Cicadas - Don't Believe the Hype
Posted by: Jesse James ()
Date: May 13, 2013 07:31PM

I've lived in this area my entire life. My first experience with the Cicadas was in 1987 (Brood X). This brood returned in 2004 and is not scheduled to return again until 2021.

The brood that the local media has been obsessed with is Brood II. It will barely impact our region. (See map below).

So why do you think the local media is obsessing over this?

There must of been about 200 in my yard and the noise of so loud I can barely sleep. I went to Home Depot and bought some bug killer but it's not working.

My parents live in Manassas closer to Lake Jackson area and its disgusting how many they have. They're all over the driveway, the house, absolutely everywhere.

I live in Fairfax (Chantilly) and I haven't seen a single one.

The media has to obsess over something. The big difference between this invasion and the last one in 1997 is we now have soical media and a gazillion cameras in the hands of morons who will be posting stupid Cicada pictures everywhere. Ive already seen a few.

Most of Chantilly is isnt 17 years old. The construction destroyed Brood II. Same thing with the 2k7(?) emergence. Didn't see many.

I doubt we will see many, and certainly not what older areas will/are getting.

I guess I should qualify. We won't see many as soon as other places. I am sure some will migrate, but I doubt we'll be innundated. Didn't see any closer than route 28 at 66 last go around about 7/8 years ago.

Cicadas Emerge in DC Area
See the bugs on your sidewalk? In your yard? Hanging from your dog's mouth? Check out our photos and post your own pics!
http://mclean.patch.com/articles/cicada-2013-share-your-pictures-c32c951a#photo-14494919

Get that camera phone ready for something gross and (maybe) delicious.

The first cicadas — and their empty, crunchy shells — have officially arrived in the DC metro area and Northern Vriginia for the 2013 season.

•See: 2013 Cicada 'Swarmageddon' video here...
Some areas to the north and east have yet to exerpience the “Cicadapocalypse," but residents have reported seeing several in this area.

Share your cicada photos with us by clicking on the 'upload' button above!

Known as the East Coast II brood, these cicadas will emerge between April and June, across North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and several other states up through Connecticut. The result? A 7 kHz buzz could fill the region as the cicadas try to attract mates.

If they behave typically, the cicadas will be around for four to six weeks. According to the Nature Conservancy, birds and other wildlife will have an ample source of food this year. In addition, the pruning of some trees that these insects do is actually good for local forests.

What do you call the mental illness that makes you repeatedly post political statements in a non-political thread with the same, tiresome crap? Literally one second after everyone reads that garbage, it's forgotten. Dude, nobody thinks you're witty or funny. Actually, I bet they think you're a sad, bitter loser. At least I do.

Oh yeah, no cicadas here in Centreville.

If any neighboord has been developed in the last 17 years, it would have very few cicadas because they would have been bulldozed in the building process. The don't burrow very deep. If your neighborhood was built in the several years before that, you still might not have many due to the lack of trees 17 years ago. They like to climb up trees before mating.

See that's the thing... my neighborhood was build over 30 years ago. But besides my neighborhood, I walk all over Burke, from Lake Royal to Coffer Woods, Burke Lake Road, etc, areas that have been wooded for quite a while, and still have not seen more that 1 so far.

My personal experience with this brood is that in the area where I live near Centreville they are not widespread, but there seem to be some noisy pockets of them. Walking along the Cub Run trail just west of Chantilly Nat'l GCC they were making one hell of a racket today about 4 pm, especially at the confluences of Elk Lick Run and Flat Lick Branch with Cub Run (I guess the water could have been reflecting and amplifying the sound). But walk back into the neighborhood and nary a one was chirping. There was much more noise in the neighborhood from the birds, especially mockingbirds (there is a mockingbird in full song outside my window right now).

I'm in the same area and have only seen a few, and heard a few, maybe one or two each time I go to my car. They are very underwhelming. Nothing at all compared to 1987 and 2004.

I have yet to see any in my neighorhood nor in the vicinity. As was mentioned before, they seem to be out in the Newington area and in areas at and below Braddock Road. That would put their boundaries at around south of Braddock Road and along I-95, which fits nicely into the map that was provided earlier about the general location of cicada broods.

2013 Brood II Cicada Invasion: Have You Seen Any?
If you haven't seen any cicadas in your neighborhood by now, you may not see any this summer.
http://chantilly.patch.com/articles/2013-brood-ii-cicada-invasion-have-you-seen-any-ffd31d0c

If you haven’t seen a swarm of cicadas in your neighborhood already, you may not see very many—or any—of the bugs this summer.

The 17-year Brood II cicadas, which were expected to blanket the East Coast from North Carolina through New England, are very prevalent in some areas but not others.

Cicadas start to emerge when soil temperatures hit the mid-60s, and soil temperatures in most parts of Fairfax County have been well into that range for some time now.

In Burke, Lorton, Centreville, Prince William County and elsewhere, residents have reported seeing dozens of cicadas on trees, in the grass and in the air. Reports of cicada invasions are also coming in from New Jersey, Delaware and elsewhere to the northeast.

There are lighter, spotty reports of seeing cicadas in the Alexandria part of Fairfax County.

•See: 2013 Cicada 'Swarmageddon' in Virginia: What We Could See Here
However, the Capital Weather Gang reports that recent Brood II cicada maps show the infestation “stops just south of the Capital Beltway” except for some isolated pockets.

Yes, even bugs are trying to avoid the Beltway.

“If you have not yet seen cicadas where you live, there is a good chance that Brood II has missed your area,” wrote CWG’s Kevin Ambrose. “Don’t worry, Brood X will probably get you in 2021.”

In early May, Joan Martinez Allen, Urban Forester II with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, said, “Fairfax County is on the border of where this year’s 17-year emergence will occur. … Their presence will be spotty.”

Where to See Cicadas

If you haven’t seen any cicadas in your neighborhood and you want to see a real invasion, head south and west: Go down I-95 into Prince William County just south of the Occoquan River. Or go toward the battlefields in Manassas.

Tell us: Have you seen any cicadas in your neighborhood, or have you heard their clicky song? Let us know in the comments.

Homeowners can protect younger trees from too many cicadas with cheesecloth or mosquito netting.Credit Bertie Dame
