Slow drivers in the left lanes
Posted by: 0tter ()

Get a damn clue. Slow traffic keeps right. People are pathetic. The lane farthest right on 66 is always the most empty now. When did it all go wrong? If you're being passed on the right, get over. I can't help but smile and shake my head as someone merges on and moves way out to the third lane even though there's not a soul for them to pass. Idiots.

Good, they should make it where there is absolutely no cruising in the left lane, it can only be used for passing.

I especially hate the aggressive douchebag people that drive slow in the left lane and then speed up when you try to pass them.

As long as you travel the speed limit, it's not technically illegal. However, it's not a good idea.

Left lane idiots are a extremely serious road hazard and through their inability to exercise basic road norms they put others at risk. I don't know how many times I've been caught in awkward dangerous traffic situations when trying to pass an inconsiderate asshole on the right.

And yet there is no effort on the part of law enforcement to reduce this nuisance and increase public awareness.

In European countries it is a major traffic violation to not move out of the left lane after passing or congest traffic as a result remaining in the left lane when vehicles are trying to pass.

The cops here can't seem to understand the importance of this simple concept. We need signs or something that pop out of the roof of our cars once we pass the vehicle that state "Your actions are inhibiting the flow of traffic, remove yourself from the passing lane immediately."

I just watched that news report and it was the most deceiving uninformative shock based crap reporting I have ever seen. The ticket was for the fact that she failed to move right and was impeding traffic. God only knows what time of congestion she was causing without self awareness or care.

That police officer and that law are important to the safety of our roads. FCPD should be doing more of this.

More so, the biased basis of this reporting is indicative of the problem of public knowledge and acceptance of basic road safety driving techniques.

The fact that it is even law and the inability for them to properly report on what law is broken is indicative of the problem.

Listen sonny, I'll drive in whatever lane I want! If you're in such an all-fire hurry leave your house early you young whipper-snapper.

Dude if 66 pisses you off stay off the Fairfax Pkwy. The speed limit is 50 and I have been stuck behind people doing no more than 30 and trash and landscape trucks going less than that. Because most of the Parkway is two lanes it causes a bottleneck quickly.

I see plenty of cops with radar, just once I wish they would tag these assholes for being in the left lane blocking traffic.

Pretty much. At the bottom of that second site it shows you how much faster traffic moves when people don't have to pass on the right. Imagine how nice 66 would be if slower traffic kept right. It's a mess now. I flash my highs every time. It's not an illegal form of signaling for a pass request.

Back in my youth, driving a sport bike with a 100-watt high beam, mounted relatively high on the bike (just how it was built, nothing I did), I used to enjoy finding someone banditing the left lane at night. Pull up behind them, count to 5 to give 'em a chance to move, then hit the high beam! It would light up the inside of the car like a cop's spotlight. I'd see them jump, and then GTF out of the fast lane in a hurry. 55/100 (as opposed to standard 55/60) H4 bulbs rock, even if they are slightly illegal on the road...

In MD where this happened, it IS still illegal to drive in the passing lane if you're not passing someone.

The ticket was withdrawn by the SP barracks commander. He said it was written under the wrong code section. He is a wimp who knuckled under the media pressure. Any charge can be amended on the court date to the correct charge.

This arrogant bitch deserved the ticket now she will continue to do it over and over thinking she is some kind of champion of the assholes who block traffic. No backbone on the part of the troopers commander.

That shit makes me hit my brakes, fast and hard. So when
your 200 lb bike meets my 6,000 lb SUV (with a heavy steel
rear bumper), who do you think is going to win, and when
the police report is written, who's going to be at fault
in a rear-end collsion? I hate pussies on crotch rockets.

Ah, forgot to mention, with 100W you don't have to be that close, and of course one is ready to both brake and swerve if the dipshit is not only banditing the lane but is a malicious prick like you.

Not tricky, but then, you clearly think that obstructing traffic is A Good Thing, so there's no point in trying to teach you even simple concepts.

P.S. "200lb bike"? You're thinking of a moped. More evidence of your lack of real-world comprehension.

Anyone tailgating knows to watch the brake lights. Even if Greybeard would tailgate (which he didn't mention doing) he could have definitely stopped his bike faster than you can stop some oversized grocery getter. Can you even parallel park it? Get off the road.

