The Picture That Ended Terry McAuliffe's Bid for Governor
Posted by: Friend of Anthony Rodham ()
Date: April 06, 2013 02:24PM

Some may say that this picture proves that not all of Terry's "deals" are made in secret back rooms. But that's not the point. The cigar-chomping self-described kingmaker faces a lot of questions about his "headquarters" business office that turned out to be nothing more than a closet-sized room with a receptionist. There will be many more questions (and answers) in the next three months, about the $20 million and other money deals between these people.

Terry McAuliffe could still become the governor of Virginia. It's bad enough that the state has two do-nothing, blind, liberal idiots as senators (Kaine and Warner). If McAuliffe becomes governor, the state is toast.

This story won't stick. It will never make it out to the people who will vote. Instead, McAuliffe will use his lofty bankroll as well as the money of wealthy Democratic contributors to try and smear any credibility that K. Cuccinelli has.

Just more of the "same old, same old" from the increasingly-corrupt Democratic party.

Pathetic !!

I've been saying for years that the Mafia never went away, they just became our government. How long are we going to wait until we take action to get our government back from these corrupt crooks?

Only thing Holder might do in this case is sell a Pardon to Terry if he has time.

http://watchdog.org/76965/experts-question-source-of-mcauliffe-car-company-funding/

RICHMOND — Gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s use of an immigrant-investor program to raise money for his electric-vehicle venture [updated] is unworkable, experts said.

To kick-start GreenTech Automotive in Mississippi, the Virginia Democrat has sought funding through federal EB-5 immigration visas. In exchange for investments of $500,000, foreign nationals can gain U.S. residency for themselves and their families.

But the EB-5 system has been heavily criticized for its lack of transparency and lackadaisical enforcement. McAuliffe’s venture is seen as a particularly bad fit for the alien-investor program that’s supposed to create U.S. jobs.

Documents obtained by Watchdog.org show that, in their 2009 analysis of the project, Virginia officials warned Gov. Tim Kaine about the project. Allowing GreenTech to proceed with EB-5 funding in that state “would cause some to conclude that the commonwealth knew, or should have known, that there were problems, but proceeded nonetheless.”

“EB-5 is good for funding certain kinds of projects, but it’s not appropriate for this type of large-scale, long-term funding,” said Michael Gibson, managing partner of U.S. Advisors, a Florida-based research and investment firm knowledgeable about the program.

McAuliffe, the company’s founder and chairman, announced in 2009 intentions to build “neighborhood electric vehicles” that are little bigger or faster than golf carts. The GTA website touts “Green Jobs Made in the USA,” but, in fact, few U.S. jobs and fewer cars have been created.

“This project is a fantasy. It’s really a very poorly conceived project for EB-5 financing, and extremely problematic,” Gibson told Watchdog.

GreenTech’s conduit for EB-5 investors is Gulf Coast Funds Management Ltd., a regional center authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The center’s board of directors is larded with political cronies who have close connections to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Are you saying that Terry McAuliffe created a scam corporation to funnel tens of millions of dollars of Chinese money to the Clintons in return for US citizenship opportunities? That would make a great movie, how would it be possible in the real world?

Both parties are becoming intolerable. The GOP has become very conservative, while the Democratic Party continues to become very liberal. A centrist party will pop up and drive both out of power. Saying Cuccinelli has credibility is a farce. Regardless of if you agree with his politics or not, a state cannot refuse to implement a federal law. End of story.

Obamacare has some good provisions and some bad provisions. Saying that it should be completely repealed is throwing the baby out with the bath water. It needs to be amended; the IPAB needs to go to hell.

Please provide evidence that criminal republicans are returned to office once their misdeeds become known. GW Bush almost lost to Al Gore because a 25 year old drunk driving incident was splashed all over the news 3 days before the election, losing his 3 - 4 point lead in the polls as Brian Williams and his fellow anchors led the news for 3 nights with that story.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like republicans much more than democrats, but they do hold their candidates to a much higher standard. Most probably because the republican base has more evangelicals and bible-belt voters who have stricter morals than the democrat base.

No it needs to be thrown out and start fresh which would be far easier than trying to go through a 7 foot tall stack of papers and add onto it amending it. No bill should be so complicated it has to be 7 feet tall, that alone should say its full of bs stuff and quite frankly would probably be impossible to go through and amend properly avoiding the unintended consequences that would make the new bill just as bad as the current one.

