why does boarding Amtrak train in Alexandria requires proof of US citizenship or legal status? (riding the Amtrak train from Alexandria to Charlotte) What gives them the authority to coduct immigration check within the US?

Last time I was on Amtrak (DC to NY) they asked for my driver's license when I bought my ticket (proof of identity I guess.) They didn't ask about citizenship or anything like that. Rules may have changed, though.

FYI - Don't get on the Amtrak going north in Alexandria, unless you are prepared to wait around at least an hour when it stops in DC.

It looks as if you are in this country legally, you should have
no problem as long as you have proper identification. If not,
then tough luck. Its all about National Security. Evidently
some folks do not like this idea, but hey, this is NOT their
country in the first place. These punks should go home and
demonstrate:

Must be a mistake!! That's not even required to travel BY AIR domestically, which I do all the time with a simple driver's license!

- Yes, south of DC the Amtrak trains are all diesel. They switch at Union Station, or sometimes, at Philadelphia.

"That's not even required to travel BY AIR domestically"

- You do not need any kind of ID (photo id or anything) to fly domestically.

You mean Benghazi, right? I'm not taking fucking Amtrak to Libya.

I remember once years ago smoking reefer all night long on the Southern Crescent. Good times.

I was just on it. They don't ask for ID. They barely even remember to ask for your ticket.

Not that it's too surprising from an agency where hundreds of employees claim they work more than 40 hours a day. You read that right.