Back in college, I used to drive up and down 95 almost every weekend when going home. The abundance of jerk off drivers on that stretch of highway is astounding. Slow ass left lane hoggers, shitty rice burners doing 85+ weaving lane-to-lane and finally settling in the rightmost lanes out of all lanes, people texting and yapping away acting as if actually driving is low on their list of important things to do. All in all, their are a lot of fuckwad drivers on the roads so everyone has to cover their own asses out there.

Assholes who drive slow in the left lane cause the people stuck behind them to become aggressive drivers when they would otherwise not be. Who doesn't get at least a little angry when they get stuck behind some asshole cruising along at 60 in the left lane? By ticketing slow left lane drivers, the police will do much more to increase safety and reduce crashes. I usually agree with AAA's opinion but they are wrong in this case.
Also, the woman's (anybody else think it's funny that it was a woman?) excuse that it was windy is bullshit. While conditions may not have been optimal, that does not remove her responsibility to clear out of the left lane if she isn't passing. Other people may be able to keep their car in control in the wind and still have the right to speed by in the left lane.

This is an attempt by stupid people to usurp the norms of driving. These people don't understand or accept the concept of needing a passing lane for safety and to minimize congestion.

Instead, they are ganging up, the stupid people, that don't understand the unspoken or sometimes written into law, rules of the road.

They are trying to change these rules so the only responsibility of a driver on a highway is to obey the speed limit.

Therefore, they will have the right to and not be obligated at any point to not drive in any God damn lane they want.

They are changing the rules of the road with these actions and making it more dangerous for the rest of us. The stupid people are making their move on the right to left lane without the need to pass. They want to take away your right to a passing lane.

They want to abolish the passing lane for the rest of us. And the rest of us just sit here like they're not fucking stupid and we need to make these things clear to them.

Well eventually, they will see it as their duty to bog down the left lane and create greater congestion and traffic conditions and driver frustrations.

There's a SF story along those lines -- vehicles spotted violating traffic laws are marked with a paint bomb, then grabbed by another helicopter and crushed. Once you're marked, it thus behooves you to stop and GET THE HELL OUT OF THE CAR, because they aren't going to wait for it once they pick it up...!

No, page 2 of the article says that you are required to yield to speeding traffic as well, but it is just a quote from a State Trooper. I do recall seeing it somewhere in Code of VA that you do not have to yield to speeding traffic, but I don't remember where.

§ 46.2-823. Unlawful speed forfeits right-of-way.

The driver of any vehicle traveling at an unlawful speed shall forfeit any right-of-way which he might otherwise have under this article.

Ahh, there it is. So, it appears the overtaking driver does not have a right-of-way, yet the driver failing to yield in the left lane is still guilty of not yielding to the overtaking driver. Doesn't make much sense for both statements to be true, so perhaps that State Police officer was mistaken?

A lot of the left lane hog driving is due to unconcern and cluelessness about good road manners. I have also noticed plenty of times when traffic is merging onto a main highway via a left-side merge ramp instead of a right side entry ramp, when the cars are not anywhere up to speed to be able to merge safely into the fastest high-speed lane on the road with oncoming traffic speeding along in that left lane at 65 (usually +) miles per hour, and to boot, the traffic in the lane(s) farther to their right will not open up to let them merge over to the right so that they can get out of the speed lanes quickly. In lighter traffic, not much of a problem, but on the beltway it can be a big issue, especially if they are trying to get over to an exit ramp within a mile of where they got on! The old 66 interchange onto 495 where you have to zip on with little room into traffic going 70-80 MPH, cross 3 more lanes to hit the next 123 / exit over from the right lane in les than a mile, used to be McLean hell! So, both sides need to learn to give a bit to let things happen in these circumstances!

Roads are filled with people who will drive the speed limit even though the rest of the drivers are going 5-10 over because they think they're making things safer.

No, the right of way means if someone was at a stop sign and pulled out striking the speeding driver then the speeding driver would lose his right of way at the intersection.
Same thing if you turned left in front of a speeding vehicle. Normally you would be at fault but since the other driver was speeding they no longer had the right of way.

I agree having read what came before §46.2-823 pertaining to specific right-of-way situations.

So, you must yield to overtaking vehicles even if they are speeding. This makes sense from an overall safety perspective. Even if it weren't technically illegal, staying in the left lane while going the speed limit is just asking for something bad to happen. Move over and let the police deal with the people driving like idiots.
