Fairfax County Pkwy Near Fair Lakes
Posted by: wtfconstruction ()

Admittedly I don't go to the area too often, but I happened to go to Fairfax Town Center and Fair Oaks mall yesterday. I took Fairfax County Pkwy coming from Reston (going South). What the fuck have they done and what's going on right before Fair Lakes? Did they create this massive overpass just to clear up traffic going to I-66? It looks like an abomination and the exit to jump on Monument Drive or Fair Lakes just comes out of no where. Then once you get stopped at the first light.. it has only three lanes.. yet a sign indicating instructions for five lanes (wtf)? One of the lanes on the left appear to be just blocked off as well. The whole thing looks like an ugly cluster fuck. I assume tax payer dollars were used to fund most of this shit fest.

Curious to see other's thoughts on this that know what I am talking about. Is this a disaster or is it some welcomed genius to people that frequently drive it?

If "forever" means "less than two years", then true. It's a huge-ass job; they've actually done it pretty quickly, although now it's in that late stage where it SEEMS like nothing is happening. Hopefully it'll be done now, and you can whine about how traffic flows too smoothly through there.

Where in Fairfax has traffic flowed smoothly after completion?
NOVA has been a clusterfuck since the seventies. People are numb and will except a stick up their ass as acceptable.
Most roads are in a state of disrepair after two years in the region.

If we boast about being the greastest nation then start building and acting it.

They did this for the interchange of the fairfax and fair lakes parkways, which would back up during rush hour. That stretch of the parkway always seemed very pleasant, and the traffic did not seem bad that often. It is a mess. What is the point in living here if its going to look like a fucking New Jersey freeway?

And they used to have a race there once a year ("Fair Lakes 5k") but they don't have it anymore. My guess is because of this stupid overpass they put in.

you guise seriously dont understand how completely and utterly horrid that intersection was? and how needed this interchange is?

The part being rebuilt right now is THE OLDEST PART OF THE PARKWAY - was originally build with help of Corp $$$$$ when they built Fair Lakes - the chunk from 66 to Fair Lakes was built first, then they extended it to 50 and blah blah blah. But anyways, yeah, interchange is needed - it's the busiest light BY FAR on the whole damn thing in terms of left turns and cross traffic.

p.s. 8k hasnt been held in over 5+ years............so doubt cause of the overpass LoLz

I used to have to commute on FFX Co parkway in the morning to get to 66W. The parkway would usually be backed up all the way to Popes Head road, sometimes further just because of that intersection that you're talking about.

I haven't had to commute that way since they started construction so I don't know what it's like now in rush hour. I'm hoping the traffic is much lighter now that fairfax county parkway traffic doesn't have to wait at that light, if so I think it's a great change despite the eye sore.

I like GordonBlvd's first post, sounds like something Louie C.K. the comedian would say.

Geez us fucking pope, Gordon. It should have been done rite the first fucking time.
You stupid fuckin lame ass no nothins will accept anything ass progress.
No wonder shit is flowing uphill. This screwy country will buy loxstocked in barrels when it really is potomac catfish. Just like everything else, 3rd rate work on a hundred year project going nowhere.
I hope your kids are smarter than your generation and don't get fucked in the ass and told it's a flu shot.
Get it right the first time.
We sent men to the moon 44 years ago and the oldest part of that parkway is 24 years old. Roads in Europe are over 500 years old.

a) didnt see you lobbying for funding for an interchange in 85
b) didnt see you complaing when Fair Lakes GAVE you the damn intersection to begin with
c) you'd have been the FIRST ASSHOLE COMPLAINING about how the Govt was wasting unecessary $$$$$ on an interchange in the middle of nowhere that didnt connect up to anything when there were other things to pay for such as widening 66 PAST US 50!!!!! or do you even know what the fuck was going on back then, Einstein?

yeah, Fairfax - GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME LIKE THEY DO IN EUROPE!!!

Ah, yes, the good ol' days. I remember when you could drive from the White House to Leesburg without a traffic light! Of course, you'd have to stop to feed and water your horse several times, and it took all day...

I'd defimitely take exception to a stick up my ass. Or did you mean "accept"? English, tricky not is, except to non-native speakers, and since you claim to have been here since the 70s, you can't play that card.

If only we could keep those darned cars and trucks off 'em, they'd last forever! (Actually, no, weeds etc. would take over quickly, but your point is still specious.)

Right, those centuries-old dirt paths in other countries are MUCH better.

Plonk.

I drive it daily, bypassing those two traffic lights is already a great improvement, and where there used to be a 5-7 minute delay on my drive home between Rt 50 and Fair Lakes is now a smooth ride with zero delay. I enjoy the improvement.

You don't understand the concept of lanes, signs, and traffic lights and claim the road is the problem. Sounds to me like you have a Maryland license plate on your car.

I live near this intersection and drive through it every day. This ugly interchange addressed several problems:

As others have mentioned, the commute on the Parkway was terrible. There are a ton of people who work in Reston/Herndon and live in Springfield, Burke or points south. It didn't become truly bad until circa 2001, when they extended Monument westward to end at the Parkway.

As bad as simply going through it was, trying to make any sort of left turn there was a nightmare. Traffic would build and build and build, then only 6 cars could get through before the light changed and you had to wait 5 more minutes for the through traffic on the Parkway.

Now through traffic flows smoothly. Turning left from Monument is a breeze as the lights at the northbound and southbound ramps are timed nicely. Turning left from Fair Lakes is still not idea since those lights don't seem to be synchronized at all.

Many of the "parasites" are actually getting screwed by this thing. North Lake Drive used to intersect the Parkway. Now the only ways to get to that neighborhood require taking Monument or 50, then following long detours through residential areas.

seeing as the alternative was maybe getting killed in a broadside just to go to the store, I'd say the "parasites" arent really getting that screwed at all

It's very simple to change the timing of the lights.
And a less expensive.
Soon or to late people will realize how stupid we have become.

And buy a house near a store you can walk too.
You live in houses in suburbs where cars are your life.
Pretty pathetic and sad.

Or buy enough property so that you can homestead.

Seriously, this county needs to spend more money on transportation and use more eminant domain. I'm sure it would cost a lot of money but the county should have declared eminant domain on that SRS building and other commerical poperties near by and build a regular old clover leaf interchange than repeat all points north and south.

how simple is it? please explain how your timing changes will effect the flows of traffic. WE ARE ALL WAITING TO HEAR YR EXPERTISE ON THE SUBJECT, WALT STARLING! ROFLMAO@U acting like a Harry Potter magic wand is gonna magically fix everything.

actually, they can walk to the Safeway right behind them. HOWEVER (and I understand you dont leave the basement too much so that's why I'm explaining this to you) some people have more than just one other location to access. Different types of jobs, stores, etc. Yes, we know we are not all lucky like you to have a nice mommy come and bring us snacks and goodies - we so suck ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

talk about pathetic and sad.............

My mommie died 30 years ago. I don't like dark damp places. Spent a few years in one and became friends with the rats. We occasionally fought over food but they taught me quite a bit about behavior. I receive a nice pension for those years.
