This new as of about 10 am, I used WTOP about 8 this morning.

I'm not surprised, I got a ransomware attack the day before yesterday. I cleaned it off yesterday and I'm scanning again to be safe.

Have emailed one of their employees whose email I have in case it's fake.

They still have that message up. I didn't have any issues with any viruses or malware yesterday. I'm curious to learn about this and who's responsible for hacking their site.

WTOP, Federal News Radio sites hit with cyberattack
The Washington Post Published: May 7
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/wtop-federal-news-radio-sites-hit-with-cyberattack/2013/05/07/81cb5752-b73b-11e2-b94c-b684dda07add_story.html

The Web sites of local radio stations WTOP and Federal News Radio were hacked this week, potentially infecting the computers of people who visited their Web site within the past two days.

A statement posted on WTOP’s Web site Tuesday said that users who visited its page using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser may have been affected by the attack. The statement said that visitors using other browsers, including Safari or Firefox, were not affected.

Adobe’s subscription model and the future of software

Adobe will release a subscription service for its most popular programs, falling in line with a software trend.

.“WTOP.com is currently dealing with a malicious cyber attack,” the statement said. “We are working diligently to contain and stop the attack, and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.”

John Meyer, director of digital media for both stations, said the virus affected some people who visited the site using Internet Explorer. To prevent the attack from spreading, the radio stations blocked those users from accessing the stations’ Web sites and linked to a statement explaining the attack.

WTOP and Federal News radio did not say how many people were affected or when the hack was detected.

Eddie Mitchell, a security engineer at the Fairfax-based security company Invincea, said hacks like this one are particularly difficult to detect. Other attacks that might attempt to lure users to fraudulent Web sites can be easily avoided with common security software. But by targeting a site that people trust and visit habitually, he said, hackers have a better chance of getting through those filters.

“These attacks are so devastating because the attackers are compromising legitimate Web sites,” said Mitchell, who does not work for the stations.

According to Mitchell, the attacks on WTOP and Federal News Radio Web sites installed two types of malware. The first is a fake antivirus software, which identifies false threats and collects users’ credit card information when they try to “subscribe” to a program to clean their computers.

The second is a type of software that connects users’ computers to a larger network that hackers can control and use to increase the number of “clicks” on digital advertisements that make them money.

WTOP and Federal News radio did not comment on Mitchell’s assessment.

Those who think they have been affected by the attack should scan their computers for infections using legitimate anti-virus software, the stations’ statement said. “WTOP is still in the process of performing a thorough analysis to ensure our systems are free of malicious content,” the statement said.

Mitchell said the attacks appeared to have been motivated by financial gain, in contrast to recent breaches of other media sites such as the Associated Press, which were aimed at getting publicity for the perpetrators. In that instance, hackers successfully gained access to the news service’s Twitter account to send a false message about a bombing at the White House, which briefly sent the stock market into a free fall.

Both radio stations are owned by Hubbard Radio.

Washington media websites hit by cyber attacksinShare.0
By Danny Palmer
http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2266710/washington-media-websites-hit-by-cyber-attacks#ixzz2ShPjUHci

Several media outlets in the Washington DC area have had their websites hacked and used to spread malware.

WTOP, the largest radio station in the region, and Federal News Radio, along with the website of technology blogger John Dvorak were all infected by a waterhole attack. A waterhole attack is when a popular website is covertly injected with malware, and then goes on to infect users who visit it.

The attack on the Washington websites used a specific exploit which targeted third-party Java or Adobe browser plug-ins. That redirected users to another location that encouraged them to install a "scareware" scam anti-virus software program called Amsecure, infecting the target with malware.

According to a statement by WTOP, the infection is only a risk to those using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, with users of other unaffected.

"WTOP.com is currently dealing with a malicious cyber attack, which attempts to use our site to infect computers with malware when using the Internet Explorer (IE) browser," said the statement.

"To help protect our website visitors and prevent any further damage, we have blocked access to WTOP.com from Internet Explorer. We believe Chrome, Firefox and Safari are safe alternatives, and suggest you use one of these browsers to access the WTOP website."

At the time of writing, the radio stations are still performing an analysis to ensure their websites are free of malicious software.

"We take cyber security very seriously, and ensuring that our listeners and readers can safely come to our site is of the utmost importance," said Lisa Wolfe, program director of Federal News Radio.

There's no indication about the source of the attacks, although the targeting of Federal News Radio, a station for government employees, could indicate an attempt by hackers to steal information from the US government.

Neither radio station has indicated how many users could have been affected or how the hack was actually detected.

The media has increasingly come under attack from cyber criminals, with The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian and The Onion all recent victims of computer hackers. Earlier this month, Twitter warned that hackers will continue to target the media.

WTOP invited this by never hiring any competent technical staff. Their forums are a disaster, with discussion threads often reused across different news articles spanning several years' time.
