Best CheeseSteak in Fairfax Co
Date: February 24, 2013 09:50AM

Simple question: What is the best Cheese Steak (Steak and Cheese if you wish) in Fairfax County?

Alexandria has Al's Steak House, Arlington has BadaBing's Food Truck and I've always liked the Broiler on Columbia Pike, but I've never tasted anything memorable in FFC.

Not in FFX, but well worth a short drive:

Tony's Pizza
13629 Dumfries Rd
Manassas, VA
703-791-5023

I rate them one of the absolute BEST in the area.

Buon Appetito in Chantilly. I am from Philly and this is as close to Philly I have found in this area. It is owned and run by Italians and they know how to make it the Philly way. That is no damn salad on my cheesesteak. Just meat, onions and cheese. That is how a real cheesesteak is made. The bread is good but not exactly like the rolls in Philly.

It's called steak and cheese around here. If you want a cheesesteak, go to Philly.

That being said, there's a small but popular deli off of Fullerton road in Newington, called Jenny's Deli, that serves a delicious steak and cheese. Their pastrami is pretty tasty too.

At Buon Appetito in Chantilly that I mentioned above it is called "cheesesteak" as it should be. If you want something close to the real Philly experience this is it in both name and taste.

Rose Hill is in Alexandria on Franconia between Van Dorn and Telegraph. It's been many years since I've tried Mama Mia's, but I will have to go back to refresh my memory.

Whenever you eat your next Steak and Cheese, please take a picture and post it to the forum if you can. It would be interesting to see the differences between the different places.

Thanks!

Their online menu calls it a "steak and cheese", not a "cheesesteak", but thanks for playing, anyway!

I grew up in Rose Hill and the best part of Mama-Mias is that it has never been anything else.

It is the original and I bet they still have the same tables, juke-box and big-ass steel grill from when I was there over 30 years ago.

Mama Mia's in Rose Hill use to be Rose Hill pizza way back in the day...in the 70's. The owner had 3 store: Rose Hill Pizza, Springfield Pizza (across from the Holiday Inn), and then Vienna Pizza right there in Main Street.

...are no Jack Kennedy. Or rather, Buon Appetito is no Philly cheesesteak. First, the staff are all hispanic -- not that there's anything wrong with that, but they've never *heard* of a cheesesteak: they think you want "cheesecake". The menu doesn't list it either, just "steak & cheese". Once you get that squared, they think it should come with lettuce & tomato. Not a bad steak & cheese, but definitely not what you had.

So maybe they've changed (OK, for completeness, maybe you hallucinated the whole thing, or the nature of the universe has altered so "cheesesteak" doesn't mean what it used to, but Occam's Razor suggests the first as most likely).

Mama Mia's in Rose Hill is my personal favorite. HOWEVER, if "Sam" (the owner and normally the only employee, sort of looks like Surge from System of a Down in about 20 years) isn't the one working, I walk right out. No one else who works there can make a cheesesteak quote like he can.

And for the record, Rose Hill Shopping Center is located on Franconia Road/Rose Hill Drive intersection. For those of you who don't know, it's about half way between where Franconia hits S. Van Dorn and where Franconia ends at Telegraph. It might not be the best cheesesteak in the area, but it's damn good. I have friends from New York who insist on going there every time they come to visit. And seeing as how all New Yorkers are food snobs, that's saying something.

Anyone can heat up some steakum's throw provolone cheese on it and get a decent bun. That's what the guy at Mama Mia's does, totally not worth it.

Dirty grill = tasty food

Dirty floor = stickiness factor

Have you ever been to a Brooklyn pizzeria? If the floor is filthy, the pizza is awesome. Maybe the same principal applies.

I used to eat there back in the 80's??. It was run by a family from Palestine (green cards I think). Sitting there having a Philly for lunch when someone walked up to the counter "Order for Smith.." and the owner proceeded to set 2 large grocery bags on the counter. When they left I asked "How many [Philly] do you sell a day? He thought a second and said, "Hmmm, not sure. We order 2000 buns a week...". I thought to myself "HS! I'm in the wrong business." I was only there for 90 days then gone for 18 months. Next time I walked it I got half way to my stool, he looked at me and "You grew a beard." (HS! again...). I do remember they threw the onion on the grill then the Steak'ems on top and started chopping and cooking. Every place else grills separately - that just doesn't work. Oh, and the buns were really soft - think Charmin. Aww, the fond memories...

