Howdy everyone. I used to go to Rachel Carson, and while I was there I always wondered what the big silo and two cabins just off school property were. I had a friend who wrote an article in the school paper about it, but all he came up with where theories. If anyone could help me out on finding out what those structures use to be for, and whether they are safe to explore, it would be greatly appreciated.

Good to know I didn't write that article for nothing! Glad to see it made an impression. Also, I couldnt find any property records from the fairfax county website, or the library site, or anywhere. If anyone else has info, I want to know as well.

Inside the silo was an anti-ballistic missile tracking radar, and the cabins were Command and Control. This complex was part of the unbeknownst mobile ABM launcher system located within the Dulles Airport grounds. The mobile launchers themselves were parked in the woods of the airport property.
The airport facilities and vehicles were painted "Dulles Grey" because it simultaneously served as a military facility - kind of like our interstate highway system.
The mobile launchers were removed at some point in the early 1980's.

Horsepen Farm or remnants thereof, were still active into at least the early 1990's with crop cultivation (corn?) along with small Holstein or Angus cattle operation. Believe that main residence and out-building structures were used for controlled burn training by FFX FD. As of last visit in 2011, property can be traversed without accosting and is easily accessed from NEC bldg. side of Park Center Rd. through breaches in the property line fence. Pond on NW side of property and adjacent to 28 was ripe with fish-ripples and scores of basking turtles the shore edge.

Am I the only one here that goes to RCMS? I am a Sevie but that is besides the point, I have never seen these two towers and and silo or whatever they are but I am intrigued. I don't believe the bs about missles and shit but I think that RCMS was built on a farm-ground and they just didnt destroy the silos. Don't know how it got to some random ass house in Horsepen Creek but hey then again it's a public forum what can you expect.