Republicans talking about corruption. Like they give a fuck about corporate corruption. They vote for a party that represents corporate interests. Even their competing candidate here, Cuccinelli is getting his palms greased left and right right now as we speak.

Bottom line is, wait til Cuccinelli gets asked about forced invasive ultra sounds and his stand on comparing slavery to abortion. This race was over before it started.

Many bills are incredibly long. Obamacare addresses issues that nobody else had cared to address. There are flaws with it. It's funny, people said the same things about Medicare when Medicare was passed.

Are you still upset because I creamed you in debate the last time? Listen Liberal Logic, you may think you set the standard here when it comes to projecting the conservative position. But that is still inferior to the intellect for someone like myself. That was just a taste. You're also defending the indefensible. It's not a fair fight. I am a well defined highly intelligent and extremely strategic debater.

You will simply fall flat on your face once again. I am very capable of engaging you and mercilessly defeating you on any given subject. Take my word for it when I tell you, you shouldn't try to elevate yourself to my heights or draw my attention because it will be to the detriment of the perception you've tried to build.

AN: McAuliffe’s Chinese EV Factory “Dead On Arrival”
By Edward Niedermeyer on September 6, 2011

Remember Bertels’ stranger-than-fiction write-up of former DNC Chair Terry McAuliffe’s Mongolian EV /Visa plant? Charles Child at Automotive News has looked at McAuliffe’s scheme and comes away less than entirely impressed, noting that

even casual scrutiny of his vision reveals overwhelming obstacles. Let’s be plain: His plan is dead on arrival.

You won’t find a zinger like that in Bertel’s piece, but only because he keeps his head down detailing the entire bizarre history of McAuliffe’s venture, its roots as the “Hybrid Kinetic Motors” visa scheme, its ties to a couple of notorious former Brilliance boys and its money-first, product-later approach. Child’s takedown isn’t as well researched (nor does it contain anecdotes about former a Ambassador driving a lawnmower into a swimming pool), but the few remaining folks out there who think the former Democrat fundraiser might be on to something big should probably read on. After all, McAuliffe has put so much hype out there, this story is something of a target-rich environment for truth-tellers.

Child quickly identifies McAuliffe’s major contribution to the project: hype.

What keeps the vision alive is McAuliffe’s audacity. With confidence and verve, he spells out his job-creating optimism on friendly national cable shows such as “The Daily Rundown” and “The Ed Show,” also on MSNBC… Bold auto visions are fine. But they require staggering amounts of money and manpower. And there’s no tangible indication that McAuliffe has either.

McAuliffe then claimed that his home-building company built 1,300 homes at its peak, but an adviser later clarified that the figure was closer to 800.

And at a candidates' forum in December, in response to Moran's claim to be the only candidate who had run a business and raised a family in Virginia, McAuliffe boasted of launching five businesses in Virginia.

It turned out that all five are investment partnerships, with no employees, registered to his home address in McLean.

I'm relatively unbiased, as I'm something that really doesn't exist anymore: a Conservative Democrat. However, when you're attacked, you tend to resort to ad hominem attacks. When Liberal Logic is attacked, he fights back with what he perceives as fact, some of which is slanted and some of which isn't.

Selective with our memory of recent events are we? The Republican having sex (trying actually) with male Pages was Mark Foley of Florida. The same rumors circled around Idaho Sen. Larry Craig, whose "wide stance" in the Minneapolis airport went viral, for years.

While we're at it, let's give an honorable mention to Bob Allen, Republican representative from Florida and McCain's Florida election committee chairman. He was convicted in 2007 for soliciting sex from a male undercover police officer in a public restroom. He stated that he offered the big, Black, male cop a blow job because he was afraid of him. Interesting reason for a stauch supporter of sending other people's kids to Iraq.

The poster that started this thread brought up a "Republican who got caught with a hooker and is still in the senate" not a republican senator soliciting gay sex who is still in the senator. The senator he/she is referring to is David Vitter of Louisiana, who confessed his "sin" after an investigation in 2007 revealed he had been a customer of the "D.C. Madam". I guess it helped that he avoided prosecution because the statute of limitations had run out. Evidently, the good Republicans of Louisiana aren't troubled by their senator getting off on a technicality.

