They didnt want him back. They wanted him to leave making him an offer they knew he would turn down to save face. Mason is the type of school that doesnt want to be known as a sports school and thought he was getting (if not already had) than the school which the administrators didnt like so they let him leave.

This is after all the same school that has allowed Bill Brown to still have a job despite being in an area loaded with talent in baseball and having 20 years of mediocrity

Granted, VCU's still going to March Madness. And it's not like they blew a 24 point lead. But still.
