Virginia congressman cites stinger-wielding terrorists to argue for further gun control

12:38 PM 02/08/2013

Rep. Gerald Connolly, a Democratic congressman from Virginia, has argued to his constituents that Americans shouldn’t be allowed to wield Stinger missiles “capable of downing commercial aircraft” even though such weapons are already illegal.

“I have been accused of trying to dismantle the Second Amendment for simply asking whether high-powered, military-style semi-automatic firearms with large-capacity magazines — which were used in the D.C. sniper murders, the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, and the mass shootings in Aurora and Newtown — should be readily available to the general public,” Connolly wrote in a letter recently disseminated to constituents concerned about gun rights.

“Or for wondering whether the Second Amendment applies to weapons such as the FIM-92 Stinger missile launcher, a personal portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile platform capable of downing commercial aircraft.”

A Stinger missile launcher is already considered a banned “destructive device” under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Using such weapons to shoot down commercial aircraft is a threat almost always associated with terrorists, including a group of four men who in 2009 were foiled by the FBI in their plot to take down a New York airliner using a Stinger missile.

Connolly’s constituent letter was documented by gun maker Sturm, Ruger & Co. on its website, where gun owners have submitted response letters they received from U.S. lawmakers after contacting their offices about the ongoing gun debate.

Name-dropping illegal weapon systems has become a common theme among advocates for gun restrictions in the wake of the December elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

It should be noted that Mr. Connolly voted in favor of Obamacare when the majority of his constituents were opposed to it In an interview he admitted he hadn't read it and that he voted in favor if it because Nancy Pelosi asked him to. Exactly who does Mr. Connolly represent?

Gerry Connolly is a crooked son of a bitch who only cares about one thing, himself. I can't believe he is still in office, he needs OUT.

I am quite unhappy that he is protesting the postal service move to limit Saturday delivery ... Seems a very reasonable way to cut costs. Of course, he has zero interest in spending less on anything ...

If post office goes would be last reasonably inexpensive safe way to send messages to someone else. lot harder to open envelopes without detection

i.e google reads your gmail so you get scroogled, Bush family has their personal email hacked. Bush Sr. former President and head of C.I.A. Wasn't one of Federal Reserve computers hacked this past week.
The internet is a great way to get info and view videos but for conducting business and expressing personal info on a truly safe level it's a way way off imo.
the person who comes up with a new way of transmitting info over the internet instead of 01 should become a billionaire

lets face it Al Gore effed up when he invented the internet and the Jeanie is out of the bottle

btws, Connolly is a quite self serving know it all from personal experience but that was years ago when he was a supervisor. unfortunately, most of congress is pretty much the same these days

Post office should get rid of lots of street boxes instead of cutting Saturday delivery. Why look around Merrifield. Number of street boxes and the main post office in Northern Virginia is an effin half mile away. Come on. I once worked post office for 6 months to make some quick cash. I noticed a lot of damn dummys seemd to work there but still the mail does get delivered efficiently for the most part. Lots of folks in the middle of nowhere still who depend on home delivery.

Reducing delivery to 6 days a week, or even twice a week like garbage pickup is not equivalent to no mail delivery at all. I agree that there are many ways for the postal service to cut costs, but I guarantee that politicians would be up in arms if any of them were put in place.

And the majority of NOVA voted for him by a huge amount. He is looking out for constituents. People didn't like obamacare? Thats odd because a shit load of people like the under 26 year old coverage when polled. They love the no pre-existing conditions when polled. And they love the ability as a small contractor to be able to compete for prices in a similar way as large corporations by being grouped into exchanges which WILL save them money compared to traditional health coverage.

If you don't align with Gerry's platform, then you are likely the one out of touch with what most of Fairfax wants. Yackass

Gerry is a total moron, which is a reflection of the kind of idiots moving into NoVA - refugees from leftwing, no-jobs parts of the country who move here rather than live with the consequences of repeatedly voting for anti-business, anti-freedom politicians. Now they are ruining what used to be a good area by repeating their mistakes.

I could not agree more --- typical bloated-ego politician who will do whatever it takes to keep himself in office.

Look at the hideous eyesore called Tyson's Corner -- now with an even more hideous eyesore towering over it for decades to come. What a disaster for a metro line that cost more than 1/2 as much as the rest of Metro (most of which is underground) combined. No thanks Gerry --- you effed up bad.

Could we have done worse?

What, other than junk, is delivered by mail these days? EVERY business I know uses email to deliver statements, invoices, notices, marketing materials and even junk mail. For one, it's cheap and for another it's instant.

Only the IRS sends its nonsense by USPS.

And let's not forget that the USPS spent hundreds of millions of our dollars supporting the liar in chief -- Lance Armstrong .... LIESTRONG!

Shut the entire thing down and let UPS and FedEx or even the garbage companies take over!

Connolly is only supporting this because many, many of his voters are union USPS workers. When was the last time HE sent some constituent mail by USPS -- he gets to do so for free if I am not mistaken.

Good riddance USPS.

Wrong. Connolly's 11th district was gerrymandered (ironic) to make other districts "safe." Connolly was the lucky inhabitant of the seat at the time. He has no interest in looking out for his constituents. I miss retired Congressman Tom Davis.

Has nothing to do with the fact that in 2005 the GOP congress/president passed a bill that forces the USPS to have on hand at any given time 75 years worth of pension, a requirement that is 5 times the amount of years of pension foreward pay than ANY other department in the US including the military.

Without that provision, the USPS would be running in surplus.

Or it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the GOP receives 3 times the amount of donations than the Democrats do from UPS and Fedex. Right?

