My brother who everyone called Dio played drums. DJ sang, Chris and Ananda played guitar, and I can't remember the bassists name. At least two or three others were in the band at some time. I know later they had a girl singing.

I know they did wiping (recording new shows on old tapes) quite a bit until ~1980 or so. Tape was expensive back then.

Most soap operas from before the 1970s are gone forever. Even the first two Super Bowls are lost except for the scoring plays.

But why the dump into the East River?

I remember when the cops didn't haul everyone off to jail for stupid shit.

Yeah, they'd break up parties, and they'd tell you to leave a park if you were hanging around smoking a joint with friends. And even when they caught you with some weed, they'd make you pour it into the grass and step on it, then let you go.

Who remembers drinking in parking garages around Tysons? Especially when they built the Tycon Tower, and you could go up on the top level of the parking garage and sit on the ledge overlooking the beltway, and pound back some beers?

Or cliff diving at the quarry in Occoquan?

Or climbing up on top of the big bubbles they put over the tennis courts at Fairfax Country club during the winter, to smoke a bowl with a few friends.

Tops Drive-In in Fairfax. Old Keene Mill Rd. when it was still a two lane road, long before the 80's. Fairfax High School, the original. Drag racing on 123, again when it was still a two lane rd. If you were under 18 and caught drunk driving, the cops would drive you home and let your parents deal with you! Which was much worse than anything the cops could dish out. Discipline, that still existed in the 80's.

Giant Music, used to sell those old "cut out" (discontinued) albums. They had that glassed in area where you could play the instruments they sold. When "Waynes World" did the "No Stairway to Heaven" gag, I knew right what they meant!

Sitting behind Best & Co. on Gallows Rd., watching the Lee Highway Drive In Movie shows (without sound), while pounding some beers (Busch or "The Bull", for us FCHS types). We had memorized the lines to Blazing Saddles, so we did not need the sound. Then they would show some of those horny cheerleader movies...

Frozen Dairy Bar was cool.

Driving down to Mario's Pizza House, "in Arlington town" for a very late night steak and cheese sub.

Playing "Midnight Madness" at the Putt-Putt minigolf course down on Rt. 1 (Hybla Valley area), from Midnight to 5 a.m. on Saturday night, for something like $2.00, taking breaks between rounds to go out to the car and drink a beer or two, and then hitting the Jack in the Box in Annandale at about 5:30 a.m., for some "breakfast" tacos. (yes, we were losers, did not have dates on Saturday nights).

What about the Giant Music here in Fairfax at Pickett shopping center? It was an actual music store where I bought my first Stratocaster in 1983. They all knew me there and we would have jam sessions after they closed.

Does anyone remember the tornado that blew through here and left a school bus stuck in the ABC store at Turnpike shopping center? It also demolished the Safeway at Pickett shopping center and a bunch of houses near Woodson High.

Or Lakeside Park before they added the water. My brother used to haul ass around inside it in his Plymouth Duster.

Does anyone remember when Van Dyke Park was "weed central"? You could go there anytime and choose what type of weed you wanted from all the different people selling it.

What about Dixie Hill? Me and my friends use to ride dirt bikes there. It was a great place to take chicks on the back of your bike with lots of secluded place for hobble doogaga or a snarlin.

I remember the first time I went to that spot behind the drive-in, it was dark and we weren't sure where we were, then all of a sudden I see Richard Pryor about 30 ft tall onscreen doing hi s standup act. I think I was 13 it must have been maybe 79 or 80. I saw "Blazing Saddles" inside the lot there with the parentals when it was new, double feature with "The Longest Yard" !

The drive in used to show some really schlocky movies. I saw "Scanners" there, "Bloodsucking Freaks" and "Mothers Day". Great memories!

Anyone remember Seneca Rd, just north of RT 7? You could get air off that one turn back there. We would get our cars up to 80+MPH when we went over and managed to get a couple feet of air. Oh... the stupid things we did back then...

I heard they altered the road to make it less likely to get air. Is that true?

Best make out spots for Springfield:
1.) Back parking lot of Bobs Big Boy
2.) Parking lot of Walden Glen Pool (before the butt heads put a chain up)
3.) The parking lot of that creepy old abandon church behind West Springfield High School (they tore it down and built a townhouse development). I got caught there once doing the nasty with my girlfriend by FCPD. One of the more embarrassing moments of my youth.
4.) Parking lot of Rolling Hills pool. That wasn't as good as Walden Glen, but would do in a pinch.
5.) Parking lot of Royal pool. I couldn't believe that place closed down:(
6.) Sneaking into the Springfield Country Club. Favorite make out place in the summer was by the 7th hole. Scored a couple hole-in-ones the summer before my senior year.
7.) Lake Accotink park at night (Carrleigh Parkway enterance)
8.) Burke Lake park at night.
9.) Jefferson Memorial at night. This used to be the most romantic. Pull in, park and then make out on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial and watch the sun rise over the tidal basin.

Sad thing is I don't think any of these places are available or safe anymore. Hell, I bet if you tried to make out at the Jefferson Memorial at night, the Park Police would probably consider it a violation of the Patriot Act.

I was only a kid, but I remember:

-Freezing Cold Winters, with Tons of Snow.

-Train around Lake Fairfax (No Water Park either).

-Pumpkin Patch (Reston) that was gigantic with Rides, Mazes, etc.

-Expanded Reston Zoo.

-Erol's Video (As others have mentioned). Blockbuster was a mystery then.

-The Ice Cream truck used to actually drive through the neighborhoods more often.

-MJ Concert (I had a shirt from the Tour as well, it had that Stone hand on it. Yeah, I watched MTV a lot too (Yo!MTV Raps lol) ).

