Why is 66 west so jam-packed on Saturday afternoons?
I live in Centreville and work in Arlington
And it takes me almost an hour to get home

Have you been to DC lately? I'd want to get the hell out of there too whenever possible.

Its all the DC shut ins driving out to VA to save .25/gal on gas and then they turn around and drive right back,

people tired of watching their flatscreen lcd. time to go for a drive.

Are you new here? Today, there was at least 50% less congestion than the typical weekday. EVERY FUCKING WEEKDAY is a SHITDAY.

It's because slow traffic doesn't keep right anymore.

I have to agree that the slow left lane drivers are causing congestion - they really seem to be clueless about the situation.

Perhaps it is time for another public advertisement - "left lane not cool if you drive like a fool".

no, it couldnt be the simple fact that they havent widened the fucking highway in 30 years.

Couldnt be the fact their aint but one freeway connecting DC region to the rest of the fucking Country not called "The East Coast" that I dont have to go two states out to get to

no, couldnt be that they've added residential to the ass end of the freeway for 3-4 counties over the last 20-30 years, but left the other end ONLY TWO FUCKING LANES so nobody can get to and fro without sitting on their asses for 40 minutes minimum.

yeah, it's gotta be left lane hogs. They've got to be the ones causing traffic slowdowns since it's been scientifically proven that going the speed limit causes traffic jams o_0

Haha! The hundreds of VDOT employees who foisted the mindfuck known as "I-66" sit in offices laughing all day about the sheep trapped on I66 7 days a week. If it was running too smoothly, they'd add more random lane openings/closings, paint more lanes different colors for different vehicle classifications, and whatever else it would take to slow things back to a crawl.

These are reasons why 66 has been and will remain a congested mess for decades to come:

1) The new interchange for the Beltway and 66 both in and outbound are still a collosal fail. Westbound merges too many lanes into too few in too short a distance. Eastbound groups exits for 495 north and south into a short, ill-defined area.

2) Exits for points west including Nutley, 123, Rt50 and Rt 28 should have flyovers for left-lane drivers and conventional exits for right lane drivers. As it is, those in HOV or left lanes have to cut across multiple lanes thus slowing traffic and causing accidents.

3) Red/Green arrow lanes a ridiculous, useless, nonsensical mistake. That lane should be open 24/7. Most people ignore the red arrows on the weekend anyway. Only Virginia, stuck in the 1940's would pay millions of dollars to lay down pavement then make a law against using it.

4) Overhead signs informing travel times are a stupid, stupid waste. About 10% of drivers are functionally illiterate so when they see a message of 6 words they slow down to 15mph while they sound out the letters to see that it says they're going to be late to their diswasher job.

5) NOT making 66 east 4 lanes each way inside the beltway was a numbskull mistake. Pretending that Arlington is a pristine, quiet community that needs to be protected from traffic in the most important city in the western world is again a clear message that Virginia's traffic mentality is run by cantankerous codgers who still resent the horseless carriage and the federal gubmint.

6) Painting the double-white line for the HOV lane served to increase the profits of a paint company and not one damn thing else. If the traffic engineers REALLY wanted to keep people in or out of that lane it should have the pylons same as the toll lanes on the beltway.

7) There SHOULD be an express lane west...you get IN at 495 and you CAN'T get out until Rt 50.

8) The entire Federal Government should telecommute AT LEAST 3 days each week.

VDOT didn't learn anything from their original bone-headed I66/I495 interchange. There can't be anyone at VDOT with an IQ above 80. But at least they're keeping the learning disabled out of institutions!

ABSOLUTELY AGREE! All those years of construction and the result is just as bad as before -if not worse.

that Arlington thing is REALLY fucking nuts - out one end of their ass they say all this shit about how cool high density everything is blah blah blah - then out the other end they say "oh, but we have to protect some HOUSES"

we can blame Richmond all we want it really our faults cause we keep electing the same ppl who dont get that taken care off.................

That would only work if you can read the English language.

When your only driving experience (prior to entering the US illegally) is an Ox Cart or a Rickshaw, you tend to drive in any lane you want.

I imagine that the wineries have something to do with it as well

man this saturday traffic has been bad for me the past 6 months

Animation at the bottom shows how slow traffic in the left lane causes jams. With common sense, you don't need to pound fists demanding scientific proof.

Also, most left lane slow pokes are speeding too. Just not as much as the rest. Their legal right to the left lane is negated.

All of the above. Slow left lane drivers, too much volume, no lane expansion, poorly designed ramps with limited merge area. Traffic engineering is an oxymoron in NOVA.