Nader pay-off allegation, 2009

In late May 2009, presidential candidate Ralph Nader alleged that McAuliffe offered him money to avoid key states during the 2004 presidential election. According to Nader, McAuliffe offered to financially support Nader's 2004 presidential campaign in 31 states if Nader agreed to stay off the ballot in 19 swing states.

The Washington Post reported the allegation had first been made in a book -- Grand Illusion: The Myth of Voter Choice in a Two-Party Tyranny -- by Theresa Amato, a Nader campaign manager. (The publication date of the book was June 2009). The Washington Post reported that "McAuliffe isn't denying Nader's claim, but he would not talk publicly about it." An aide to McAuliffe wrote in a statement that McAuliffe "was concerned that Ralph Nader would cost John Kerry the election as he did Al Gore in 2000 and give us another four years of George W. Bush."[63][64]

McAuliffe also responded to the allegation through his spokesperson Mo Elleithee, who said the then-DNC chairman had "engaged in a conversation with Nader to try to convince him not to run, or at the very least to not compete in the targeted battleground states...He never offered him any money. He DID offer to make Ralph a part of the DNC surrogate operation, send him around the country to talk about his issues -- which would have been a DNC funded operation".[65]

Home loan to Clintons, 1999

In September 1999, McAuliffe put up $1.35 million to secure a loan for Bill and Hillary Clinton to buy a home in Chappaqua, N.Y. The home would later serve as a base for Hillary Clinton's run for the U.S. Senate from New York.
There was never a legal issue involved; rather, critics charged that the perception was a problem. "I am always uncomfortable when people who give money or raise money are personally involved with a public official financially...It's worrisome for a sitting president to be this dependent on any one person financially," said Charles R. Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity.[61]

Lincoln bedroom sleepovers, 1995-96

McAuliffe wrote the famous memo to rent out the Lincoln Bedroom in the White House to major campaign givers. At least 938 people paid between $25-$2000 in the form of donations to the DNC for the privilege of spending the night in the Lincoln Bedroom.[53][54] [55] [56] [57]

John Huang, 1994-97

During 1997, several DNC fundraising scandals that took place during the 1996 election cycle came to light, including the matter of a former mid-level Commerce official named John Huang.[46]
McAuliffe has made conflicting statements regarding his relationship with Huang, some of which he later recanted.

According to Mother Jones Newswire, McAuliffe's statement are important to understanding the campaign finance scandals at the time. In the 1970s, Congress limited individual contributions to candidates, but it left unrestricted the amounts donors could give to the parties so long as the donations were not targeted to specific candidates. Among the issues surrounding the 1996 elections was the charge that the Clinton/Gore campaign effectively directed fundraising and spending at the DNC.
Mother Jones Newswire noted McAuliffe had argued that he was not involved in the campaign during most of 1996, when many apparent fundraising abuses -- such as the hundreds of thousands of dollars solicited from questionable sources by DNC fundraiser John Huang -– took place. As McAuliffe told Mother Jones, "From November [1995] until September [1996] I was gone."

He said he left when the Clinton/Gore committee reached the maximum total in contributions allowed by law. Miami lawyer Marvin Rosen took over fundraising at the DNC shortly thereafter, and McAuliffe says he didn't return until September to help the DNC make a final fundraising push.
Mother Jones adds, "But McAuliffe was contradicting his own statements from other interviews, in which he said he had met Huang briefly at a 1996 dinner. Also, Huang and his wife, Jane, contributed $25,000 to the DNC while McAuliffe was DNC finance chairman in 1994." The article continues:

In a second interview with Mother Jones, McAuliffe changes his story, acknowledging that he raised money in the spring and summer of 1996. He estimates he raised $3-$5 million for the Democrats and was present at two intimate White House lunches during the period, blaming his involvement on big-money contributors who didn't want to deal with anybody else. "People knew I was close to the president," he shrugs. "Probably closer than most people. So they wanted to be with me."
At this point, the motivational pitchman who can "sell" is replaced by an operative professing fundraising fatigue. "I'm tired of the dough," he says. "I don't ever want to do it again." For the next two years, McAuliffe says, he'll concentrate on his home-building business, American Heritage Homes. [47]

I love seeing Republican retards expend emotional and physical energy only to come up with a loss.

