I didn't get into TJ, can I get a refund from my tutors?

I feel I let me parents down. But I'll get over it. God knows how many tens of thousands of dollars they spent on tutors the past six years. I wish now they had just saved it for my regular (i.e. not MIT) university, or maybe a new car.

My 3-job mother and father grinding away and really lame vacations. They paid 35, 45 even 60 per hour for tutors for me.

The best thing they did was ditch the old math tutor and use the new Indian online math tutors. That was almost nothing in cost compared to the old-guy teachers we had to drive to. It's tcyonline.com, open 24/7 and as many lessons as you want for $149 a month. With tcy I write on a whiteboard app live with my tutor anytime I want from my room and talk over a headset. It's cool. I like being able to get homework help at 11pm. God bless globalization!

Can I get a refund from my old tutor? I wish I had the 1000s of $ my parents paid.

Zia (not going to M.I.T. but I still love myself!)

Yes, maybe we can outsource our public schools to India. Is that possible? Home school is possible, why not do from India. I buy my cat food from Walmart because its 2 cents cheaper per can than Target. If math tutoring is 1/10 less expensive from India, that's even simplier decision.

By the way, as soon as the TATA, that $2,500 car from India, comes to America, I'm buying one.

Kim.

The Tata? If you drive one of those you'll need good medical insurance. It's so small. But you're right, it'll sell like hotcakes... come to think of it, I don't know where to buy hotcakes, you can't call that stuff at IHOP hotcakes.

Let's open a TATA dealership on Fairfax's auto row.

I don't know about math tutoring. I got through Algebra2, it was hard. Maybe a tutor would have helped. I've got nuthin against Indians. They've got nuclear bobms, we have to nice to them. I think they're pretty good at math, too. I like em cuz they don't smoke hookas and their art is kinda of naughty.

Why didn't you get into TJ? Was it based upon your math scores? Your ethnicity? Or something else? With changes being made to TJ admissions, you may be judged under new criteria. I understand that TJ is receiving pressure to accept more blacks and Hispanic students that normally wouldn't qualify. Is there any chance you were caught up in some such program and there simply weren't enough spaces available?

Citizen,

It wasn't due to race. TJ is very competitive. A lot of families spend years to prep their kids for it. You've seen the bumper stickers, "My kid goes to TJ -he's smarter than yours" or some subtext like that. I was lamenting the thousands of dollars my parents spent on private tutors. Is it really worth it for most families?
I'm smart enough to get into VT in a few years without them I'm pretty sure. But now I'm glad the Indian service makes it affordable for my parents without giving all our spare cash to my math tutor. My parents can afford it. I get to stay at home instead of driving to the library. I might get into MIT afterall.

You have no clue, clearly. Work hard, you can get into MIT through a normal school too. And you go to an FCPS school, so it's even better.

You can always go to Oakton. It is the best school in Fairfax County.

If TJ is supposed to have all the smartest kids, why would they need tutors in middle school? I never needed a tutor.

I tried tcyonline and still use it. Ad or no ad, i can't tell but it was same for me, all the tutoring sessions I can schedule anytime and one price. Works good and it got me into AP classes. I hope to graduate college in 3.5 years. Who needs tutoring? I'm smart and I use it. It'll save me a year of college and my life.

Don't give up, Zia. South Lakes will take you and it's a far better school anyway.

And yes, I'll have fries with that.

I can see it now, "A Tale of Two Tutors"
Chapter 1:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Mr. Smyth, a retired Fairfax County school teacher, has been counting on the $50 per hour he made tutoring math to pay for his rapiding rising Adjustable Rate Mortgage. Now, before he knew what had happened, he found himself living on a bench in Riverside Park tutoring for scraps of food. Meanwhile, in Bangalore,India, Suddakarthakumontha was living large, driving a new TATA and helping Zia get into MIT."

It seems very foolish to pay so much for tutorials. TJ seeks out the high native intelligence and not just one or two tests. If you are a smart student and a dedicated student, you shouldn't have to seek tutoring for TJ. You either have it or you don't. My child, for example, was identified in elementary school by the Johns Hopkins talent search program. Subsequently, however, the child declined TJ acceptance and went directly to college. Yes, it can be done. Remember, also, that TJ is not retaining the B and C level students, even with A's in sports and art. If you're naturally bright and like to learn, you don't need tutorial work to get into TJ.

In some ways it can be a disadvantage to go to TJ. If your child is smart and motivated he/she can excel within the FCPS environment. he/she doesn't have to go to TJ inorder to get into a good college or university. There is great competition among TJ students and that can be disheartening to some.

getting into vt is a joke. I hate how people think they're the shit for going to vt. Try getting into UVA if you're so smart.
