Fairfax county needs to follow up.

I am so sick of learning that Fairfax county is paying for day care of 3 children so their illegal mother go to work for 7 dollars an hour and the provider is making 2000 dollars of them. The system is so F up that I feel I am going to throw up. How can we allow people to broke the law and pay for them to keep doing it. What left for the hard working citizen who pay taxes and obey the law. They need to create liaison office that investigate parents so they can use that money to lower the price of activities that parents who does not get help can afford it. I was looking for get day care for my son for spring break and I got this horror story.

Fairfax needs to do what Prince Willilam county did and make the residence prove they are here legally. This is one reason why Fairfax has so many illegals now because two years ago WP was after them. Living h ere all my life I could not tell you where to go to get any benifits but they know it all. They tell each other then our county personal is overwhelmed. We need people to do verification.

Hi lina, I am having a hard time understanding your post. Your writing skills are even worse than mine. lol!

Please keep in mind that in most cases the children of the undocumented Americans became legal US citizens the day they were born in this country. A county funded day care plan is a huge bargain for the taxpayers. Helping these children to become good well educated citizens when they grow up will return to the taxpayers at least fifty times the revenue that these programs cost.

Remember that education costs the taxpayers nothing, it pays and pays and pays. You should be very thankful that your government chooses to invest your tax dollars in this manor. The more we invest in educating our young citizens now the less we have to spend on courts, jails and prisons later.

I am shocked the woman is working at all. She would be better off on welfare and still demand the government watch the kids while she watches Maury on tv. Have her get in contact with the government immediately.

First, fairfax county schools dont teach anything. Second, part of the reason why is kids in school who cant speak english and just fuck it up for everyone else with their gang shit and disrupting class.

The reason the County is paying the daycare costs for someone making minimum wage is because there are businesses in the County that need their labor but are not willing to pay their employees enough money so those employees can afford daycare on their own. In other words IT IS A SUBSIDY TO THE BUSINESS. And the reason why those employees are illegals is the same. The employers can't get legal employees to work for them for the wages they are paying, because the standard of living you could enjoy for those wages is, by American standards, crap.

Of course part of the reason that employers pay those low wages is because we consumers demand goods and services for the lowest price and are willing to overlook the societal costs of producing to sell at those levels.

I'd agree with most of that but the 'we can't find employees to do such work' is BS. We certainly could back when I was a kid and we did just fine. While I am an 'old dude' it really wasn't that long ago.

My first 'real job' was washing dishes for minimum wage ($1.35/hr if I remember right) at the old S&W cafeteria at Landmark as soon as I was old enough (15-ish) to get a work permit. All of the rest of the people working there were kids just like me, a few older people, and some less well educated blacks. As it was everywhere else. Same with most of the rest of my friends, even those from relatively wealthy families. Pretty much everyone had some kind of job growing up. We did all kinds of things that now are claimed to be 'below' what Americans will do - lawn work, construction, painting, cleaning, fast food, retail, bussing and waiting tables, etc., etc. Even when I was in college we set up a business to service nearby motels using students to clean the rooms. We never had any problem finding kids to work.

While they weren't great jobs, I don't remember anyone thinking that they were too good to do work like that because they were 'Americans.' It wasn't something that you did to maintain any standard of living, so that wasn't even a consideration. It was just something that people did to make some money along the way and kind of a rite of passage until you worked your way onto something better. Beyond putting a little money in your pocket it also taught you how to work. And if nothing else what kind of work you didn't want to end up doing so you'd better get your ass in gear and do something to get some skills to better yourself. It also served to sort people out to some degree before we somehow began to assume that every kid had to go to college, even if they emerge with a worthless liberal arts degree and go sit in a cube for the rest of their lives doing basic administrative work. Lots of my fiends who weren't really college material learned trades along the way and/or started their own businesses, worked their way up in companies, or otherwise advanced themselves from lower-level jobs in other ways.

All of that seemed to change some time around the mid-80s. I wouldn't start to blame it on illegals - it's a lot more complex than just that - but it does coincide with the huge increase in both legal and illegal immigration that started around that time. Definitely helped push things in that direction and pushed most of those types of workers out of such jobs (e.g., trades). To some extent, it becomes self-perpetuating. Now we're faced with too many people who think that they are above all that who don't want to work even at much higher levels. As well as a huge influx of people at lower levels trying to raise families on jobs that were never intended to permit you to do so, and having to support them beyond that to permit them to. Then you have people complaining about making 'living wages' for menial work. For lots of reasons, that just doesn't work.

ITA, Old Dude. Those kinds of jobs were what me and my HS friends did for spending money and to pay for college. That today's HS kids find those jobs "beneath" them is a sad reflection on their upbringing. FTR, my kids DO work jobs like that, without complaint!

Minimum wage in 1967 was $1.40, in 2013 dollars that's $9.95, 37% higher than today's minimum wage of $7.25.

This would have been ~1973 - 1974. As I recall, VA didn't follow Federal minimum wage guidelines (the $1.40 number) until after that. There also may have been some subcategories of labor that had different rates (full- vs part-time, youth employment rates, food service, etc.). I don't recall all of the details now and Google wasn't much help on a quick search, but I'm pretty sure that number is right for me at the time however all of that worked out.

Using the Fed's CPI calculator shows $1.35 in 1974 dollars = $6.31.

http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=1.35&year1=1974&year2=2013

Your $1.40 number is roughly correct for 1967 dollars (I get $9.65 using the above) but, since both minimum wage and inflation have varied across given year-ranges, it's cherry picking to some extent since 1968 was a relative high point for minimum wage versus COL/inflation (the highest point since the 1930s).

In any case, none of that changes the point that minimum wage isn't really intended to support a family of 5 along with a higher basis for what's considered and acceptable standard of living that exists now more generally.