Now, I think someone knows they have a seriously flawed candidate....
I think someone is tryin to muddy the waters the best they can before Cuccinelli decides to start opening his mouth.

I see some pretty concerned and nervous loyalists. See, some people might take offense to the actions and words of our fellow citizens whom refer to themselves as Republicans. I on the other hand know when to be entertained by them. This, is one those moments. Watch em squirm.

And which one of you went out of your way to register my name? How flattering.

Federal City National Bank, 1988-91

In January 1988, when he was 30 years old, McAuliffe became the youngest chairman of a bank in the history of the United States when he assumed responsibility for all aspects of Federal City's operations.[5]
Shortly thereafter, the bank loaned $125,000 to a political action committee that supported Richard Gephardt's Presidential campaign. McAuliffe told the New York Times that he abstained from voting on the loan because he was also the Gephardt campaign's finance chairman.[6]
The bank also provided loans to Tony Coelho and the then-Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Jim Wright. Both Representatives would soon retire from Congress under the cloud of scandal.[7]

In 1991, under McAuliffe's leadership, the bank was cited by federal regulators for unsafe and unsound banking practices. Regulators forced McAuliffe to sign a consent agreement that required the bank to hire outside management, review delinquent loans, track bad credit, and raise additional capital. [8]

Ultimately, McAuliffe was unable to raise the additional capital required by federal regulators.[9]

In December 1991, after four years as chairman and with his bank reeling from real-estate losses, McAuliffe merged Federal City National Bank with another institution run by political insiders, Credit International Bank. [10]

Look at those to love birds, actually, Cuccinelli stabbed McDonnell in the back by proclaiming his Tax Bill as unconstitutional for political game. That was pretty dirty.

Paid for weddings, cruises on yachts, private corporate jet accommodations all brought to you by the Virginia tobacco industry for yours truly, McDonnell and Cuccinelli. The day Republicans bring up corruption is they day you know they got something they're trying to hide.

The Boland Group and American Pioneer Savings Bank controversy, 1991-94

In May of 1990, American Pioneer, a savings and loan bank headquartered in Florida and owned by McAuliffe's future father-in-law (Richard Swann), was seized by federal regulators and placed into receivership with the Resolution Trust Corporation.[12]

In June of 1991, McAuliffe, Tony Coelho and John Boland organized a commercial real estate company named the "The Boland Group, Inc." McAuliffe responsibilities included business development.

Between 1991 and 1994, The Boland Group brokered at least two deals between American Capital Group and the Resolution Trust Corporation. A notable principle at American Capital Group was Dorothy (Swann) McAuliffe, daughter of Richard Swann. Specifically, Dorothy McAuliffe's presence raised eyebrows because the property her company purchased was held by her father's failed bank, American Pioneer Savings and Loan before turned its assets over to the taxpayer funded Resolution Trust Corporation.[13]

The Boland Group's client list included the Clinton/Gore 1996 Re-election committee, the Resolution Trust Corporation, the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service and several of Washington's most powerful and connected law firms and lobbying shops.

In 1997 McAuliffe told Mother Jones Magazine that he was never a partner in the Boland Group, that his exposure was limited to receiving referral fees and that he severed all ties with the company in March 1994. [14]

Global Crossing Scandal

McAuliffe, who was involved in the Global Crossing Scandal, after having made 18 million dollars on a $100,000 dollar investment in a company that went bankrupt and investors were bilked out of their money. McAuliffe was with Global Crossing for only 6 months but made a profit of 17.9 million. Sound shady? It gets worse. McAuliffe arranged a golf outing between President Clinton and Global Crossing CEO, Gary Winnick. Winnick contributed 1 million to the Clinton Presidential Library and a few weeks later, Global Crossing got a 400 million dollar contract from the Pentagon, courtesy of the commander and thief.

Which he will do. So, unless you have endless expendable energy on corrupt politicians that are bound to lose. Take it easy, we still got a long way to go.

