The Herndon Bum
Posted by: ILOG5047 ()
Date: September 08, 2008 01:51PM

OK Everyone...

This is the official thread to discuss the Herndon bum. The Herndon bum can be found 24/7/365, wandering up and down Centreville Road. His normal route is to go up to Metrotech Drive (near rt. 50) and then back down the road, normally till about the WorldGate shopping center.

I have worked in Herndon for about 5 years and I see him normally once a week or more -- most commonly spotted near or around the McLauren Shopping Center.

The dude is a mess. What a bum. He looks scary as fuck too.

Again this will be the offical thread to discuss, monitor, and analyze the Herndon bum.

i see him all the time in the Bloom on McLaren and Centreville Road. I usually see him around 11am. When he leaves he just walks on the side of centreville road towards worldgate.

He is looking shaggy as hell as of late...

The bum grew out his facial hair. I have seen him many times this summer near the clocktower toll road entrance staggering around. He walks under the toll road on Centreville Rd. (not on the sidewalk side) and everyone almost hits him.

He has a nice tan going. I will photograph him soon to share with everyone.

Dude...even I wouldn't walk with this guy...

He is seriously scary looking. You'll see when I post the picture. I think I should be able to get one within the work week. I see him like once every couple days.

if I can snap a pic, we'll create a wiki entry for the Herndon Bum imo...

Thanks Bumstead!!!!!1 What else can you tell us about the Herndon Bum???

Any additional information would be great. thanks!!!!!

Please continue to update this thread!

But in all seriousness, folks, lets track his cordinates and his daily progress. If anyone can catch the Herndon Bum on photo before I do, please share. Also, Bumstead, hows about sharing more info on bumstead....you live around there? Is Ian the only one back there, or, are there more homeless?

Awakened, what is this place you're talking about? What can you tell us about Ian(?). Was he good at the guitar? What kind of music was he in to? Anything else you can recall?

This is where he lives, you can ask the residents in the townhomes that border the woods.

Why is everyone so happy about getting a picture? Who cares, he looks like any other homeless person who wonders the streets. Although he never begs.

And no, silly EJ Greyberg, I don't live near there. I live in the WP Style section, in a nice neighborhood, in a nice home with my lovely bride, Blondie, my 2 kids, Cookie and Alexander, and a nice refrigerator filled with deli meat. However, I wish that ditz, Jughead, next door, would mow his lawn.

Clearly this bum is a Republican.

He might have wandered from his home. If you find him, please return him to 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Cheers.

Let's put a GPS tracking collar on him. We can track the migrations of the elusive albino bumus caucazoidus instead of the more common light brown bumus borderjumpus or dark brown bumus homiecrackus species.

This will be the offical thread to discuss, monitor, and analyze the Herndon loser, ILOG5047, who wants to discuss and comment on a guy who obviously needs help, but instead just wants to belittle him and find some excuse not to help him.

Did you ever stop to think that this guy could be a veteran of our Armed Forces? He might even be a veteran of the Iraq or Afghanistan wars.

ILOG5047, if you actually gave a shit about this guy, other than for your own amusement, you would either attempt to engage him in a conversation to find out what his deal is, or you would call Fairfax County Social Services and ask them to attempt to provide aid for him, like mental counseling, or job placement, or housing assistance.

You do have a conscience, don't you? This isn't some wild animal that is neat to spot on the way to work, this a son of some father, a human being, a guy that obviously fucked up or got fucked up and is barely hanging on by a thread.

We can all laugh, he's just this loser, and he's all over the place, and he's homeless.

Anyone who commented on this thread and didn't try to help the guy is a loser and hopes to feel superior by making negative comments. None of those assholes proposed the idea of getting this lost soul, who might even be a veteran of the Iraq war, or some other war, some help. There's a reason he's out there. Maybe it is drug abuse, or alcoholism, and it might possibly be PTSD.

Laugh at this guy all you want, but if you do, you are more of a loser than he is, because you have no ability to empathize with your fellow man.

You probably just moved to the DC area in the last few years, and came from some small town in Iowa or Kansas or whatever, so you think it's funny to laugh at homeless people. I've lived here for over 28 years, and I've worked downtown for over 18 years. I see homeless people every day. Some are just your run of the mill drug addict, but many more are burned out, psychologically damaged veterans who cannot or will not take advantage of the VA services, as screwed up as the VA is. I've even talked to homeless guys panhandling at 18th and H, in wheelchairs, and told them that right around the corner, on 18th street, the headquarters of the PVA (paralyzed veterans association) could give them a job, a home and counseling.

You have to talk to people before you can judge them. I would hope you knew that from whatever college your family scrimped and saved in order to send you to, to be the first from your family with a college education.

I think you'll feel much more superior once you kill that dirty human being.

Trust me, your entire existence will prove to be superior once you know that you murdered someone. Funny guy.

To the left, behind the orange fenceline is where the Bowman's store used to be. It was constructed in 1895, and demolished about 2 months ago.

1930s vs. 2004

1930s vs. TODAY

The "today" photo is from a much more accurate angle than the "2004" one, just in case you're wondering.

Bob - agree with your sentiments re compassion and recognizing that there's people who fall for any number of reasons.

But I am always perplexed by social work. Our good buddies at the ACLU make it virtually impossible to commit truly troubled people to institutions that at least in theory can help or provide maintenance. So what does the profession do when there are people who simply are not capable of accepting help? At some point utopianism collides fairly hard with reality.

I have worked in Herndon for a while and always wondered about him. I thought maybe he lived with a parent and was mentally ill. I always thought he looked scary, but one day he was out on the benches in front of Food Lion and asked me for money and sounded really meek, the complete opposite of how he had come off before. I felt really bad for him.