-No Spanish (lol, just had to add it).

-D.C. was the Murder Capital (I saw some real craziness in Dodge City).

-Bums used to absolutely infest the D.C. side of the VA bridges going into the City.

-Police carried Revolvers (With individual bullet holders on their belts), and drove those boxy cars.

-"Jones Communications" was the Cable Company in Reston (The only other option in FFX was "Cox Communications" ).

-There was no "Greenway", FFX Co. Parkway, Reston Town Center (Lake Anne was the "Downtown"), etc.

-Bradley's was on the corner of Reston Parkway and Baron Cameron before Hechinger's.

-Reston Parkway was two lanes for its entire length (North of Baron Cameron you drove through a tunnel of trees for a short distance).

-Also, Reston Parkway stopped at Wiehle Avenue (It didn't go all the way to Route 7).

-Reston's developments only extended as far North as halfway between Center Harbor, and Wiehle Avenue.

-Wiehle Ave. ended at a reflective barrier against a hill (With woods).

-The original Reston Parkway is now Reston Avenue (A side road with Fire Station 39 on it now).

-Fair Oaks was THE Mall unless you lived around or East of Tysons.

LOL, So YEAH, I know I wasn't a Teenager in the 80's, but quite a few of my friends and family were, and I just couldn't resist adding some local memories of the time.

skating at best. (best the store) skating behind hooters in fairfax, cheasepeake bay was the shit. i remember the one across from paul iv then the last one in herndon. ministry, D.R.I., breaking into soda machines every summer at mosby woods, eating 711 nachos in the woods while smoking swisher sweets. those were the only "cigs " they use to not carry them behind the counter. they were actually in the isle's like candy. oh oh oh jolt, and dominion beer non alcoholic, hahaha they use to sell those to kids too. then our parents got mad at the 711 guy and he never sold to us again.

How about Brothers (I, II, or III--something like that), the one in Fairfax never carded for beer purchases (by the pitcher) if you were willing to order their mediocre-to-crappy food (which tasted really good with beer when you were 16 or 17). This was the mid to late 70's, not sure if they stayed around in the 80's after the drinking age went up to 21.

I once had someone knock over about half a pitcher on me--one of my tenser moments returning home from being out during HS!

When I was at HHS I kept waiting for them to cut Wiehle through, to make a shortcut to school. They'd talked about that for long enough. Didn't actually cut through until several years later.

This is graymoose's wife, I knew Andy from the time he and my son met in 2nd grade at Hunters Woods Elementary. They were great friends and shared a townhouse in Reston at one time. In July 1990, Andy Wells was riding in the backseat of a car driven by his friend, Jason. My son and his girlfriend were in a car behind them. No one knew Jason was drunk at the time. When Jason's car came to a stop, everyone got out of the car but Andy, his neck was broken and he died instantly. Andy was an only child and his Mom was and still is devastated by his loss.

So many lives are lost by drunk drivers, please don't let this happen to you or your family and friends.

This is graymoose's wife again, Jason hit a tree while driving drunk. As i said before, my son and Andy were friends since 2nd grade. To this day when my son visits Va, he goes to Andys grave. When we see Andys Mom, She still gets upset about her loss.
If you feel this is a anti-drunk-driving- message, then I guess it could be. Why don't you ask Andys mom How she feels about drunk drivers

I remember purple carpet in the circle "seating" areas of Springfield mall.

Hayfield pits and the other 4 wheeling spots.

The absolute BEST times we had, were in a field we aboslutely owned for almost 1/2 a decade!!! Behind Evans Farm on Rt 123, was an old farm house with a barn - we used to have bonfires and 4-wheel in the fields.

During the winter, we began to have fires in the barn... This was around 1989. By 1993, it was all over, as Crosspointe had expanded and new houses were going up...

A couple things I remember well"
A certain redhead from Fairfax City :)
Burning the outhouse - worst smelling wood, EVER :(
Hitch hiking home when my friend ran his jeep into a pond.
Campfires with a couple of cheerleaders I knew
Four wheel drifting in the snow, in the fields

Good times! Thanks for letting me run through the memories!!!

This about sums up my high school experience in the 1980's:

"Springfield Mall...the only mall you'll ever need!" Remember THAT jingle?

Smoking lounges in high school...yes, we WERE allowed to smoke at school!

Clove cigarettes.

Turquoise jeans. Concert tee-shirts. Tube socks. Davy Crockett suede boots for guys and girls. Feathery roach clips. Wallet chains. levi's cords. Black eyeliner. Bandannas.

Howard Johnson's restaurant, Rhiannon's, Mugs (by GMU), Winston's (come on, you know you went there at least once, Maybe even on a school night).

Fake id's.

Hangar Club.

Dart Drug. People's Drug. Drug fair. (We were really into drugs).

Woolco.

Good times!

Farrells and the "ZOO" for your birthday - I think every time I stood in line I paid a dime to see what kind of lover I was...or something similar where you squeeze the trigger and the bulbs lit up until you got your score...

The Crypts on Rte 1

Dr. Bilodeou who looked like Steve Martin!

Every dude in West Springfield worked at Shell at some point.

All the new Burkesters (the new place on the other side of the train tracks - in a literal way) went to West Springfield Elementary at first.

Sledding at Washington Irving or the Golf Course

Ginos - then Roy Rogers and now a bagel place I think

Wild West (wasn't that what it was called before Zaxx?)

Key Theatre with Rocky Horror - The Library, Crazy horse, Dejavu, Commander Salamander

And we still have Maliks for late night Gyro delivery!

Sweet. I missed the days when there was a great local music scene. I saw Fugazi a zillion times because they seemed to always be playing. Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Dag Nasty and later Shudder to Think, Jawbox, etc.
