Best Gyro in NoVA?
Posted by: Bob der Baumeister ()

What say you?

Reston Kebab is pretty good- the cashiers are usually a bit surly and could pass for the Gyro Nazi. They also tend to slice the meat a bit too thick.

Doener Kebab in Leesburg is OK, but there's about 2 ounces of actual meat on a $10 sammich.

OPA! in Ashburn is the best I've tried.

Other suggestions?

I dunno brah, that stuff tends to be the most grisly, salty pieces of cooked up tires you can find. You should stick with the beef or lamb kabobs because at least you know what you're getting IMO.

i thought havabite was no longer there? im probably wrong

plaka is my favorite too. slight downside with limited seating inside and busy parking lot, but totally worth it. And great fries too

went to the place across the street once (skorpios?) and walked in, walked out, and back to plaka...

Here we go again huh? Nobody mentioned this Panam place before in the other gyro threads? Whatsupwiththat? Will try it out sometime soon.

Plaka was pretty good but I guess with success comes complacency, that place is filthy now and the help needs help!

Scorpios/Maggios is still pretty good though!

Usually I have gone to Anthony's in Falls Church, or Atlantis in Alexandria for a Gyro. However, based on comments here I recently tried both Pan Am Restaurant and Plaka Grill. Plaka Grill is probably the best overall, but the others are all good too. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Victors pizza in Springfield used to have a good one but haven't had one in yearsfrom there so don't know if it is still good. Pan am is good but I didn't like the yogurt sauce, too thick like mayonnaise. Skorpios in Vienna is nice also, owner a little strange but good fat gyro. Reston kabob is pretty sweet also. A lot of meat but packed at lunch time, but worth the wait. They have two different types of sauces. had one at amphora and Greek grill in Vienna. Just ok. If I only could pick one, victors pizza if they still do it right. Now I am hungry.

Did they change ownership? I grew up eating Primos pizza every Saturday night and in high school we used to get gyros back at their old location that was so tiny you knocked knees with whoever was sitting across from you.

They just recently started opening on Sundays so I assumed they have new owners. I only make it over there on rare occasions while visiting the folks.

I second Delia's in Springfield. The meat is delicious, but dare I say they provide too much meat in their Gyros. It's probably enough for 3 or 4 servings. Go expecting to take home a doggy bag.

Gyros are nasty. No telling how long that hunk of compressed mystery meat has been sitting around. Most of them probably have a fresh coating of roach feces at the beginning of each day. And to the original poster, Reston Kabob sucks major ass. They can't even cook decent rice. I'm pretty sure it's just Spanish style Minute Rice.

Pan Am is serviceable and they will feed you until you can't fit through the door way. There used to be an Aegean Taverna somewhere but I'm not sure it's still around. Haven't tried Plaka Grill yet.

Victors pizza on rolling rd next to whole foods is really good. The gyro meat is fresh on the twirling spit unlike a lot of frozen gyro meat from other "greek restaurants". Highly reccomend. Good amounts of meat, fresh pita bread, tzaziki sauce is excellent and the veggies and feta cheese are right on point. French fries are above average also. Prices are very reasonable.

Tried the gyro last week at Pan Am family restaurant. It was over $13 but fed me for 2 meals. Fries inside pita were a bit greasy. I think the Greek Grill in Vienna might be better. Also a place in Burke is best price. In a shopping mall I foget the name maybe Angie's.

Tried it today. Definitely a lot of food for the money, but the bread is tough and fairly tasteless. The tzatziki is *sweet* -- that's just wrong. The rice is good, if you like rice (I do); the chicken kabobs were OK, if a bit dry.

So...de gustibus non disputandum, but I wouldn't call it great. Doesn't hold a candle to Plaka in my book.

Have you tried the rice there? Why don't you go give it a try and let me know what you think, maestro. There is no freaking way that anyone who likes rice could call that shit "good". They use minute rice with goddam Spanish seasoning!

Reading is fundamental.

And no, that's not Minute Rice. It's way longer-grain.

WTF?

Let's see...I said I tried it; you asked if I had tried it.

I said I liked the rice, but tastes vary; you asserted that you didn't like it and that if I did, there must be something wrong with me.

How do your posts reflect critical thinking or comprehension?

Of course, this is FFU, so trolls and morons abound. Perhaps you're just keeping the quota up.
