coppermine redistricting
Posted by: coppermine_rd ()

Coppermine RD is underway. At least 2 communities near centerville road have cut a deal with Stu Gibson. They have got a deal like North Reston bought during South Lakes RD. They get to keep their school choice. No word on what Stu Gibson got in return this time. Lets start the thread to exchange information on coppermine RD.

These docs dont matter. The boundary decision has already been made by the school board. This is just a formality to follow the process to be legally safe.

Does anyone know how the school board members are leaning on this one?

STOP! WAIT! What does Neen have to say about this? She claims to know everything. I can't believe she has not taken control of this thread yet. Something just does not add up here.

Coppermine is tucked away in western part of ffx cnty. This does not impact the larger set of people that South Lakes High School RD impacted.

Hahaha........thanks for remembering me!

This adds up the same way every other redistricting does. The school board member who represents the district where the school is decides what happens. If Coppermine is in Stu's district, he decides, and the other school board members go along with him. The exceptions are the two new, at large, school board members who have to think about re election and votes from that area of the county.

Therefore the vote will be 10-2, if not 12-0, for whatever plan Stu wants.

Only one school board member matters, the one in charge of that district. School board members won't mess around in each other's districts.

Neen, what would be Gibson's interest in this area. Which area is he going to side with this time?

The problem with Gibson is his lack of abililty to congregate all the communities with schools in his district selected for the boundary study, work with all of his constituents, reach out to them instead of alienating half of his constituents and making deals. So I am not sure how the Coppermine redistricting will be carried out. Maybe Gibson will give his plow speech. Seemed to work for the ill-fated recent RD, IMO.

You don't have to be a Neen to answer this one.

Stu's interest is in diluting the population of Title 1 schools with middle class kids preferably from school districts that are already mad at him. Floris is solidly against Gibson, so they will get the worst of this deal.

The only question is whether Oak Hill will get busted up to backfill Floris once the Floris community has been further divided or if their school board rep will save them as she did in the last RD.

After south lakes - now this for floris. It is like one tragedy followed by another.

The school board ( read Stu ) is planning to take areas such as Middleton farm and bus them to Herndon or McNair to improve scores of those schools. Several islands will be created in their quest to average out the scores.

Does anybody know which high school pyramid the new Coppermine school will be part of? Herndon or Westfield?

The school itself is in the Westfield district and FCPS statements have said that it is expected to feed Carson and Westfield.

If they redistrict Floris/South Lakes kids into it, that will not change the HS boundaries. The part of Floris that feeds South Lakes will still feed South Lakes even if they get redistricted to McNair (a Westfield/Herndon feeder) or Coppermine (Westfield). The same goes for any Herndon kids that might get sent to Coppermine. It could be yet another split feeder elementary school.