Try Murray's frozen minuet stakes. I own a restaurant in Fairfax and I serve this shit disguised as a Philly Steak and Cheese. The folks eat this up, I spend $.35 on a roll $.45 for some lettuce and tomato $.20 for a piece of processed cheese food and $1.15 for this "steak" and sell it as a 12" Philly Steak and Cheese for $9.95. No one has ever complained. Most of my customers are fat and lazy grease junkies and wouldn't appreciate a quality sandwich. They wolf this crap down so fast I don't think they really taste it. I could upgrade to better quality food but there seems to be an endless supply of obese car eaters who don't demand decent food. I'm open until 2:00 AM and I serve mostly stoned or intoxicated credit card paying customers from 10:30 pm till closing.

Believe it or not "Hong Kong Kitchen" a old Chinese greasy spoon carry out on Rt 1 in the little shopping center with a 7-11 next to Mt Vernon Square Apts. Two sizes small and regular = big . Both are cheap small less then 5 dollars, sliced rib eye steak piled on . I get mine stright up steak, onions and cheese thats it real Philly Style. I tried Als in Alex., Als is super expensive and needs a soup bowl to eat it from, sloppy drippy and takes a half hour to get.
Ive also tried numerous others over 40 years and I am always surprised for the last 15 years by the Great S&C from the H.K.Kitchen.

One more place , A Sub shop in McLean on Elm St, Impossible place to park
Very busy and great subs.

Anthony's in Falls Church on Rt 7 was a good SC sub when they used good Italian bread a bit crunchy and wide, but alas a bit cheap wit de meat and wrapped the sub in paper but they are now using a soft "Hot Dog Roll" bread and put it in a styrofoam box so their stars dim.

If I want a hot dog roll I'll get a hot dog. F the plastic box, wrap em up , get it! And put some meat in there real sliced rib eye not no stinking steakums
and charge us for it ..we'll pay for a great Cheesesteak sub!

Went to Als in Alexandria today, Has been about 10 years,Nice guy runs it at the register, hes been there as owner since 1965! when he bought it from you know who. AL. A great steak and cheese sub 8 dollars for medium and large is 12 dollars, This is a med and filled me up. Not as greasy as before and a different roll, Als and Antonys in Falls Church both had wide flatter rolls kind of crispy, the baker must have gone out of business. This today was great and a crisp roll would have made it hard to eat as it is filled. I ordered it stright up steak onions wit cheese. It was about 10 inches long and had many more onions and less meat then Hong Kong Kitchens 7 dollar 12 inch cheesesteak, also some of the meat had a very greasy taste but it was great! Ill give Al's a split decision for the BEST CHEESESTEAK IN NOVA,

HONG KONG KITCHEN and ALS STEAKS ***

Cheesesteak Greasy Stars

Hong Kong Kitchen 3 ***
Als 3 ***
Antonys 2 **
Place on Elm St in Mclean 2 **
Marios Arlington 2 **
Most others 1 *

Another one with 3 greasy Stars. The Italian Deli on Elm St in Mclean. I had one there some time ago it has been hard to find a parking place, today I went about 2pm no problem and it was a Great Cheese Steak I'll say it.."The Best Cheesesteak In Fairfax County". So from #2 to #1 with me. a bit less then 9 dollars. They also have many excellent cold cut subs and other subs and they make 3 ft and 6 ft subs for partys about 50 and 110 dollars each. This is the place I refered to as The Place on Elm St. Hong Kong Kitchens is a good one too and a bargain.

The Mc Donalds across the street was closed. Their signs down, I dont know if there a remodel or they went somewhere else, It was a busy one but the parking.. Elm St is now a 1 way Street. 3 Pigs BBQ is now long gone too. It had been on a downhill road a long time.

Had a good Steak and Cheese (Cheesesteaks don't have salad on them) with LTM and grilled onions at Mama Mia's in Rose Hill Center on Franconia Road.

I had a lousy sphgetti dinner there but it was a good 20 years back, anyway there steak and cheese is good and at 7.50 for a 8 inch sub a good deal, Not too greasy, plenty of meat yes the Steakum type but it was good as others have said.

And another.. Franconia Pizza's Steak and Cheese LTM grilled onions. more expensive then Mama Mia's a bit over 8.00 with the tax. Not steakum, rib eye but not as much meat as Mamas and Italian Deli. It was good. And its the Wednesday special.

Now as far as a hamburger sub they have a great one, two fresh burgers on there toasted roll. Thats really good at Franconia Pizza, and the spahgetti and meat sauce dinner about 9 dollars had a nice salad and was very good when the former owners who were Koreans had the place but I have not rried it lately.

