Car Tax Help Needed
Posted by: Jack ()

I just got my 2008 car tax in the mail today just like everyone else. I couldn't help but notice how inflated my assessed total value was. Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to pay my fair share of taxes but these bastards are passing on the pain of this budget shortfall on average joes like me. When I priced my car on KBB with every option it didn't even come close to the figure they assessed. Has anyone appealed their car tax before and what are the ways of lowering the assessed value? Thanks in advance for any serious advice.

Why don't you read the Tax Facts pamphlet they included in the same envelope?

Mine hasnt come yet, but from what I remember - they use some other "book" other than Kelly Blue Book and this "book" they use is from the previous January's valuation - nearly 2/3 of a year differnce from when the paymenty is due.

But what can you do? For the heck of it I had a 8 year old car they had valued at like $5500. The car had body damage and over 100,000 miles on it. I did send a letter with a picture of the car and a picture of the odometer and filed an appeal.

I got a letter back saying that the value was re-adjusted (they knocked off maybe $25 off the tax bill and this was when we paid the full car tax). And the letter said something like "No further valuations will be considered". This meant - "ok we gave you something now pay and shut up".

It was a victory, a small victory; but a victory none the less.

I wrote a system years ago that did car property tax assessments. The system I wrote used an annual tape from NADA - http://www.nada.com/ then matched certain sections in the VIN and cross reference them with the cars registered year. If they didn't match then it kicked out the car to an error report for follow up. After that it did a straight multiplier of the NADA value to get the tax amount.

What do I do if they under-value my car? How will this affect my car when
I want to trade/sell it in the future?

I just looked at my car tax bill... It shows my car as having a trade-in
value of only $11860.

However, my car is listed on KBB as more than $19495("Good" condition)
Even the "Fair" condition price is listed as $18025.

The KBB suggested retail value for my used car is well over $24000.

It doesn't matter on a trade in. The dealer is going to look at your car and give you his number anyway. You can argue, but the dealer probably won't change his number.
