i was driving down 236 last night (the stretch in annandale near NVCC) around 3 a.m. and came up on about 20 police cars and mulitiple fire engines, there was a huge plume of smoke coming from the old wooden building behind pizza hut/exxon/7-11 right near woodlawn rd. i think it's called squire rockwells. does anyone know what happened?

I hope this doesn't give the Alto Plaza owners any "ideas"!

Has anyone every had dinner at Squire Rockwell's? We were taken there about a year ago by some friends for a special night out as a thank you for helping them with some small home improvement projects. I was immediately reminded of the restaurants that my grandparents would take me back in the mid-70s and the place looks the same. We are in our mid-40s and I think that most of the people there could have been my parents.

I hate to say it, but a fire could be a real improvement.

I am sure the people that own the place and the folks that work there appreciate your sentiments.

OK...how's this...the fire may provide the owners with an opportunity to upgrade the dining room and bar area with a more contemporary feel which might go a long way towards encouraging people with disposable income to eat there on a regular basis, replacing the much of the current clientele which looks to be a few breaths away from a dirt nap.

Better :) Not much, but an improvement :)

I remember when it was just a dirt lot. I used to ride my bike up to the 7-11 there when I was a kid. It has had a few different incarnations over time... The thing to remember is, there were people that did go there on a regular basis because _they_ liked the place. Just because it didn't have a posh new interior or look like TGI Fridays, UNOs, etc didn't make it a bad place to eat. Your parents (and everyone else's) need somewhere to eat too :)

Yes, hopefully in today's environment they have the insurance/money to fix and rebuild the place.

The owner probably torched the place to cash in since the place was outdated, dead, closed early every night, had horrible food, and was a money pit. Hopefully that will come out in the investigation.

Make room for the CVS that is going to be moving into the vacant lot where the gas station and Squire Rockwell was.