It has turned over three times in the last 10 years. A younger guy on the ball nice guy had it, then the Koreans who did a good job and now the newest owner who is one the ball too.

Elies (sp?) Deli in University Mall was okay the one time I had it there. A cheesesteak not from South St in Filthy just doesnt cut it for me though... no whiz, no cheesesteak. No smog, no cheesesteak. No ex-cons behind the counter, no cheesesteak.

The beef/steak that Al's uses is totally devoid of flavor. Looks good, but tastes "meh" or worse. Avoid at all costs.

American cheese is called "cheese food" because it's mostly cheese.

Depends on what you call cheese

Pizza Huts cheese supplier Leprino Foods uses a silicone-based industrial chemical in the patented manufacturing of Pizza Cheese, which hasn't been approved for usage in food

Prissy organic technologies cannot produce enough food to feed the number of people in the world. Humans have been modifying crops for millennia. Today, we have tools that do it faster and more precisely. So what?

LOL! Hair-on-fire food-nazi alarmism from 2006.

Leprino is meanwhile the world's largest producer of "mozzarella" and is the supplier to Papa John's and Domino's as well as Pizza Hut. Also to most major frozen foods producers. It is estimated that 75% of Americans eat Leprino cheese every year, Mmm-mmm, good!

the "so what", shill, is that gmo includes the splicing in of other species genes including fish, insect, and other mammals

there is nothing precise about it and they aren't paying me to be their fucking guinea pig

5% of euro crops are gmo, 70% of american crops are and without any labeling
even commie china has gmo labeling

it allows the crops to endure under the hosing of more monsatano roundup pesticide poison

and guess what is really considered the "pests" in this equation?

yeh, noticed you put "mozarella" in quotes
more like "mob-zarella" since la cosa nostra bought out much of the wisconsin cheese industry

so a food-nazi is a consumer who wonders where don "chee fingers" leprino gets off putting a product hitherto only used in boiler water to prevent bubbles forming in their jabba the hutt american consuming product pizza hutt cheese

Go to the next county over. Arlington Va. Mario's Pizza has the best steak and cheese around. Been open since 1954. Real, 1/8th of an inch thick rib eye steak. Not that paper thin Steak-um garbage. And good sub rolls from Ottenburg bakers. Ate there almost every day for several years. Moved away for a while. Came back several years later and Lefty still remembered my usual order. After having their rib eye, from then on you will be disappointed with the Steak-um most others use.

You were the only one who put "mozarella" in quotes. Others have known to spell it with two z's. In any case and as is widely known, here is no such thing as shredded mozzarella. Can't be done. You have to process it and introduce additives. Otherwise it all becomes just a goopy lump.

No, that would be an "asshole" there. Much worse than a "food-nazi".

Lefty makes a great Steak and Cheese at Mario's. They use a shredded cabbage instead of lettuce and Yes that Ottenburg roll is the best round here.

Shame on Costco for not carrying them anymore. the longer Ottenberg sub rolls, all they got are some short ones.

Al's, Marios, Itialian Deli all are great steak subs here.

Use rare roast beef from the deli counter. Put a greased metal pie tin in a 300-degree oven. The sky's the limit from there. Sweet onions and peppers in first. Maybe a couple of teaspoons of salsa. Salt, pepper, and spices to taste of course (garlic powder, paprika, italian seasonings, etc.). When that begins to soften, 3-4 slices of the roast beef cut cross-wise several times. Just before the steak is ready, add 2-3 slices of swiss or other cheese. Mayo and white vinegar on a grill hoagie roll, then add the pie tin stuff. CheezWhiz if you like. Yum.

Madison Deli McLean, but not open for dinner.

Not the best, but very good and the best I have found in the area.

The best used to be from Hectors in Falls Church circa 1977-1980.

It is if you think that the shredded creamy-colored stuff they put on top of a pie is just plain mozzarella. It's had chemicals added to it and it's been dusted in special powder that helps keep the shreds separate. Leprino is the leader in doing this which is why so many outlets use Leprino processed pizza cheese.

Tried the Italian Deli in McLean on Elm St. today based off this thread & the fact that we were in the area. First of all, nothing Italian about the place. It was terrible, maybe under new Ownership since previous posts? The cheesesteak meat was cheap & many pieces were burnt to a crisp & tasted like a dirty grill. The sub roll was doughy too. Not going back.
