A McLean High School baseball coach has resigned after being charged with a drug offense.

John K. Thomas, a baseball coach at McLean High, was charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a license on Feb. 5, said Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell. Fairfax County Schools spokesman John Torre said Tuesday that Thomas had resigned as a coach at McLean High School.

Thomas is also a special education teacher at the high school. Torre said he will continue his teaching assignment at the school as a special education instructor.

Thomas, 35, of Fairfax was stopped by Fairfax County police for displaying an improper vehicle registration at about 2:45 p.m. Feb. 5 on the exit onto I-66 from eastbound Route 7, Caldwell said.

If it was anybody else who found themselves in this position, I'm sure I'd feel sorry for him or her. Not John Thomas. He has skirted too many moral issues and worked to the detriment of too many athletes in pursuit of winning games and chasing titles for it not to catch up with him someday.

The 2012 season will be John Thomas’ 7th as head coach of the McLean High School baseball program where his teams have compiled an overall record of 93-44. Prior to becoming head coach, Coach Thomas served as the Highlanders’ pitching coach for one year during the 2005 season. Throughout Coach Thomas’ tenure as head coach at McLean, the Highlanders have qualified for the Northern Region tournament every year and have seen ten players go on to play college baseball. Coach Thomas was named Liberty District Coach of the Year in 2009 after the Highlanders captured the Liberty District regular season and tournament championships and established a school record for wins (18), and again in 2010 after McLean took the regular season Liberty District title for the second consecutive year while winning 19 games. Coach Thomas has coached four 1st team All-Met baseball players during his tenure at MHS, and five of his players have earned baseball scholarships to Division one schools.

A 1996 McLean High School graduate, Coach Thomas served as team captain twice for the Highlanders during his playing days. He went on to play baseball at the University of Virginia and spent four years as a relief pitcher in the Cavaliers’ program before graduating with a degree in Psychology in 2000.

Coach Thomas is also a Special Education teacher in the Social Studies department at McLean High School, and serves as an Associate Scout for the Houston Astros.

1) pulled over for bad tags
2) sir please present license and registration
3) no license huh, sir step out of the vehicle while we search our database for your true identity and details regardig the car

Looks can be deceiving. He was pulled over because he is too stupid or lazy to update his registration on his vehicle, which when caught is a simple fine. So like every other pull over of this type, the officer asks for license (which you are not allowed to drive without and he did), registration, and proof of insurance. When he couldn't provide identification, that right there is probable cause for a stolen vehicle and it is law that they detain the subject until proof of ID can be determined since none was provided by the subject. Since he did not have this, they searched his car for some form of ID and found his bag of goodies instead. Or if he was smoking it, then they have probable cause to search because his vehicle reeked of it. Like previous poster said, go back to law school you JT cock smoker.

Sorry this year's tryouts haven't even started and this is last years squad, who like every other McLean team, choked at the end.

Sborz was supposed to go to Langley, but transferred in during his sophomore year because JT was his Canes coach (wow surprising that happened).

Laughable.

Pupil placement brought many of these "scholar/athletes" to Madison. According to their pupil placement paperwork, they wanted to pursue Advanced Placement (AP) coursework, whereas Marshall's advanced classes follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. By the FCPS regs, that is a legitmate basis for "pupil placement" from your normal base school to the next nearest school that offers AP vs. IB. The problem is, most of these baseball players who wanted to pursue AP coursework at Madison could barely tie their shoes.

The irony is that Madison is now losing kids (some of them baseball players) to Marshall, because UVA in particular loves students who follow the IB track in high school, and college baseball coaches (like those in basketball) barely pay attention to HS baseball because there are tons of showcase events for "travel/club" teams and individual showcase events for the good players. Check out Andy McGuire (a legitimate Madison player) if you need any evidence of this. You don't need to put up with the BS and drama that Pudge has going on over at Madison to get college coaches to look at you.

For all of Pudge's success at Madison, where he has had any say in things, he steered his players to VMI, a veritable powerhouse in college baseball... NOT!Recent grads have gone to play at much better colleges/baseball programs, not because of Pudge, but in spite of him.

Sborz pupil placed into McLean, I am not sure what the justification was, but his parents and the Langley coach did not see eye to eye. His parents also pulled him out of Great Falls Little League in what would have been his final season, because playing with his buddies was holding him back. I wish him well at UVA, and hope he eventually makes it to the Bigs. The odds are against that, however.

Will Thomas be allowed to return?

Since this is his first offense, my guess is the charge will be reduced to something minor after maybe some community service etc. If the full charge doesn't stick, I wonder if FCPS can legally keep him from being reinstated.

My kids have played travel baseball players from McLean as well as Stars and Canes, all of which Thomas coached for. He was very well liked by kids and parents. Any coach is going to get badmouthed on a site like this. Just too bad he let some really DUMB behavior bring a sh#$storm his way.

It strikes me that for all the mass horror over Thomas' affinity for pot, it is a common thing...more common than parents want to admit. In fact, I've known parents horrified at their kids trying it while the parents were secretly doing it themselves! Doesn't change the fact that it is against the law at this time, however, and that's all that counts. But we are a society of hypocrites sometimes.

When it becomes legal, there won't be a problem, but the fact remains, it is an illegal drug and he broke the law. This is not up for discussion.

If he is busted on possession he is done with schools---and teaching btw. No private school will hire him.

But like most teachers who bitch and moan that they are WAAAYYYY underpaid, he can take his BS degree in PSYC and shop it around to Fortune 500 firms and see if they will pay him $45k for 9 months work---good luck with that JT.

The idiot should have practiced his drug habit at home and not brought it to school. Many kids have been busted for pot in their car on school grounds so it really makes no difference whether the weed was in his desk drawer or in his car. BOTH are on school grounds.

If JT screwed up, he screwed up. If it means he can't teach or coach in the future, he'll have to deal with those consequences. Either way, he's going to land on his feet, while you're still be a fuckboy.

Both schools (mClean and langley) are AP so what the hell did he get approved for? Parents sign a letter of understanding that the kid will take the class/course they are getting an exception for. AND THE SCHOOL MUST FOLLOW UP.

It wasn't for AP. He transferred in to take German which isn't offered at Langley. At Langley, Russian is the class. Hell of a system. And yes this is the same principal who was caught banging her fellow employee, so if she fires him then she looks like a hyporcrite so expect him to stay.