Telergy, 1999-2001

From August of 1999 until August of 2001, McAuliffe served on the Board of Directors at Telergy, a telecom company. Press reports indicated that he had been helping the company in an unofficial capacity for the previous three years. In September 1999, a month after McAuliffe joined the board, Global Crossing invested $40 million in Telergy; McAuliffe brokered the deal and pocketed $1.2 million for his efforts. In August and September of 2001, Telergy laid off 450 employees without providing any severance package. In December that year, Telergy began Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings.

McAuliffe, Kelly, Raffaelli, 1990-94

From 1990 until 1994, McAuliffe headed and led business development for the lobbying law firm McAuliffe, Kelly, Raffaelli.[11] As the partner in charge of bringing in clients, McAuliffe claims he never lobbied on their behalf. Nonetheless, the clients he brought to the firm occasionally engendered controversy. For example, in a 1992 report titled "The Torturer's Lobby," the Center for Public Integrity revealed that McAuliffe, Kelly and Raffaelli received several hundred thousand dollars for managing Turkey's image in the United States. The report detailed specific incidents of official torture sponsored by the Turkish government.

I grant you that Terry McAuliffe has never been elected to anything, which is why we can't list reasons for electing him, only reasons not to elect his opponent.

In 2013 politics, it's money and favors that will make the difference. Terry has both heading in his direction.

InPhonic, 2000-2007

In September of 2000, Terry McAuliffe joined the board of InPhonic, a Washington-based company that sold cell phones and related technology over the Internet.

The law firm of Finkelstein Thompson LLP announced a lawsuit seeking class action status has been filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia against InPhonic, Inc. in May of 2007.[15]
In November 2007, the company filed for bankruptcy. According to court filings related to a lawsuit, while “on the verge of bankruptcy”,

InPhonic concealed its financial condition and borrowed $4 million from Icon International, a corporate bartering brokerage. In addition, thousands of InPhonic’s customers filed complaints alleging that the company did not honor its rebate promises. The company was rated “F” by the Better Business Bureau.[16]

Now the fucking troll is imitating me. What a fuckin bunch of insecure losers these Republicans are. To debate my own imitation, Terry McAullife has a thousand times more overall experience than the loud mouth New Jerseyite has ever had. Whether it be business ventures, national and international diplomacy, and running a national presidential campaign. I don't ever imagine Cuccinelli having the same management or organizational skills. In actuality the resumes of the two don't even compare.

Cuccinelli is a nobody Attorney General election that was successful in a Coup against Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling. A man with actual experience. Another Tea Party favorite for trying to undermine our current president and his national initiatives.

All this retard Cuccinelli has on his record. Oh and some corrupt dealings with Star Scientific Inc. He told priests to be willing to disobey the law and go to jail to undermine the Affordable Care Act. Our Attorney General openly telling religious figures to disobey the law.

It's not like we don't know what kind of idiot Cuccinelli is.

Virginia does not need an anti Executive Branch Governor when Republican policies such as the sequester are disproportionately harming Virginia above all other states.

Cuccinelli would probably side with the insider Tea Party fucktards that gave him a shot at governor over the economic interests of Virginia. I don't see this man improving on the economic situation created in Northern Virginia by Democratic predecessors. Bob McDonnell has been and utter failure with no accomplishments other than his own political ambitions and raising taxes on the north.

Cuccinelli will be even worse.

Probability overwhelmingly suggests that we will be dealing with 3 years of Barack Obama and 1 year of Hillary Clinton right over the Potomac for our next Governor. Ken Cuccinelli translate into tons of lost economic opportunity over that time frame while appeasing those whom put him in power, the Tea Party.

He will also be able to close out his governorship with heightened accomplishment if Hillary Clinton comes to power because he was her campaign director.

Ken Cuccinelli is going to be nothing more than a hostile loser to the federal government for the Tea Party for four years and is going to be a lost 4 years for Virginia.

In March 2009, McAuliffe ran an ad taking credit for helping to elect President Obama.[38] The Moran campaign responded: “The truth is, Terry McAuliffe led the campaign that ran the "3 a.m." attack ad against Barack Obama. McAuliffe worked to put up the ads that questioned Obama’s ability to be president. The fact is, if Terry McAuliffe had his way, Barack Obama wouldn’t be our president today."[39][40]

What's up with the unreferenced end notes -- [38],[39],[40], etc.? Are you going to "publish" the references as well, or does your mastery of copy and paste not extend that far.

