Vienna metro station gadget

This device has been at the entrance of the Vienna metro station for a few months. Does anyone have any idea what it is? It is plugged in and seems to just sit there.

Air sampler. They're in a quite a few Metro stations. They showed up not long after 9-11.

Yup, that's what I thought though Google Image Search (by image) didn't turn up anything interesting UNTIL I used your words "air sampler" as an additional search "term" with the image:

Thanks. I was thinking it might be something like that. But I was thrown off by the fact that it plugs into a standard outlet. Anyone could unplug it.
