100!

It's totally serious. Our community listserv featured this county bulletin a couple of weeks ago.

Another officer who is frustrated that he can't get speeders in his trap because everybody in Fairfax county is warning other drivers by flashing their lights.

www.trapster.com/

Alot of people I know now use Trapster which is a perfectly legal speed trap and checkpoint sharing software for cellphones. It can also warn you when are getting in frequent speed trap areas.

You can also checkout some GPS's that will give "Speed alert zone" warning.

My house is very close to a road where asshole motorcycle cops and undercover units hide between the parked cars and sidewalks to attempt to ticket anyone passing, who happens to be slightly speeding, etc., kind of like a bridge troll.

I feel it as my duty to warn all traffic of the upcoming pigs by flashing by lights, and everyone waves back to me. Hell, a lot of the people driving past that I warn are my neighbors or someone else I recognize, and it saves them from a ticket.

I love how people are mad at the ''pigs''...but when there is a fatal accident like the one on dranesville road a couple years back, everyone wines that the ''pigs'' dont do speed enforcement in that area. I bet if the previous poster's daughter was hit by a speeding car while on her bike in his neighborhood he would be singing a different tune.

are you really that ignorant?
"bloods gang initiation,"
what a hoot.

that is a crock of shite. if your fairfax county extortionist thugs weren't so busy writing tickets to stuff their coffers they might be available to curb the rampant gang murders that have paralyzed fairfax county. please remove your head from your arsehole. when was the last time a car full of innocent passersby was brutally slaughtered? please cite one example from anywhere in the country. it has never happened. that is why the real organized crime "enforcers" (cops) have time and leisure to hide in bushes and "trap" average taxpaying commuters.

You dumbazz. Urban legend. You probably have given your bank account number to a Nigerian Prince, passed on the email about the "abandoned" baby in the middle of the highway that lures a sympathetic driver to their certain death and also believe that Obama is requiring that all American's get a microchip implanted as part of Obamacare.

+1

Of course it's protected speech. I'm not going to name names, but certain crooked, idiotic politicians would just LOVE to make changes to the amendment.

Obviously I can't go into details but I came up with an electronic system that prevents pigs from getting an accurate speed reading and it affects some of their other electronics.

It's your hard-earned money, folks. Don't let the government rob you blind!

I don't want to anger any gang members and have them follow me home to shoot me or my family.

I tell my wife and children never to flash their headlights if the see a cop, checkpoint or a speed trap on the road. The gang members may be nearby just waiting for someone to do it.

Just slow down and don't drink and drive and you'll be okay.
