I see a lot of Persian guys and gals often pretending to have money or flaunting gaudy tasteless stuff (i.e. armani exchange and such).

I also noticed that the stuff they are obsessed with is generally European in origin... cars, clothes, handbags.

Why is this? Is it some kind of inferiority complex or secret desire to be European/white?

And don't get me wrong, I have lots of (well some) Persian friends that aren't like this... but still I've always wondered about this. Can someone please clear it up.

I’m Persian, and a good portion of Persian-Americans are very materialistic. The best luxury cars, fashionable clothes and top handbags all come from Europe. Pretty simple, really. You just find this intriguing because you see Persians as these foreign peoples who, unlike some other foreign types (like East Asians, who have Lexus/souped up Toyotas) don’t have anything of any style that is uniquely from Iran…except for our badass Persian rugs, of course.

Ever heard of a Persian Palace? It is a special type of McMansion out in southern California.


Basically when all the wealthy Iranians fled their country after the revolution/coup, they came to America, built homes out of proportion for their lot size, and used a mix of American and Middle Eastern styles for the architecture.