Sheep

Also, really Tysons? Connolly fought FOR a below ground option until the damn penny pinching house fraus and "tax payer" types started complaining that the cost was 4% too high and that we should go above ground. Fuck you man, Tysons is an asphalt canyon that is finally getting fixed and reflecting the wealth of this area BECAUSE of the push to bring metro there. Since it was announced Tysons has added 6 major corporations as well as several of expansions planned AND we are now taking corporations away from DC helping to pay for Virginia taxes.

You too are a sheep, baahahahhaaha

Guess who was principal sponsor in the House for the bill requiring those payments why it was Tom Davis
Maybe the bill had some unintended consequences that he didn't think of but
I haven't looked into lobbying records neither it sure makes me wonder though...
grammar, we don't need no grammar Principal Skinner

pTET7 someone obviously has never been hacked.
I think a group like Anon is trying to show folks that the internet is not secure

if a former President and former head of the C.I.A. can get hacked what makes you think all your info is secure?

I agree..Connolly has been a great advocate for his constituents. I always thought the fight for an expensive tunnel was actually a fight to kill the Metro coming out to Tysons at all. It is Fairfax County and racism is still alive. Gerrymandering is done by the party in power at the State House. I could be wrong but I believe Virginia has a equally divided legislature with tie votes being broken by the Luetinent Governor. So I don't understand the previous poster complaining.

Hmmm -- a letter sitting in an unlocked mailbox is secure?

Ppl been steaming envelopes open for generations, no?

The only thing secure is what stays in one's head -- and even that can be waterboarded out when the gubmint wants what's there.

Ignore him. Any fuckwad who thinks the kaptcha code is a good handle is probably an octogenarian getting ready to die, aka a whiny little turncoat, secession proposing teabag loving, fagbust, but secret fagloving douuuuuuuuche. Thank god his time on this earth moving forward is most assuredly going to be less than the rest of us.

You're the sheep. You just completely bought the postal unions bs without ever actually looking at what was really being done didn't you? Of course you did. lol

First, it's not the retirement fund, it's the health benefits fund.

Second, the "pre-payments" aren't really. It's to get them caught up to a reasonable level of funding versus expected future obligations.

Sure, they'd be in great shape without making the payments. And approaching $70 billion in unfunded health benefit plan obligations.

Prior to the 'prepayment' deal they were operating on a pay-as-you-go basis for their health benefit plan. The funding requirement is a 'catch-up' intended to reduce unfunded obligations that they'd already run up (which taxpayers are on the hook for). Even after 4 years of the prepayments, at the end of 2010 they still were underfunded by about $50 billion. After all of the payments which end in 2016, they still will only have paid about $16 billion toward the reduction and will have about $33 billion in unfunded obligations remaining.

For purposes of comparison, the estimated under-funding of ALL of the entire S&P 500 combined is estimated at about $335 billion ($1.68 trillion in obligations and assets of $1.32 trillion).

The 75 years prepayment claim also is false. All that they've done is put the benefit plan on a standard actuarial schedule for such plans that spans a 75 year period in order to include current retirees, working employees who will be retiring, and future hiring expected to maintain the workforce on a rolling basis. That is, the plan needs to be adequately funded to cover all of its retirees and current and anticipated workforce on a revolving basis, i.e., You can't blow the whole wad to cover current retirees and have nothing left for anyone else.

The Post Office's main financial problem is that it has about 575,000 employees that they maintain on a revolving basis with some 300,000 of those expected to retire by 2020 to join however many 100,000s of existing retirees are out there, all with very generous benefit plans which were negotiated back when nobody was keeping tabs on this stuff or worrying about the eventual costs.

After decades of computer geniuses working on internet "security" and billions of dollars spent, 12 year old hackers need but a few hours to defeat the latest measures. The internet is not, and will never be "secure".

Playing around on the internet can be fun to play around with, but if something is important, don't even think about it.

BTW, FedEx and UPS will mourn the passing of the USPS more than anybody. USPS does "last mile" deliveries of millions of FedEx/UPS packages. The people that live at those "unprofitable" destinations will be fucked. They will receive no deliveries of any kind.

I agree good riddance USPS. They are money drains. I had a friend who used to work for USPS. Many of the mail carriers were making 70,000-80,000 a year and would get extra money by being slow and dragging things out so they could get overtime. I've observed this myself. Had a horrible mail woman about 5 years ago who at 4-6pm while on duty would sit in the lobby and read the paper for who knows how long before returning to actual work. Meanwhile I would get my neighbors mail and they would get mine. Never seen a UPS or Fed Ex employee do this.

Another fine example of what is wrong in Washington. Only in politics, could such a low life like Gerry find a job.

Hey -- at least you found a clerk -- most of the time there are many windows but no clerks and ramshackle work station with taped together apparatus -- it's an embarrassing shame!

The fucked can move, go on line, pay more or do without. Not my fault they chose to live in Pettyoat junction and not my expense to bear for their decisions.

You're right. Getting out of bed is not secure. Driving is not secure. Eating the frakenfood your gubmint gives you is not secure. Your meds are not secure (have you seen a Celebrex commercial lately?)

Take an antidepressant and you may commit suicide. Yer cell phone is giving you brain cancer. Breathe the air? Get sick from that. Drink the water? Get sick from that.

And let us not forget that Anthrax was sent through the USPS mail system and a major sorting station was closed for months costing many tens (or was it hundreds?) of millions of dollars to clean and decontaminate.

Every letter you send funded Lance Armstrong's LIES. That scumbag LIAR! Let the USPS go sue him and recover.

Advertising during the SUPER BOWL? What bankrupt company does or can afford that?

Running Christmas ads in FEBRUARY? Hello???

Yeah -- the mail is secure. REAL secure!

Take yer FUBAR USPS and shove it where the sun don't shine!
