No Crystal (southern White Castle) or Waffle House either.

The fast food choices in Northern VA are very repetitive, seems like the same 5-6 places on every corner. If we have to be buried in nothing but chain restaurants can't we at least get a good variety of them?

There used to be a bunch of them.

The one in Fair Oaks mall was probably the last one I ate at, probably been gone 10-15 years.

There's Long John Silvers at 29 and Blake Lane, near Fairfax Circle. As recently as a couple of years ago, there was one on Rt. 1, just a bit south of Alexandria.

The true travesty is that there are no Roy Rogers in Fairfax even though it got its start there. I go to Manassas or Leesburg for Roy's when I can.

The Eisteins Bagels on Old Keene Mill, east of Rolling Rd., used to be a Roy Rogers.

Also on Old Keene Mill, just West of the Anherst Ave. overpass, there's a defunct Long John Silvers.

There's one at the corner of Beulah St. and the Franconia Parkway; ate there for lunch today.

I think there's a notion that certain fast food chains are considered "low class" and will be unsuccessful in elitist Northern VA. That's why we have a freakin' Chipotle on every corner but no Waffle House in sight.

Frankly I don't see how Waffle House, Bojangles, and Sonic are any more ghetto than Burger King, Taco Bell, or MCD.

Oh, it would be so awesome if they would put a Waffle House in where San Vito's used to be in the KP shopping.

That, or a decent bar.

Hey Sleepy Holla, out of curiosity, where was the one on Ravensworth?

Hardees in this region got bought out by Roys. They saturated the area with Roys (remember when there were like 5-6 just around Tysons? LoLz) Anyways, they crashed, McDonalds bought them out except for the two on Rt 1, the two in Leesburg and the Kingstowne one (which I think was the last one to open before the sh*t went down). I dunno why those 5 stayed open or not, but they are not at least flourishing again - hopeful to get more soon :)

The Hardees that you see outside this area is tied into Carl's Jr somehow........but I dont know what the deal is. Out west, they have both Carls Jr and Hardees that have the same star, but TOTALLY diff menu.

oh yeah, theres a Waffle House off the Dumfries exit on 95

I heard somewhere that the remaining Roys are the result of a single franchisee that was able to keep the stores open and hold onto the trademarks.

I actually like the Arthur Treacher's up in FFX Circle. It's a little dodgy, but the food is pretty good and brings 80s memories. Waffle House is not bad; when I drive down south I get their chili and hash browns. Finally, I grew up with White Castles in the midwest and NY and really, really wish they had one around here.

There are at three in Fairfax County. All close enough to each other that you can eat at all three in less than an hour.

The last thing NOVA needs is another Chipotle, Subway, Wendy's, McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Starbucks or Chick-Fil-A.
Given the typical volume of traffic in this area, we cannot afford to add Sonic to the mix.
Just imagine the mayhem Sonic would create in a place like NOVA, with its numerous side-by-side drive thru lanes & our self-righteous impatient drivers.

Ok, so it wouldn't work anywhere with TOO much traffic congestion or anywhere near the city.

But I think you could make Sonic work on the edges of the county, probably in Western FFX. Chantilly maybe?

There are no Sonic locations in Loudoun County either and they have a lot more open space to work with.

I think it has less to do with traffic congestion and more to do with Sonic (and most of the other chains listed above) being too chicken-shit to set up shop in Nova. Too much competition I suppose.

We had Sonics when I lived in the midwest..they lasted 6 months after building 4 brand new 2+ millon $ Drive-Ins (that could be used for nothing else)...let me tell you it's all marketing...the food is really average -. If you have to hang your hat on F-in Tater Tots and Cherry Limeades, go for it.

Most fast food is average, kinda comes with the territory.

Is there any other place around here where you can get tater tots and cherry limeade? They would already have a niche.

The grocery stores also have plenty of pasta and tomato sauce but people still go out to Italian restaurants.

True, but.....while takes a little bit of skill to make a restaurant quality Italian meal, any idiot can bake tater tots and mix some juice over ice flakes.

You got it backward. Hardees bought the Marriott owned Roy Rogers and converted them to Hardees. It was a huge flop and after a few years they tried to convert them back to Roys but it was too late because the brand name had been ruined. McDonalds bought up most of the real estate and converted them into McDonalds.

I remember when there was a Jack in the Box in Vienna; those have all closed locally, too.

I love Roy Rogers and will go to the one in Leesburg when I am there, which is not very often, if I am in the mood for fast food. Part of it is for nostalgia as I remember going there a few times when I was a child. Things were different back then; we did not go out to eat very much so going to Roy Rogers with my dad really stands out in my memory. It was the Roy Rogers in Vienna and yes, it converted to a Hardees and now it is a Wendy's.

I have never been to Sonic; not sure what they serve.

I remember the chesapeake bay seafood house in Tysons! I went there as a teenager with my brother and sister and their friends. At the time, I did not like fish so I ate hushpuppies and the other side dishes. That place had a funky ambiance in a good way.

I also remember Farrels ice cream shop in the Tysons mall. They had a really cool old fashioned candy store at the front of the shop.

I did not eat a lot of fast food growing up but when I did, I enjoyed it and it tasted good. Nowadays, the fast food that I have eaten does not taste good. I am not sure why this is. In fact, a lot of fruit does not taste as good as it did when I was growing up.
