If losing a job means that you almost instantly get foreclosed or the neighbors or whomever then the person who "bought" the house screwed up because they couldn't afford it in the first place. They should have gotten a cheaper house, rented, or lived in a different area. And one for foreclosure isn't going to cause a neighborhood to turn-in fact foreclosures make the neighborhood better, as usually the new owners are better than the last ones. With people who are bad with money tend to come other problems. If a Safeway closes it is probably because they are over priced and have bad quality produce.

Other places are really bad too Mynmar, most of Africa, India, lots of central america, caribeans, and South America. Even the "poor" people in the US have it really good. I don't think it is unique to condo's. But I don't know where they get that some condo goes into foreclosure and the place goes ghetto from. I live in a condo and condo's there have been plenty of condo's that have gone into foreclosure and it has had zero negative effect. There is actually good to foreclosures because it let's people who are responsible get properties that they can afford by decreasing housing prices.

I hate to say it, but you're correct. This area will be in serious trouble if government spending is cut. Especially defense spending.

75% of the Fairfax county economy is based on defense and government contracts. Republicans are always yelling cut spending UNTIL ITS THEIR PROGRAM THAT GETS CUT.

6 months ago inspectors just shut down three Fairfax county companies because they were making a fortune off bogus government defense contracts.

I'm all for a strong defense to stop terrorists but the waste is enormous. As for people who serve in the military. That's great, but let's be honest. Most of the people that join the military do it because it was a free government handout of a job and they can't get a good job any other place. The majority never graduated high school or attended a college.

It's not a Republican or Democrat issue. There are plenty of Dems crying now too, including our own.

The government has grown and continues to grow regardless who is in power. The only difference is at the margins of what gets spent where and represents a fairly trivial difference.

I'm neither a Republican or Democrat and, while I think that the sequester plan is an extraordinarily dumb way to do it, if that's the only way that we can get any cuts, which appears to be the case, then I'll go with that versus the status quo. We cannot continue to spend money like we have. Every objective, responsible, independent assessment clearly shows that it's unsustainable. Just because it will affect Fairfax/VA/MD/DC, well, that's just kinda too damn bad.

Let's be honest the cuts are on the way. The days of Fairfax county residents living the high life off government contracts and pensions are fading away.

The rest of country is wise to our ways. Let's hope Fairfax county can secure the new FBI building. We got cheated out of the new defense building.

Well your post is exactly the problem with people in this area-we are completely selfish. Yes government cuts will impact me and my family negatively actually pretty directly. But I can't justify being selfish and steeling from the rest of the country because of it. It is all about making the correct financial choices and making sure you save lots and lots of money (and with what government employees and contractors and those in this area are paid it isn't hard to do). Don't buy the house or condo you can barely afford the down payment on, get the one where you can cover a good portion in cash and save up until you can. It is all about choices. That so many people here have six figure family incomes and don't choice to save a dime of it isn't the fault of the rest of the county.

Just got notified today that I am being laid off due to the Sequestration. I am a mid-level manager at a large government contractor. 120 of my co-workers are also being let go. I am a 50yo white male with a MBA and a couple of certifications. What do you think my chances are of finding another job around here? Even when the economy turns around, or if sequestration does not happen? The company I work for says the cuts were necessary and are not due to the pending sequester. Bullshit! Most of the folks who got termination notices today are white males over 40! An African American co-worker who is same age as I am, did not get canned! I got 2 weeks of severance after being with this company for 8 years. Another co-worker who is asian and was only here two years is getting 3 months! WTF?

I am divorced and live in Woodbridge! I will have to notify the rental office on my way home. Selling my 2007 Honda at Carmax tonight. My furniture, TV, Stero will be posted on Craigslist later today. Then I will be living on the streets!
