If radar detector is illegal in Fairfax County(and VA),
why do so many drivers have them?

I recently picked up a Bushnell baseball speed gun for
$30. It works great for baseball.

Sometimes on my way home, I would just pull the speed
gun's trigger and watch dozens of red brake lights
come on in front of me. This is especially so on I-66
from Falls Church to Centerville. (provided there's
no congestion...) I'm assuming all those people
have radar detectors in their cars, otherwise, why
would they all slow down for no reason at the exact
same time?

Where do I get a radar blaster like that one. It seems I could have an awful lot of fun with it.

VA police use laser from what I understand. I am no expert - what is the truth on this?

Police can use laser (LIDAR), radar, or microcomputer (VASCAR) to measure speed of vehicles in Virginia. There is nothing in the code about citizens using their own Radar devices, but you may get pulled over if you use it on the road. Police vehicles are often equipped with VG2 radar detector, detectors. Radar detectors omit a radar signal, just like a radar gun. If the VG2 detects the signal coming from your vehicle, an officer would have reasonable suspicion to stop you and search for that device. Just a heads up.

As to why so many people have them, same reason so many people speed and drive like lunatics: They don't care about the traffic laws.
