Signs of Costco Building Going Up at Site on Richmond Highway
The store is hiring and looking to open this summer.

The first signs of the warehouse building for the soon-to-be brand new Costco are peeking up behind the draped fencing surrounding the large construction site off of Richmond Highway.

An employee at the Pentagon Costco told Patch recently the store will open on Aug. 8 and the Costco Web site is advertising for job openings for the Costco Richmond Highway store.

While you're waiting for Costco to open, here are some details about the popular warehouse membership club store:

Popular items with Costco buyers

Items that fly off the shelves, according to this article by CBS News Moneywatch:

Wine: Fancy wines at low prices are uber-popular at Costco and you can keep up with all things vino at the Costco wine blog: http://costcowineblog.com/

Other "must-have" deals at Costco: Chocolate truffles, eyeglasses, laptops and extra virgin olive oil.

More Costco fun facts:

The store buys half the world's supply of "the most popular kind" of cashews and each year sells 100 million of its popular hot dog-and-soda combo for $1.50. (Costco lore says the price hasn't changed since the store opened its first store in 1983.)

Yep, that COSTCO is being built in the heart of shithole Rt. 1. Janna Lee apartments to one side and across the street is Gum Springs. I see that COSTCO is going to be fucked up!!!!

Is this at the site of the old Multiplex?

This should be an interesting mix of people. Sherwood Hall provides a direct line for the wealthy that live in Hollin Hills and along the Parkway. While the store itself is in jaywalking and stolen bike-riding distance from a trailer park and the highest concentration of barrios in the region.

I hope this Costco invests heavily in parking lot security.

It'll be okay. Costcos in bad 'hoods have machine gun nests on the roof.

Road Improvements Coming to New Costco Intersection
The company is paying for the new features, according to county.
http://mountvernon.patch.com/articles/road-improvements-coming-to-new-costco-intersection

Costco Wholesale, set to open in 2013, will make a number of transportation and transit improvements at its new location on Richmond Highway.

Since the new business was announced, some local residents have feared more congestion will surround the Richmond Highway/Ladson Lane intersection to the southeast of the Costco property. Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay said while some drivers may remain frustrated, Costco’s improvements are better than the alternative.

“I’m glad we’re getting some improvements to this, in that, without Costco, we probably never would have gotten,” he said.

McKay added: “Obviously, there’s going to be more traffic in the area, but one of the things I think people often forget was, it was not a Costco or nothing. The choice was a Costco, going through a public hearing, getting transportation improvements—or a larger shopping center that could have been built there by-right … with no transportation improvements.”

Two main entrances will serve the Costco. One access point will face Ladson Lane, while the other will be located off of Richmond Highway. The Richmond Highway entrance will provide only for right turns onto the property from southbound highway lanes and right turns off of the property onto southbound Richmond Highway, said Marcus Wadsworth, staff assistant to McKay.

All Costco parking will be free, he said.

Also, at all intersections and entrances at the site, drivers will be able to see opposing traffic through clear lines of sight, unobscured by landscaping.

Costco is paying for all the improvements, Wadsworth said. Other improvements include:

•Bike racks, likely on Costco’s property near the store entrances
•The construction and maintenance of a foot trail fronting Richmond Highway between the Walmart property and Ladson Lane
•A bus shelter pad and pedestrian trail connection near the intersection of Richmond Highway and Ladson Lane
•A 67-foot right-of-way dedication, which gives land to the county, and a 21-foot right-of-way reservation, which means giving the county the right to ask for that land in the future, from Costco’s property fronting Richmond Highway
•A right-turn lane from Richmond Highway onto Ladson Lane
•Dual left-turn lanes from northbound Richmond Highway into the Walmart entrance at the intersection with Sherwood Hall Lane
•An analysis or re-timing of local traffic signals, if required per individual analysis
•And an evaluation of a proposed U-turn lane on southbound Richmond Highway
Costco has maintained the development would not have a “significantly higher impact than an operational movie theater located on the same site."

In its traffic-impact analysis submitted to the Fairfax County Planning Commission, Costco analysts predicted that 737 new peak-hour trips on Saturday and 4,496 new daily trips on weekdays would occur after completion of the store. According to VDOT, Richmond Highway handles about 60,000 vehicles per day.

I wondered when that site would get rebuilt. Yes, I watched that multiplex's progress in the 80s and 90s. It was a filthy pit the last time I went there. (early 90s?)

I'm not sure how to fix a blighted area like that. I'm not sure that expanding asphalt and further increasing human density and auto traffic are the right fixes.

We've had numerous internal job postings listed in warehouses throughout the area, since we need knowledgeable employees at the new location. But word is going 'round that we don't have enough exprienced personell transferring. No one wants to work at what will clearly be the shittiest Costco in NoVA.

Will this one have a gas station?

If so, good luck to anybody traveling along that stretch of highway that needs to get anywhere fast.

No. I wish I had been though. I moved here in '86, just after the Multiplex was built.
