Illegal left turn ticket in SEVEN CORNERS

I got a ticket today making a left turn illegally at 7 croners,. I was coming from route 7 to go to route 50, and was in the second lane over, adn they told me it was illegal. I have been here for 4 years and never KNEW that was illegal, it is VERY unclear, and I know everyone does it. I think it's unfair that a cop stand at that corner and give everyone tickets for the same reason when it is UNCLEAR, and VERY confusing. Supposedly, the first(most left) lane is the only one that can turn left and go straight there, but then they would be crossing over a dotted line to go straight, and no one would do that. So that is why the 2nd left lane over seems more like a straight OR turn left lane, not the first one. Everyone just goes two lanes there adn then fuses as one when they go into the single road ahead. Is there any defense there? Should i pay the ticket or go to court. I am writing a letter about this anyway, it is unfair and CONFUSING. THANK YOU!

I am SURE that was confusing to understand, but in general, the real question is...IT'S SO CONFUSING IN THERE! Whther make it clearer or don't sit there and stick all the confused people make mistakes. I follow the rules, and I wouldn't just break the rule on purpose, and I think it's unfair that if i didn't even SEE that that was illegal for so long, they give the ticket.

You were clearly in the wrong. In fact your type of driving has caused accidents. I know exactly where you are talking about and have almost been hit by people in that second lane trying to go left. I drive that route regulary and in the far left lane, you can actually go straight down hillwood or turn left to get onto 50. When you are in the second lane, that is to go straight only. Perhaps a warning was in order, but the lane configurations are not as confusing as you claim.

Tricolini,

You will get a lot of snark from the posters here. Go back to the intersection and document EVERYTHING. Take pictures of the turn lanes, the signs, etc. Then goto your court date and FIGHT THE CHARGE!

If you win the county will be so angry that they'll have to make it more clear.

Fairfax hates losing court cases.

The whole seven corners bowl is just a confusing mess, where you are in a lane, but not sure if it connects to where you are trying to get to. I avoid it as much as I can. I mean it makes no sense that a guided line is guiding you to turn, but you CAN cross over it and go straight? But the line seems to be guiding that second row of cars to go straight OR turn. It's pretty black and white AS you drive the turn, but apparently the signs that are BEFORE say different, but by the time you are moving, you are not sure what lane was for which.

Thank you for the response "honest answer", all though obviously there were some unneeded comments by people who are not sympathetic nor nice.