While McAuliffe was clearly successful as a fundraiser, some believed McAuliffe's DNC tenure amounted to a failure where it mattered most: electing Democrats. In December 2004, the online political activist organization MoveOn.org sent a letter to its 2 million members stating "No More Special Interest Politics at the DNC",[29] and in a direct criticism of McAuliffe said: "Under outgoing DNC chair Terry McAuliffe, the Party cozied up to many of the same corporate donors that fund the Republicans -- drug companies, HMO's, media conglomerates, big banks, polluting industries. The result was watered down, play-it-safe politics that kept the money flowing but alienated traditional Democrats as well as reform-minded independents in search of vision and integrity. And so the Party lost ground."

National progressive bloggers such as Markos Moulitsas summed up McAuliffe's DNC tenure: "The McAuliffe reign has ended in disaster, with the Democratic Party in worse position electorally than when he came in as Chair in February 2001. We have lost seats in the House and Senate, and failed to cleanly take out the Worst President Ever. While McAuliffe was an artful fundraiser, the party continued to lack the ability to develop a clear message or properly frame the political debate. And it's been killing us." [30]

OK, I get it. You want me to write why Terry McAullife would be a good Governor for Virginia, without comparing him to his opponent. Here goes, in my own words:

Terry McAullife has overall experience. Whether it be business ventures, national and international diplomacy, and running a national presidential campaign.

That's it. Nothing more.

And yet, he won by 18 points less than 4 years ago. This election will be closer than that no doubt but underestimating his support is foolish. Obama won't be on the ballot to get out the college kids and blacks.

Yes, while riding on the coattails of Bobby "Transvaginal Ultrasound" MacDonnell. That'll not be the case this time around.

Take a look at what a mockery the Kookster's ideologically-driven agenda has made of the Commonwealth. The Kooster is, well, kooky. That's bound to be spotlighted during the campaign and will prove to be his downfall.

IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) land scam.

American Capitol Management Company, owned by McAuliffe, entered into a partnership with the IBEW pension fun, run by close McAuliffe friend Jack Moore. The union pension fund put up 39 million dollars and McAuliffe put up $100 dollars and the deal called for both parties owning a 50% stake in the company and all profits would be split evenly. A second deal saw the union put up another 10 million for a second land deal. After a short while the union bought out McAuliffe’s shares in two purchases of 2.45 million. Not a bad return on just $100 dollars.

Moore and another official were found to be liable and had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution and the union had to reimburse the pension fund to the tune of 5 million dollars. Again, McAuliffe walked away scot free with almost 2.5 million dollars profit.

"I especially want to express my personal appreciation to our Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, for taking on and winning this fight on behalf of Fairfax County."

There are always ups and downs to Republicans. On one hand Cuccinelli will ruin the state, it's image and accomplish nothing. He will spend his whole term in office using our state as the front line for the Tea Party against the federal government that we are so dependent on economically. He will do all in his power to sabotage our transition into the Affordable Health Care Act. This will cause tremendous long term problems and increased premiums in the state. But like Bush, if he is elected, at least he will fortify not seeing another Republican Governor in our state for decades. Cuccinelli is the worst of the worst, bottom of the barrel, incompetent blow hard that will buck the states economic interests for his ideological extremism.

Clinton Asked Ex-Aides' Help To Buy House
By DON VAN NATTA Jr
Published: September 25, 1999

In the tense days and hours before and after they signed an agreement to buy a white house in Chappaqua, N.Y., for $1.7 million, President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton sought financial assistance from former Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin and two former White House chiefs of staff, according to several people with knowledge of the arrangement.

But Mr. Rubin, as well as the chiefs of staff, Thomas F. McLarty 3d and Erskine B. Bowles, declined to help the Clintons buy the first home they will own since 1983, several people with knowledge of the requests said today. They said that Mr. Bowles had originally committed to being the guarantor but declined on Sept. 1, just three days after the Clintons signed an agreement to buy the house under the condition their loan would be guaranteed.

The couple then quickly put out feelers to Mr. Rubin and Mr. McLarty before finally asking Terry McAuliffe, the prolific Democratic fund-raiser, who agreed to guarantee the Clintons' mortgage by depositing $1.35 million in the bank as collateral.
